A Zmaj built Hurricane in Romanian colors was my initial intention. Failing to crash mold/ vacuum form the early windscreen and unable to locate a suitable aftermarket part made me change to a RAF "late fabric wing". I had a look at the versions proposed by the PCM kit but none of the RAF machines matches my definition (either early canopy or watts 2 blade propeller). Right? Did the late canopy coexisted with the 2 blade Watts (and fabric wings, of course) in RAF colors. If yes, that's a machine I would like to represent. Regards,

Hello fellow forum members, I intend to convert a Fly 1/32 Hawker Hurricane Mk Ia kit into an earlier model with fabric covered wings. The "technical definition" I'm targeting could be summarized as follows: - fabric covered wings (with all associated modifications - different gun covers, ejector ports, relocated landing lights); - fuselage with anti-spin streak under the tail (as provided in the kit); - deHavilland 3 blade propeller (the one from the kit or a resin replacement one - any suggestions?); - 5 spoke wheels; - late type windscreen with the additional framing (I would have liked an early windscreen, but wasn't able to find a suitable one - any suggestions?); - reflex type gun sight (not the early "ring and bead type). As my knowledge on the topic is limited, my first question is if the definition above would mach an existing airframe. If answer is positive, what would be the right color scheme/ registration (I'm targeting a RAF machine). Thank you for your support and suggestions. Regards,

Simply gorgeous; congrats! Still hope ICM will release the Polish ambulance version - CSS-13 - in striking white/ blue colors.

The original my model tries to represent, some time after retirement.

Hello, 1/72 MIG 15 UTI slightly altered to represent a Czech version (Aero CS-102): kit by Eduard with a good deal of aftermarket goodies (Brassin cockpit and speed brakes, photoetched flap and external details), very few scratch details (gear indicators and aerial), Vallejo paints. Decals from various sources, trying to represent a Romanian Air Force plane from early 1990, just months from type retirement. Thanks for your comments.

Hello, Not sure here is the right place for asking this question but I'll have a try... I bought the 1/32 Fly kit - Finnish Mk.I boxing - and noticed the kit only provides 4 spoke wheel hubs (together with tires). Does any of the other box offers the 5 spoke wheels? Any source for 5 spoke replacements (resin)? How about using a 5 spoke Spitfire wheel? As I'm trying to reproduce a Romanian MkI Hurricane, I'm also looking for a Spitfire spinner for the DH propeller; any suggestions/ recommendations? Thank you, Iulian M.

Hawker Hurricane MkI DeHavilland propeller but different

As an image counts a 1000 words; that's an early radiator for me: For sure I'll count on your support the moment my construction starts. Regards, Iulian -
Hawker Hurricane MkI DeHavilland propeller but different
mack replied to mack's topic in Aircraft WWII
Thank you for the summary; just bought an Ark kit today and the propeller fits well the Hasegawa nose, although the molding is rough to say at least... A have a summary with all (I think) particularities for a Romanian Hurricane Mk Ia (the 12 original ones): - Spitfire DH propeller; - metal wings; - early radiator; - wo rectangular access panel on starboard; - ring and bead sight; - windscreen with additional frame and round rear-view mirror; - early radio mast (round); - 5 spoke hubs (bought the Aires replacement wheels for that); - free castoring tail wheel. also a list of modifications on the kit (mainly related to fabric representation on rear fuselage). Thanks for pointing out the wing tip issue and the tropical vents (side of the cockpit hub?). Hope to start the construction soon. Regards, Iulian M. -
Hello, I would like to build a Hawker Hurricane Mk Ia equipped with a DH propeller - not the "standard one", but the "Spitfire one"; apparently that's the configuration of the 12 machines delivered to Romania. The Hurricane propellers story was covered in detail here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234980181-hawker-hurricane-propellers-and-spinners-a-modellers-guide/& and it's not my intention to go over it again. I'm more interested in how to replicate that on a 1/48th scale model starting from the kit that I have - Hasegawa Hurricane Mk.I TRop, ref. 09682. It goes without question that the kit does not contain this configuration. I've bought the Quickboost (QB 48 625) DH Spitfire propeller intended for the Airfix kit, but the spinner is hugely oversize compared to the Hurricane cowling. - is the Quickboost part (QB 48 268) intended for the Tamiya Spitfire I & V kit different from the one above (smaller spinner) and consequently suitable for what I want to do? - is there a difference between the two Quickboost parts (QB 48 400) and (QB 48 425) - both identically labeled as "Hurricane De Havilland Propeller for Hasegawa kit"? - is there any known kitbashing option? Thank you very much for any useful hint or suggestion. Regards, Iulian M.

