  1. Thanks for all this. After my post I started realizing how much I have to learn about paint and your follow up comment really confirmed it. Turns out I do have some experience with lacquer based paints from using MFS 🙃. I have a cheap little spray booth venting outside and a good 3M mask with organic vapour cartridges, so all good on PPE. Forgot to buy enamel thinner for the xf-21 (they did not have it in acrylic) so painting will have to wait until tomorrow. Learning is the fun part !
  2. I wish I could laugh and thank a post with the reactions, instead of being forced to choose one. I have access to everything you mentioned but have no experience using lacquers. My LHS is great, I love going there, the employee’s are all salt of the earth types and their paint/model inventory are pretty decent. Next time I will pickup some Alclad paint and have a play. @Ngantek So much better, this actually get’s me excited (my wife say’s she wants to paint her nails with it 😬😬🤢). Many thank’s again for the correction! Finally some nice weather here in Toronto this past week. Got to cut my WIP mini pitch with my Greensmaster 1000 @0.75” …one of my favourite pastimes.
  3. Thank you again for the encouragement and tips Just using Tamiya acrylic’s for the metallic paints. I’ll try a thicker mix next time. Ah I have picked the wrong colour for the underside, thank you for pointing that out!! I want to do scheme C…
  4. Sometimes I miss the forest for the trees, thanks for the tip! My Progress report for yesterday and today. If I had seen the above message I would have left it but I couldn’t resist messing with the canopy seam. First I attacked it with my sanding sticks. Then I thinned some Tamiya putty and it flowed into the gap pretty nicely. Forgot to take a picture of this step. After that I sprayed the undercarriage. Clearly I messed up as you can see but I don’t think it will be a problem. I struggle with metallic paint. Regardless of the consistency or pressure it just will not flow out in a proportional fashion. I would describe it as binary… on and off. Today I sprayed another coat of MFS 1500 on the underside of the wings and anywhere else I had sanded. ^ riveted over a access panel 🙈 Sorry for the recent repetition, like the lancaster I got a bit stuck on this filling/priming Stage. However I am happy to report that I will now be moving on to colour. Starting with the extremely uninspiring Tamiya XF-19 sky grey for the underside. Maybe it’ll look better once it’s on.
  5. I admire the blistering pace and dedication you put into you’re modelling, through thick and thin. I Would not have guessed you were sick judged by you’re output 😛 Hope you feel better soon.
  6. This is very cool! You must be learning a ton while battling a kit like this. Following along.
  7. Thank you, it means a lot that people are enjoying my modest build. Do you have a thread for you’re Spit? If so please share it here
  8. Calling the engine cowling seam done. Where the front of the canopy meets the fuselage looks horrible. Pretty sure this was caused by me removing it from the sprue like a butcher. I will try to clean this up… Also behind the cockpit needs some attention. How do you ever finish a model ?
  9. Ha ha! i was being slightly sarcastic when claiming to have solved my dust issues but hey its a start 👍. I also ordered some tack cloth from Amazon but it seem’s to be lost in the metaverse... These gaps u speak of give me nightmares!!!
  10. SWMBO or as I call her the detective has been run down all week, so my Daddy time has been way up. Which of course means modelling time is down. I like this hobby b/c I am in no rush to finish I just barely remembered to spray cockpit green as a first coat on the canopies! Later on between jolly jumper sessions, I sprayed some black MFS 1500 on the whole model. This was fun and scratched my airbrushing itch for now. I have more sanding to do on the underside of the fuselage but other than that I am pretty happy with the primer coat. I was not happy with the seam line around the front canopy, re did the glue job and added some Mr Surfacer 500 . Have not looked at the spitfire in the sober light of day but hoping its nearly ready for colour !
  11. Masking Very small p/e Chaotic working conditions I will hopefully be back later
  12. Chipped away at the spitfire last night. I needed a kick, thanks @Wlad! Sadly i lost this piece, probably from transporting the model to work and back. I glued the flap in the closed position to hopefully hide the missing pipe. Pray for me that this was the last Mr. Surfacer application. I have learned nothing, so I have the canopies at work today in an attempt to get the masks on...
  13. Dust has been an annoyance for me and a large part of the problem is the paper towel I’ am using to wipe down my models. https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxpi74SeYkwzMXjr08cFu8_AmROnxGMFND My brainwave was to order some microfibre clean room wipes from Amazon. The material reminds me of the gloves one would wear while handling expensive objects. Bliss !
  14. Coming from Canada and living in the UK for a few years, I was never so cold. "Why are you shivering? Aren't you from Canada!?" they would all say...
  15. Thanks, hard procrastinations are ongoing with the radiator! I have heard several people mention that the finicky factor is high In other news, I have pledged the canopy pieces Exciting times ahead.
  16. Yes, I was thinking white glue for now and then Micro Kristal Klear later. Does that sound reasonable ? I’am thinking I might have to remove it at some point.
  17. it’s a process… I have not attached a canopy to a model since I was 12. Should I dip the canopies in pledge ?
  18. Just got some black MLT 1500 sprayed on the seam lines The top of the engine cowling needs lots of work. See you soon!
  19. Thanks! I actually ran into the problem you mentioned at the end of you’re post WRT wiping away all the filler when I tried sans tape on the engine cowling. I will struggle to explain myself but will give it a shot. I use the MLT on a Q tip and start on the tape. I try to get most of the MLT off the tape while also carefully trying to smooth the actual edge. Then remove the tape and gently clean it up with a clean and moist Q tip. I was making it up as I went but it seemed to work out.
  20. Only made some small progress last night. Got these INVISIBLE grills super glued in place. I almost skipped this step but i think it would have bothered me knowing i left these out... so in they went... I placed them just off the bulkheads so i could get some glue on and then pushed them home. Once glued onto the wing, If i shine a light directly down the cooler you can kinda, just barely see the P/E Here it is in situ Next up I had some fun with Mr. Surfacer 500 on the wing root joint. I have never used it before for filling seamlines and I was pretty impressed. Wish i did this on my Lancaster. I have taken the spitfire to the office today in the hopes of sneaking in some more bodywork
  21. WOW.. sad..all those hours. Very cool picture however.
  22. It was hard to get any modelling done with a good conscious during The Detectives first mothers day. Later on i did sneak downstairs to get a bit of work done on the spitfire. I got this lower engine cowling glued on and glued up the two piece air scoop. I noticed it needed filler so decided to take care of it before gluing it in place. I am hoping tonight i will have some freedom to make actual progress... i miss airbrushing... @Procopius.. at least she told me it was in the trunk and asked me to store it in the garage
  23. It’s funny, after I post these close up photo’s I notice problem areas that are basically invisible to my naked eye… or at least the photo makes it much easer to see.
  24. Thanks, I just used black mr finishing surfacer 1500 as a primer then lightly sprayed Tamiya XF-71 The Detective and our child returned home today so the party is over . It is genuinely nice to see them but The Detective was exhausted, much more so when she left. I still managed to get some progress in on the spitfire last night and this evening. Starting with yesterday I got the undercarriage built up, wings glued together and attached the wings to the fuselage. It all seemed to go together pretty well. The wing root isn’t great (my fault) and I found the wheel wells pretty fiddly until I got the hang of it. Tonight I assembled the tail pieces, ailerons and wing tips . So happy I finally got to use my sanding stick 😛 Got a little trigger happy with the hobby knife so I had get the filler out.. I think I’ll stop here for the night and creep the forum.
