  1. Well no slippers, but no Gladiator either. Instead I got the nice new Airfix Typhoon Ib! Very happy with that, what a cracking kit
  2. In Normandy, dust caused real problems with the engine. The first attempt at addressing this, a dome-shaped filter was prone to being ejected when the engine backfired. The solution was to fit a different type of filter with doors on the front that opened when there was a backfire and kept the filter in situ. These resembled the doors on a cuckoo clock, hence "cuckoo doors". John.
  3. I've seen plenty of tips for removing all the paint off a model (oven cleaner in a bag for instance) but can't find anything on getting rid of paint on just one part. I have a Spitfire where I'm happy with the undersides but not with the top. It sounds like Modelstrip might do it, as it is a paste, but it looks a bit expensive. This is something I'd like to do as a low budget sideshow while building other stuff. Are there any alternatives based on household products? Ta, John.
  4. That is impressive. Any particular sort of Solartrim to look out for? Does it come in different sizes?
  5. I had hoped to be the proud owner of one of these on Sunday after the number of hints dropped, but judging by the look of surprise on my daughter's face when spouse reminded her it was Father's Day, it looks as though an addition to my slipper collection is on the cards. Still, not long until Christmas...

    Swearing

Years ago now, as a teenager, I was standing in a group at a mate's house, every other word a four-letter one. His father knew a thing or two about language as he was head translator at a large local industry. He heard us and as he approached I feared a telling off but he merely said, "what I don't understand is what you lot are going to say when you hit your thumb with a hammer". The point was that there are times when it is appropriate to use swear words but Greg is right, a forum such as this is not one of them.
  7. Going for a lift now, according to Nick Higham on Twitter.
  8. I'm currently having a go at the canals on the Airfix Hurricane IIc and am trying out the Tippex approach. Coat the trenches, leave for an hour then rub off the excess with a white spirit moistened cloth. Repeat as necessary. It seems to be working but I'll only know for sure once the paint is on. Regarding the Airfix Spitfire, I remember reading (forget where) that the panel lines are 'v' shaped so sanding down reduces not just the depth but the width too. That could be the Mk IX though - the memory's not what it was... John.
  9. Propeller spinner would be black (night?) during 222's spell at Hornchurch.
  10. Well I haven't found any photographs of 222 Squadron Spitfires that show the position of the roundels, but I have just come across an illustration for ZD-R in Paul Lucas' s book, "The Battle for Britain" that shows small ones at the very wingtips. John.
  11. Too right, far more interesting than Brazil v England. Not confident though.
  12. From about 21.00 I hear...all digits crossed
  13. I read somewhere that Sea Fury wheel wells were covered with a generous film of hydraulic fluid. I represented this om my model with a wash of brown ink. Sorry, I can't find the reference though. John.
  14. The spinner off the Airfix Mk I Hurricane and the Quickboost equivalent are even smaller I'm afraid. However, the attempt at the earlier Rotol spinner in the old Airfix Mk I/IIb comes out at 10.3mm. It's slightly too pointy but there's loads of plastic there to sand away. The Hurricane propeller itself is way too small though.
  15. My trusty £8.99 digital caliper and I make it 8.7mm. John.
  16. I definitely wouldn't claim to be an expert on Spitfires on here, maybe at the pub, but not here. I know my place...
  17. ..though you may be better off awaiting the opinion of an expert :-)
  18. I believe 222 Squadron were at Hornchurch from August to November 1940 and therefore would have had underwing roundels as they reappeared in June.
  19. The Aeroclub props for the Whitley are P047 (at least, that's what they sold me) John.
  20. Hmm, there's a thought. The red-brown dope might add some interest to the model. The colour doesn't look to dissimilar to the spinner which I believe to be red...
  21. Hi, I'm building a Spitfire LF Mk Vb, EP688, used by 40 Sqn for photo reconnaissance. The only photo I know of is here. It shows the camera port covered over. Does anyone know what was used to cover it? Whatever it is, it seems to be a decent match for the dark earth on the camouflage. Thanks, John.
  22. Thanks for that Graham, packed with useful info, and a good suggestion on the u/c doors - in fact the (suitably sanded) 'wheels up' doors in the Airfix kit might suffice. What's different about the Rob Taurus canopies that compensates for the step behind the cockpit?
  23. That's a really good finish and captures the look nicely. RussG, does that mean you have serial/code combinations for some Mk IId aircraft? John.
  24. Well, there's certainly a feeling of bad news/good news about this thread. The bad news is that list of faults and the knowledge that the rear fuselage is in fact not too narrow (rendering my wangled Lancaster rear turret useless) - the good news is that woody is going to sort it all out and all will be explained (no pressure). John.