Hello Bjorn, Thank you very much for the details. You just convinced me to stick to the 35FS; I'll leave the two seater for some other time or for 1/72 if only I'm able to locate an 1/72 kit... As for my future 48th scale 35FS I'll rely on you to review my acquisition list (kit and accessories). Regards, Iulian

1/72 Saab J35J Draken (Revell/ Hasegawa)
mack replied to mack's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
It was mentioned in a post of a fellow forum member on the intended WIP topic (WIP that didn't actually materialized): http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234950751-saab-j-35j-draken-swedish/ "... About the decal sheet and the numbers for the grey jet. The sheet is correct!! At some point there were 2 aircraft with the same number at F10. To avoid mistakes the number was changed to 5,0 on one aircraft; therefore is it 05 on the wings and 5,0 on the fin." -
Hello, After making a fool of myself with the first answer; I’ve decided to have a closer look at the image and… looking at the cradle the plane is about to be placed on and at the rear “spools” my educated guess is that those (the rear spools) could have been nothing more than a cylindrical bar (or most probably a tube) protruding out on each side of the fuselage, enough to sit on the rear arms of the cradle (hope you’ve got the sense of the explanation, obviously I’m not a native speaker). I’m not on expert on (Sea) Hurricane, but assuming the spools on a CAM fighter were not different from the one used for carrier based planes it might be useful to have a look at the cable (catapult cable) used on the carriers; the geometry of the cable ends should provide useful hints with regards to the spool geometry (mating parts). Now if somebody can locate a good representation of the cable... One additional remark related to the drawing (from “The Hawker Hurricane - A Comprehensive Guide / Second Edition / by R. A. Franks / SAM Publications / MDF no 22 / ISBN 978-1-906959-34-0”): in my opinion the drawing is misleading; the representation of the rear spools in the side view is not matching the one in the bottom view (technical drawing point of view). Regards, Iulian

Hello, I have completely failed with the WIP but at least I managed to finish the model; it qualifies as a half fail, don’t you think? For those interested, the RFI is available here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235014474-172-saab-j35j-draken-revell-hasegawa/#comment-2588935 Building the 72nd scale model bought me enough fun to think about a 48th version, and here comes my question; or questions, as I have a couple… I’ve narrowed my options to: 1. Finish single seater (camouflaged); any recommendations regarding the “additions” (resin, photoetched sets, decals, etc) next to Hasegawa kit? Is the new Eduard release a better starting point for a Finish Draken? or 2. An 35C using Maestro models conversion set http://www.maestromodels.com/sk35c-draken-2-seater-conversion.html ; any experience with the set? Any “colored” schemes apart omnipresent NMF? Thank you for your input. Regards, Iulian

1/72 Saab J35J Draken (Revell/ Hasegawa)
mack replied to mack's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Thank you all for the nice words. I've tried to reproduce a really worn aircraft (see attached example) but I'm far from being satisfied with the results. Nevertheless building the bigger 1/48 model is really tempting me now. Regards, Iulian -
Hello, The one and only kit I've managed to finish this year. 1/72 Saab J35J Draken: kit by Revell, photoetched by Eduard, Maestro Models pitot tube, Vallejo paints. Decals are from the kit with the exception of the large numbers on wings that were painted with home made masks. Thanks for your comments.

