  1. I'm still hoping for a 1/48 Hampden, but have doubts that it will appear in my lifetime. A Manchester would be nice, too, 1/72 or 1/48.
  2. Astonishingly good, I don't know how you do it! Keep it up, sir! Incidentally, another excellent novel about the Korean War is 'The Dead, The Dying and the Damned' by D J Hollands, a national service officer in the 1st Duke of Wellington's Regiment, who served in Korea and was awarded the Military Cross Recommended read.
  3. I'm currently reading 'The Book At War - Libraries And Readers In An Age Of Conflict' by Andrew Pettegree. It's an interesting book, although slightly rambling with some interesting information. I was unaware of the book-burning carried out in the USA in the First World War, when towns and libraries decided to burn books in the German language or on German subjects in general. One music library destroyed all it's collection of work by German composers. Tough luck, Beethoven! The book does contain this remarkable statement: "A long-term sleeper agent in Kirkwall, Orkney, alerted German intelligence to the insufficiency of the anti-submarine nets at the naval base at Scapa Flow. This resulted in one of the most audacious feats of the first year of the war, when a U-boat made it's way into the anchorage and torpedoed the aircraft-carrier Oak Royal'. Andrew Pettegree is, according to the book jacket, the Professor of Modern History at St Andrews University. Oh dear.
  4. I think I'll wait for Airfix to produce one. Or maybe Valom.
  5. My shed's safe, I haven't cleared the spiders out. No way SWMBO is going in there
  6. When I was a member of a s;hooting club, back in the day, one of the other members had a Martini. He loaded his ammunition using shotgun powder, which he reckoned gave a softer recoil. It was certainly a nice rifle to shoot. I do miss those days!
  7. Must admit I hadn't considered differing laws, which was perhaps foolish of me! I have a Martini Henry, not de-activated as it's an obsolete calibre. It would be nice to shoot it, but I'm too old to start joining shooting clubs now and going through all the rigmarole of getting a FAC. It was bad enough years ago when I was shooting, I imagine it's more difficult now.
  8. Is the Brown Bess a repro as you have had it de-activated? It has always struck me as odd that an original musket, or indeed any antique firearm, would not need any certification, unless you intended to shoot it, but a repro, exactly the same but 200 years younger, requires the appropriate firearm licence.

  10. Arrived this morning from Hattons pre-owned sale so it can join the Vulcan I got from Jadlam. This looks like the year of the bomber!
  11. I think it's going to be a 1/48 Short Stirling. Don't as my why, it's just a feeling. I get these feelings every now and then.

    Really???

You're assuming, then, that the other teachers would have known the correct answers, aren't you? That might be quite a large assumption.
  15. I'm currently reading 'Command And Control' by Eric Schlosser, which is about US nuclear weapons, their development, safety features (or lack of!) and the means of command and control of nuclear forces, with a detailed look at an accident at a Titan ll missile complex in Damascus, Arkansas in 1980. It's a slightly worrying book, the lack of safety features, especially before Permissive Action Links were installed, illustrate that is's little short of a miracle that there have been no accidental detonations owing to bombs falling off or out of aircraft, aircraft catching fire with nukes on board, fires in missile silos and general cack-handedness by airmen who were supposed to be safeguarding and maintaining them. One thing that particularly interested me was the author's mention of Project Brass Ring. When thermonuclear weapons were first introduced into service, there was speculation at senior level that the bomber might not survive the blast, so consideration was given to using unmanned drone bombers, the B-47. Schlosser said t;hat the intention was for the B-47 drone to be carried by a B-36 before being released to deliver the bomb, but I haven't seen any other reference to using a B-36, the final possibility was the drone B-47 being guided by a B-47 control aircraft. A B-36 with a B-47 drone would make a very unusual 'What if?'
  16. Yes, depth charging a Soviet submarine, that could have been interesting.
