  1. That was my understanding: Hu19 is Post Office/Cherry Red, Hu238 is Red Arrows Red. Originally I thought the former was for Gnats and the latter for Hawks. Then I read that Red Arrows Red was used on Gnats (probably in the thread linked above) and now I just don't know. The safest thing, I suppose, would be to find some markings for an early Gnat. Are there any? John.
  2. Don't think I'll get too worked up if it's based on the Mk.II. The basic shape is ok, so it's usable but there are spurious lumps and bumps on the wings. The peripheral parts let it down badly: the canopy, wheels and propeller unit all need replacing. There's a thread on BM which is worth a read, if you're interested, especially later on when The Wooksta! gets hold of a copy. John.
  3. Try mixing Sky with RAF Dark Green. Edgar said that he'd been told that that's what the erks did when they ran out of the real thing. John.
  4. I don't recall any issues with the wing root. The only problem I had was with the fuselage halves, easily solved by lightly sanding the radiator sides and ensuring no paint got on that area or in the groove it sits in. John.
  5. That's what I wanted to hear, to be honest. I fancied painting that one in Post Office red and if I get round to buying a Hawk, doing that one in that funny orangey colour Arrow Red (Hu238), for contrast. Cheers, John.
  6. Morning all! I notice that the Airfix Red Arrows Gnat starter set (A55105) has Humbrol 19 for the main colour. However, I read that in their last few seasons the Gnats had 'Red Arrows Red' (Humbrol 238?) paintwork. As the markings in the kit appear to be for a later example (1978/9), which paint should I be using? Thanks, John.
  7. yes, I remember the double take when first opening the box and removing the plastic tray in vain. They are easily sourced, though, just adapt the wheels-up parts from an Airfix kit. Then it's just a propeller unit and a canopy to go... John.
  8. As above. I can confirm that the Hataka paints go on nicely and the colour matching looks decent. Their Blue Line range is optimised for brushing. John.
  9. The finished Tamiya model doesn't really cut the mustard, it isn't a rivet counting issue, the whole thing just looks wrong. To quote Graham, above, "do not consider". Even the Hobby Boss ones have better shape. The KP is easily the best choice in my view. John.
  10. I saw this link to an IPMS build article on the Airfix Blenheim IV in a BM thread but can't now find it to give credit to the poster. It may be useful. John.
  11. Excellent, this thread is cracking on apace! It's good to see a Mk.I in there too for the simple and selfish reason that I'll be told how to build the one in my stash. John.
  12. This brings back memories. My 20+ year old daughters are now fine company, spouse is placid and all is well. It wasn't always like that, though. If I'd looked after my own well-being the same as you are PC, maybe I wouldn't have a stress-related eye problem, anxiety, depression and so on. Good luck, carry on as you are and please continue to delight us with your modelling. John.

    Hataka Paints

I'm quite pleased with mine so far. Early days, but brushes out well straight from the pot. No problems up to now, I'd say they'd benefit from a bit of thinning but yet to find out for sure. John.
  14. I'd hold on for someone who knows about Sea Hurricanes to come along before sticking or cutting anything. I think the Ic only existed on paper, except maybe for an evaluation model, which is why you can't find photos. John.
  15. There's a discussion here covering Halifax payloads that will, hopefully, answer your question. John.
  16. Any tips on how to assemble that propeller unit to get the angle and pitch right would be gratefully received! I was hoping that there was a Freightdog one. They do one piece units... John.
  17. Does the Mk.II have a resin spinner with individual white metal blades? If so, I believe it's the Heritage one. John.
  18. I wasn't aware that Freightdog did a Mk.II as well as their Mk.VI. Heritage Aviation did one but I believe this has been discontinued. John.
  19. I'm still not confident. Would it be possible to have a crack at building it wheels down but revert to wheels up if it all went pear-shaped? John.
  20. Very nice models you've done there! Did the undercarriage fall together though? I have this kit and am a bit worried about that part of the construction... John.
  21. It is a nice kit. The only problem I had involved the fit of the radiator. I'd got some paint on its sides and in the groove it was meant to sit in. The tolerances are so tight that it meant that the fuselage halves would not close properly. It's just a case of giving the sides of the radiator a light sand and making sure paint doesn't get on the mating surfaces. No big deal. Looking forward to the build, one of the Airfix revival's better efforts. John.
