  1. Progress was slow this week as very busy with work.  I have the basic camo on now but have had some lifting which will need sorting out.  I'm probably just going to use the kit decals as I don't have the git up and go to do the whole paint all the markings bit.  ( I'm also unsure if I have more problems with lifting paint.)  I do like these colours though and she sure does shine biggrin.png  More detail paint and the some gloss is in order.  Maybe decal tomorrow?

I wish I had not mucked up the camo on the horizontal stabilisers, oh well there is always something....

Thanks for looking in on my little critter.

  2. Interesting technique with great results.  Any idea/limits to the amount you can apply in one go and get it to set?  Could you do larger windows?

I also like that you need to know when to stop adding bits to a model and call it done.  So easy to have a zillion other 'just one more' fix, do-dad or modification/ improvement.  Especially when you are as talented and inventive as you are.  I look forward to seeing this one on the base in the new year.  Inspired as always :)

  3. Progress;

Well she's up on her feet.  I managed to get the underside shot.  I tried out spraying the Air Model paints from Vallejo.  I need to work with them a lot more to be as comfortable as I am in spraying Tamiya but I do love their vibrant colours.  Still a fair bit more to do but we are getting somewhere fast.  I'm starting to work out how much room there is for the markings, we'll see how that goes.

Oh and I'm going the long way round to get those yellow prop tips but I always struggle to not have a giant ridge where the masking goes.

    Thanks for looking in.

  4. My latest critter :D

I wanted to convert this one to an earlier MkIIa and so the cannon got the chop and some filling commenced .  Drilled out the exhausts and bashed up the cockpit interior, chopped down behind the seat and added some selective gizmos to fill the empty space created.  All keeping with the exaggerated nature of the kit.  I'm just about done painting the interior and I'm about to glue everything all together.  I love that these beauties go together quickly and without any fuss. Oh and I did some wheel hubs as the kit is just a flat plate.  I did four spokes because I knew that five was a spoke too far.

I don't yet know what camouflage/markings I will apply but I've got some ideas to make stencils with the silhouette cutter.

Great little kit, I'm having too much fun :D

  5. Go on Corsairfox…- You know you want to build one of these little critters, come over to the dark side the waters fine :D  Thanks for the kind comments.  I cannot help myself. I started up the Tiger models Cute Spitfire last night, modified her into a MkIIa and am working on the interior.  Soooooo much fun Hahahahahahaha B)

Jim - These little critters are everywhere,   (  Behind You!) :) Thanks!

Andy - As I am big fan of your work your comments are very much appreciated, so glad you like the little thing.  I thought you might like the moss.  A touch trite but I like the spark of colour and these things are meant to be fun :D

Stix - All about the fun, super pleased folks seem to like them and 'get' the fun. Thanks!

  6. Great effort and to my mind wonderfully represents a fairly new vehicle without any wear and mud/weathering.  Personally I like that you haven't got her all covered in mud/grime and if I were to advise a base idea I would suggest you build a flatcar deck( the whole flatcar might be way too much but just the deck might be interesting) and mount her chained down and in transport.  Just an idea for what it's worth ;)

I'd would say you have a strong eye for what looks right to you and if you back yourself you won't go far wrong.  I'm looking forward to what you share next as this is an excellent model.  Thanks for sharing it.

II know I could just keep adding more and more but I just had to stop before I wreaked everything in my rush to just add one more thing.  For what this kit is I think she came out grand and I will build more of these and the cute series of aircraft as they are so much fun to work on.  I'll always think of my London trip when I look at this one as I bought her behind Waterloo station :)  I wasn't going to but the good lady wife insisted that I do :)

Thanks for looking in and if you have one of these kits in your stash please give it a go, they only take a few weeks and are great fun.

I hope you like my little critter.

Not really sure if it works but I'm giving it a shot :)  Needs some more work and I have to get the tracks on somehow but I'm getting there.  Not too sure if I am totally happy with the mud but you don't improve if you never try new stuff.

Thanks for all the great comments.

I'm not good at leaving things alone...

I will say that I REALLY like me Silhouette cutter, best tool I have bought in ages and worth the cash.

  11. Andy - Thanks :D I'm sure going to be on the look out for your T-34, can't wait to see what magic you work on it.  I too want a T-34, and am already thinking about casting more of the ribbed wheels as replacements for the plain ones.

I wish there was a better name for these cartoon / morphed-distorted kits.  Egg, cute and cartoon just don't work for me.  I currently call them 'critters' but that's no satisfactory either.  Any ideas?

I think the biggest thing to think of about these kits is that they sure are fun!  I'm glad you guys like this little critter so far and I hope that if you have one sitting in your stash that you break it out and build it.  You'll have a blast.

More details, I'm almost ready for primer, then paint.:yahoo:

I'm just trying to break up the finish and give me a good basis to add some paint details to.  I'm thinking of a muddy and dirty finish but I'll go with how the mood takes me.

  12. My latest insanity.  Just me messing about with these little critters, I do love building them as they are quick, fun and low pressure.  I have built most this in one day with part of a second fitting replacement tracks from an old 1/35 scale AFV Club Walker Bulldog cut down to fit.  No they don't look too much like the real deal but the didn't cost me nutting' and they look much better than the ugly ones that come with the kit. ( I think the tracks that come with these kits really let the whole series down) Not much more to do before paint, some storage and tarps, clean up some seams and it's off to the paint booth, YEAH!

