  1. It's very true that the Hobby Boss Spitfires are underrated but I feel I have to mention the awful canopy. That's more of a problem to me than the prop/wheels/wheel doors. In the end I used one from the Airfix MkI/II, with a little carving involved. This kit would also yield a De Havilland propeller if you made a Rotol Mk II or Watts Mk I.

    As an alternative, doesn't the Italeri MkV come with a choice of filters?

  2. I've read that the 45 gallon drop tanks fitted to Typhoons were the same as the ones fitted to Hurricanes. I figured I could therefore take the ones from the old 1/72 Airfix MkI/II Hurrie kit and stick 'em on a Tiffie.

    The trouble is I'm unsure whether the attachment pylons are the same and I can't find a decent photo of the real thing. I noticed that the Pavla and Airwaves aftermarket ones are different, the former look like the Hurricane ones, the latter have longer pylons going nearly to the rear of the tank. Maybe there were two different types?

  3. It's the low back ones I'm interested in really. Oddly enough I had an idea that all FR.14s were clipped but couldn't remember where I'd seen it and it's better not to rely on my memory these days. A photo of a 28 squadron machine in 1946 would of course help but I can't find one in my Spitfire books or through good old Google. You can guarantee I'll find one once the model's built.

    ...perhaps you should build four models, two of each fuselage type with each type of wing tip.

    I like your style lancfan!

  4. Evening all.

    Are the wingtips on a Spitfire FR.Mk.XIVe* standard or clipped? All of the photos I've seen have the clipped ones, but the Fujimi kit I have (72128) has standard ones. This depicts four far-eastern examples, MV349, NH869, MV320 & SM888. I suppose it could vary from airframe to airframe but there weren't many built and I've yet to see one with the normal span.

    Thanks,

    John.

    * or should that be FR.Mk.14e ?

  5. Well done, I hope mine turns out to be as good as that one.

    Regarding the panel lines, someone on these forums (though I think it might have been the Mk IX he was referring to) said that they were 'v' shaped and therefore a light sanding would sort them out in terms of width as well as depth. It might be worth checking that out on the Mk I/II.

  6. this is probably one of the worst kits Airfix have put out in the past few years

    Cobblers! (He said, politely.)

    "an acceptable standard" - that'll be your standard then? I don't care about the cockpit, I can buy one if I want, and replace the canopy too. The choice would be mine. "Molded oleos in the landing gear as well... they require replacement" - no they don't. A piece of unnecessary assembly avoided.

    "The detailing (particularly on the wings) are very deep... Its a real pain to fix, requiring filling and rescribing". It requires nothing of the sort, my painting technique would soon fill them up :-)

    John.
