Panavia Tornado GR4 - Shiny Two..er..31Sqn....
James V replied to James V's topic in Panavia Tornado Group Build
Will Decals went on fine, was a bit fiddly to get them right- the only problem was a bit of bleed through with the black being under them - So if you are planning on doing the scheme try and see if you can get a neutral colour or light colour for them to sit on Thanks again for the decals Canberra is also currently underway now! -

Panavia Tornado GR4 - Shiny Two..er..31Sqn....

Right here we are! Completed at last! It took me a while to complete it but I am really thrilled with the results. Its still not perfect and I have some engine covers to make for the intakes but I thought I would share these pictures with you - I hope that you like it and any comments are always welcome. Just to let you know it was completed with a couple of layers of Klear, followed by dark dirt and black pro model wash and a bit of light weathering. Now for the next question - Which to build next???? any ideas? -
Progressing well; Those seats look ace! Don't know how you could build in 1/144
-
Stunning build that! Just spent a good ten mins reading the whole thread!

Tom/Merv The shade is Magnesium, worked really well, might try a bit of dry brushing to highlight it out more if I can - I use a low pressure on the brush as well; small steady coats -
Give it a good clean out with air brush cleaner - It just sounds like paint in the nozzle from previous use. I had the same problems with mine and have the same issues with my aztec air brush, it just needs to be cleaned every time you use it.

Hi all, Next round of updates, Got the burner cans sorted out - First time I have used Alclad2, it certainly is awesome to use!! I have also started with the decals for the 31sq. Goldstars - many thanks to wolvowill for the decals! I suffered a little bit of bleeding with the black below - Any ideas how I can stop this or get over it? The weapons and tanks are only dry fitted - I saw after taking the shots that I have attached the TIALD Pod and LGBIII the wrong way, which I will correct on the final model. I think its coming on well, Really pleased with the finish so far. I just have the seats to finish, decals to complete, I was thinking about adding intake covers as well Hope you like it so far.. -
I used XF-19 on mine with Klear over the top - Its a good match - I can post some shots of it if you like?
-
Coming on very nicely there! Doing engine blanks for my tonka as well, need to carry on with it soon! Keep the pics coming !

New Question - Paveway III LGB Layout
James V replied to James V's topic in Panavia Tornado Group Build
Spike thanks for this, So am I right in thinking a LGB on the Right (starboard) and that TILAD pod on the left? (if you were looking down on the jet) -
Looking good - Look forward to seeing the wings after the flaps are installed!

Not sure about the 1/32 scale decals, i'm pretty sure if they brought them out in 1/48th they would be available in a larger size. Might be worth checking on the Hannants site. Jussie, Regarding the black, it is actually an Xtracrlyic colour of XA1012 (Night Black) - I am sure you could use the Tamiya Semi Gloss Black to the same effect mind! Thank you for the kind comments, I hope it looks as good when I have finished! -

Thanks for the comments guys, eng that certainly is the scheme I will be doing. I still have an airfix tornado GR4 in the stash and might make that one a Shiny Two I think. Will, I will e-mail you in a moment. Thanks again -
I have been trawling the web for an hour or so, I thought someone on here might know in the end - With the 31 squadron jet I am looking to finish it off with a couple of LGBIII bombs from the airfix kit - The question is though, are these to be staggered on each pylon one in front of the other or are they to be paced parallel at the front of each pylon. I though I would ask rather than putting them on first! Thanks in advance!!!

Panavia Tornado GR4 - Shiny Two..er..31Sqn....

Hi all, Been a while since I have last posted on here - A quick update to the progress so far. I have now decided after finding out that Shiny Two is actually a wrap around Medium Sea Grey and not two tone grey with a black spine and fin (as per Model Alliance - thanks to everyone on here for the advice) so I have opted to change and finish the scheme off in 31sq. "Goldstars" scheme. More to follow soon James -
Looks awesome there! Well Done - Look forward to seeing this one progress

Hi, I have the Aztec Airbrus, Not sure which I have but I have had it years and it is great - Got 7 different heads for it and it works a treat - I can honestly agree with everyone on here, ditch the cans and invest in a compresser, you will not regret that - Saves so much money in the long run, regulates pressure etc.. Regarding paints, when I used to build model trucks I used cellulose, then I changed to enamel and now for aircraft i use tamiya acrylic paints, vallejo and xtracrlix all of which are the best to use. Regarding cleaning, I use a badger air brush cleaner, its very good, but make sure you do not get it anywhere near any plastic!!!! If you want any advice on brushing, drop me a PM
-
WolwoWill, I'll drop you a PM if you dont mind?

Zipper, This is the one as my previous post. I've been tempted to can the idea of doing a Shiny two and change it to a standard coloured squadron bird but I do not think that I have any decals for this! Oh well back to the drawing board! How long were you based at Marham, I still have a few affiliations with the base, I presume you know they got XH131 on a plinth at the back of the base now as well.
-
Guys, Thanks for the comments, I have now ordered some MSG and am a bt annoyed as I got such a good finish with the Dark Sea Grey - Oh well live and learn.. More to follow once I have the paints!!!!
-
Thanks very much - put my mind at ease! Will be adding the top coat tonight hopefully so will post some photos in my thread....

Hi again - I got a delivery from Hannants yesterday for the paints and resing seats for the Tornado GR4 "Shiny Two" that I am building - I do have a question though.. The paints i got are great and go on like a dream but I wanted to check if the following was correct: Underside section and front cockpit wrap around - XA1036 - RAF Dark Camo Grey Rear Fuselage, top wings - XA1004 - RAF Dark Sea Grey Tail fin and Spine - Black The reason I ask is that I have painted the underside and it looks a bit too dark grey (see the attached picture) Is this right? Also, am I right in thinking the nose cone on the plane is the same colour as the rear fuselage?

Panavia Tornado GR4 - Shiny Two..er..31Sqn....
James V replied to James V's topic in Panavia Tornado Group Build
Blimey!!! Firstly thank you to everyone for the welcome to the forum and the comments. This one has been slow as I got annoyed with the cockpit detailing! My next step is to wait for the paint to arrive from Hannants to complete the external colours adn then drop back on to the pit once this is completed. Its no way going to be a work of art but it might be more deatiled than the original kit! I hopefully should get some more pics on here soon, and hopefully a cleaner desk! My next build (sitting next to the desk) is a tamiya 1/32 F-16 CJ - Has anyone had any experience with this kit? It looks a BEAST!!