Nothing fancy. Stretched sprue using a candle as heat source and a pair of tweezers for the pull, after that a long “matching” session to sort out the right diameters. The stretched sprue was “painted” with a black marker. Segments were cut to the right length (using an old draughtsman tool for which I honestly do not know the English word but I can attach an image) and glued in position with PVA. Best regards, mack

The entire model was painted with agama acrylic paints, including the cowling; I'm not very happy with that area (mostly forward fuselage) as it looks more like a casting than an aeroplane sheet metal part.. For me a Draken can only be in Swedish colors despite the fact that I have no ideas about the colors I should use... Hopefully I will record the progress here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234950751-saab-j-35j-draken-swedish/ Thank you all for the reactions, mack

Hello, As my Draken project is not progressing I decided to show you one of my older kit - the Polikarpov I-5 (late design). The kit is from ICM and was a pleasure to built, despite the small size. Hope someday they will scale it up to 48; I'm getting older and small biplanes aren't good for my eyesight. The color scheme is not 100% authentic; I was inspired by a b/w photo from an old book (you know, an aeroplane book from the childhood). Painted with Agama acrilics. Hopefully the other version – with individual cowlings for the cylinders “a la Bristol Bulldog” also kitted by ICM – will find the way to my workbench. Feel free to comment.

Thank you all for the reactions. Checking my references will be a very easy task as I do not have any… Just supposed from pictures of other Drakens that it should read 50, but haven’t seen actual pictures of this airplane. With your hint I’ll add an additional vote on the supposition, thanks for pointing it out. As for the empty intakes, I have to add something in there; some sort of a cone shaped piece of paper/ cardboard (inserted after fuselage closing) that will hopefully do the trick. I’ll come with additional explanations in a couple of days. I will not be near my workbench in the next days but I’ll use this time for “planning” (I hate the word). Venceremeos, mack

Hello, I’m a new member of this community and I’ve decided to start my first “in progress” topic. Honestly this decision was boosted by the very nice feedback I’ve received after posting one of my models here. The subject is “a Swedish Draken”. I have to admit that I’m not an expert neither on this flying machine nor on Swedish aviation but the memories of my early beginnings in plastic kits are strongly connected to the 1/100 scale Plastikart Draken. That was a different era, today the hobby looks more like OEM work but I do not regret it (I’m old, with job wife and kid and free time should be used efficiently, isn’t it? Too much talk, what do we have? The Revell/ Hasegawa kit (as you can see in the picture) and few “supporting” products: photoetched set and canopy masks from Eduard and turned brass Pitot tubes from Maestromodels. I do not want to spend a fortune on this subject so apart from the listed above, paints and stuff only my limited abilities will improve the model. What do I want to do? … the perfect Draken, of course. Honestly, a lot less. Just a Swedish version in “grey colours and bright orange numbers” As I said I’m not an expert so your support is highly appreciated. If you know something please say it here. I’ll try to transfer all that info into my model. Let’s start with my (first) questions: 1. Any know issues regarding the geometry of the kit? 2. My experience with Revell decals is mixed – are the decals in this boxing of any use? Do they respond to the “setting stuff” or I have to consider aftermarket decals? The big number on the upper wings is not an issue as I’ve already decided to replace it with masks and paints. 3. I’m considering Vallejo Model Air paints for this; any known recipes for the two grey shades out of Vallejo Model Air range? Venceremos, mack NB: for the moderators; considering the documentation component of this build thank you for moving the topic to a different category if you consider necessary.

Prop or jet aerobatics - what's your favourite?
mack replied to Scuff's topic in Aviation Photography
Man, I’m ready to do something illegal, immoral or unhealthy for a shot like yours; thanks for sharing. Tough question… I’ve seen the Blanix display (Blanik sailplanes duo) a couple of times and I was thrilled. There is a magic for each of the three (prop, jet, sailplanes)… hmmm, have I told you about helicopters…no, no,no... props for me, for sure. Couple of shots from my archive (not as good as yours)- 17 replies
