  1. The first thing to tackle is the cannon blisters. The obvious solution of carving off the rear portion and fattening up the sides with filler did not appeal as there was no chance that they'd end up the same size. I recalled that the earlier Revell Vb had them as separate parts. I happen to have one in the stash, the fuselage of which will take part in a future project. Bingo!

You can see what I mean above about the cannon blister. The wing is the new Revell Vb, the replacement part is from their old effort. So how do I know the old one wasn't wrong too? Well,

Here's the same part on an Italeri wing. It's also the same size as that on both Hobby Boss and KP Vbs, varying very slightly in width, so I'm in business!

PS I don't have any plans and couldn't find a usable overhead photo of the real thing, so this'll have to do.

  2. In your position now, I'd mask off the clear parts, buy a rattle can of matt white, coat the whole thing and then paint over the upper surfaces with the Humbrol (or whatever you settle on). Acrylic is always better with an undercoat.

  3. I agree, painting the invasion stripes is easier than wrestling with the transfers and looks better too. Paint the whole area in white and then mask off the portion to be kept white using 1/4" tape*. Paint in the black: job done! An alternative, if you don't like mucking about with tape, is to cut out the black portion of the transfer and stick that down over the white.

    * some modellers (including me) use 6mm Tamiya tape for the masking but this is slightly too narrow.

  4. It does appear to be the Frog model and as such can be built as a Mk.V or a Mk.VII. The former is the bomber version, the latter the Coastal Command variant, fitted with Air to Surface Vessel radar and displaying the extra masts you spotted as well as other aerials.

  5. Hi all,

this is going to be my first ever WiP on Britmodeller (and anywhere else for that matter). The subject is the new Revell Spitfire Vb and it'll be built as W3380/RN-J of 72 Squadron, based in Acklington, August 1941. This was a presentation aircraft, flown by Squadron Leader Des Sheen and was finished in Dark Earth/Dark Green over Sky.

The kit, as you've probably heard, is not perfect. Out of the same stable as their recent Mk.IIa, it is basically sound in shape but suffers in the detail. I'll be fitting a new canopy, propeller, wheels, oil cooler and exhausts. In addition, the cannon blisters will be removed and replaced in the proper position by ones the right size.

Here are some photos of the runners to start off:

I'm aware that the quality of the photos isn't great and I aim to improve next time.

    Wish me luck,

    John.

  6. A prompt reply from emodels to my query about stocking individual pots of Hataka Blue Line: "Unfortunately not, as the UK importer has decided not to import them into the country." They will, however, continue to stock single pots of Red Line which will be imported.

Thanks, 303sqn, but Arma Hobby, like Hataka itself, is not UK based. Just concerned about postage costs.

They do on the Hataka site. I'm not aware of any UK suppliers of individual pots, though. I have the RAF set, early days but it looks like it's going to be my acrylic of choice.

  8. And if you're worried about the paint changing colour slightly as you go due to pigment issues, plan it out so that different sets of panels are painted in order. Tonal variation and all that.

I've heard mention of Dymo tape - is that the plastic tape that was used for labelling and had the letters stamped in it with the little hand held machine?

It is. Adhesion is a problem with it, you'll want to secure it with something else. Also, I found the edges to be not quite rigid enough. I am a bit on the ham-fisted side though.