  13. Progress?

Working on another figure.  This one is a straight Tamiya Russian from the newer assault set.   While well moulded I spent ages getting it to fit together and cleaned up.  Lots and lots of scrapping, sanding and tweaking to get him to hold that SMG at least plausibly.  I'm not too sure I think the Tamiya figures are worth the hassle but they do come with some great gear and I suppose would be excellent 'fodder' for those that can modify the pose to suit their needs.  I spent hours scrapping back the undercuts and adding folds to the backpack alone. Cost vs time / plastic vs resin.  :hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm:

I have started to block in the flesh in acrylics, enamels and oil paints.  This time working inside out ie. flesh then uniform not the other way round like I did the other figure.  I am going to try and add more variation to the colours of the uniform and equipment to see if that looks a bit better.  Practice, practice and more practice at least this time I have a better idea of what colours to start with.

  14. Thank you John for your lovely comment and support.  I am heartened by your response.  Hopefully I'll have as much luck with the other figures. I have to work on the eyes, and face more...

I did manage to get the poster kiosk mostly finished.  Only now do I know what I should have done to make it better.  Next time, and there will be a next time as I really like this bit of kit,  I'll get many copies of the same poster and do it more like the reference pics, and not weather the paint as much but where's the fun in that? ;)

Just more fooling around.  I will need to stop soon because I will stuff this up if I keep fussing with it.  I do way to hit the whole figure with some Dullcoat and then go in and add some layers of Future to vary the gloss on different items to see if that makes any difference.  Just a few more tweaks and then the long wait for the oil paints to dry.

    Thanks for looking in.

  16. Just been messing about with figure painting.  Not something I'm too used to doing though I've been practicing of some pilots lately.  I have throw pretty much everything I know at this one to see if I can get an acceptable result, acrylics, enamels and oils to see if something works.  It really helps that this Stalangrad resin figure is very nicely moulded and has some neat detail.

I have to man up and do the boots and the flesh next.  I'm not too confident about the eyes but you cannot get better without failing so….

If this one comes out okay I can at least try the other four figures I want to include in this diorama.  If not, well then I'll have to come up with a plan B :)

Thanks for looking in.  If you have any advise on improvements let me know what I've stuffed up.

I had to see if I could get a star in there too.  Mainly to add some colour on what will be a very green composition.  I should have thought a bit more about the star's placement.  I could have moved it up, say 10-15mm and I think it would have looked a bit better.  I went for centred which is okay but not what I had envisaged.  I am thinking about adding a smaller version of the end lettering to the side as well but Il sleep on it before I decide.  I'm just gaining more experience as I go along.

  18. Progress,

This one sat about for a bit because I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do for the nameplate.  Too many choices. I wanted to finish the base first and fit the model to that rather than the other way around. because in the past I have screwed up a finished model while trying to get it to fit the base.  Now that I have a Silhouette cutter I thought a stencilled nameplate could work.

    JSU-152%2037-L.jpg

    JSU-152%2036-X2.jpg

I have also swapped out the trolly pole for a resin poster kiosk as I think it makes for a more balanced composition.  While this was sitting on the SoD I have been getting more details built and made a lot of bricks and rubble that I'l  play with next.  Nice to see this one back on the workbench.

    Thanks for looking in.

  19. Outstanding as always, Andy.  Looks like an enormous metallic moth.  Very tough to have an interesting finish on something that large without any markings to give a sense of scale.  Pity you cannot have it hovering over a cityscape to show how vast this thing would be.  I always so enjoy your builds, so wonderful and inspiring.

  20. This old Hasegawa kit came out pretty well in the end.  It was a BDay present and I've added nothing but a spare pilot figure, some paint and a few little bits of styrene.  Cut my own stencils for the markings and stole some little decals from the spares box.  Not too shabby considering the cost and a lot of fun too.

    I hope you like her.

  21. A tiny update.

I have been banging away all afternoon and I have got to the big unveiling, I always have mixed feelings about taking the canopy masks off because I alway stuff something up.  Well, as usual I didn't get exactly what I wanted.  I have chipping and a bit of frosting in the back bit and I stupidly forgot the centre frame of the main canopy.

    Schwable%2059-L.jpg

Managing my own expectations is the hardest part of modelling for me.  I have a vision in my head before I start a model of just how I want it to look but it never gets anywhere near it. :deadhorse:  The miss match between desire and actual skill is sometimes a bit disheartening but I do keep trying to get better.

Does anyone have a good method for masking that allows for multiple coats of paint on canopies but doesn't result in a ridge that looks hideous or flakes off and looks even worse?  I'm thinking that I should maybe remove the masks partway through the painting and re-mask to help knock down the ridge.  Any thoughts?

I'll do some remedial work on this bird tomorrow when I'm in a better frame of mind as there is very little left to do.  She looks pretty good apart from the areas that look horrid.  I do like seeing the 262 with bombs under the nose for a change.  Though next time I might do the 21cm rockets?  Next time?  I must be nuts...

  22. I took a long hard look at myself and then decided not to go down the oil dot path, too much and too risky for this black duck.  I instead flat coated the model and then did multiple passes with very thin buff, and light grey and a light brown to tie the finish together.  Then I broke out some of my new crayons, water soluble, blend able pastel crayons.

    Schwable%2058-X2.jpg

They work a bit like a cross between a watercolour pencil and tradition pastels.  They go on very well over a flat finish and can be sharpened to a point to make intense scratches.  But the material can be blended and smudged just like traditional pastels.  If you stuff up you can totally remove the material with a wet cotton bud/paint brush.  I'm sure that someone with some talent could really go to town with these crayons.  Me, I'm a hack but I get things done in a brute force kind of way.

    Schwable%2056-L.jpg

    Schwable%2057-X2.jpg

I'm going to do a bit more but not too much.  There are about a zillion colour of the crayons available, some metallic.   I've yet to play with them though I'm going to see how they work on the walkways/under the canopy area.  I should with luck get the last of the painting done this weekend.  Then it's only the little details and she'll be done! :frantic:

Thanks so much to all who drop in for a look. I hope you enjoy.
