According to Syhart decals the Rafael M is approximately FS36231 Dark Gull Grey & the Armee de L'Air version is approx FS36293 Matt Grey, so different shades but all said & done, they are both greys, then there is weathering, lighting & perception. Whatever looks right I guess.

    Steve.

I checked the color of real Rafale with my FS color chip and FS 36251 came as the closest but Grey Rafale has slight bluish tint.

that almost confirms my suspicion, as all the pics i have been looking at seem to show a darker grey for the M.

Just talked with Dassault engineering last week, he told me that all french rafales have same color. It’s because several parts like canopy, nose, etc are built in “Grey Rafale” color from the Factory and other parts are painted to match those parts.

as the closest FS color is 36251, but Grey Rafale has slight bluish tint. I compared the real Rafale color to my FS color chip myself.

Not being American-centric just I don't have access to anything in a tinlet, even if I was still using enamels

I have a Revell USA boxing of the Rafale M ready to start going I am wondering what color the folks around here use for the main airframe color.

I asked this over on ARC this morning and got a response with the decal sheet colors (Zotz & SMD) as being Dark Ghost Gray main airframe with a Light Ghost Gray radome. Not to say that they are wrong but to my eyes the Rafale does not look to have a blue'ish' hint to the gray. The Revell USA box has the color as Gull Gray with no FS#, but I am thinking EITHER a Dark Gull Gray FS# 36231 (cockpit gray) or 'Aggressor Gray' FS# 36251 which is the lighter of the two in the current Mod Eagle scheme.

On Airliners.net I was looking at some Rafale M pictures and I did not see any that looked like the colors I painted my F-15 Baz in last weekend (Compas Ghost scheme)

Anyone around here have a good color - even Grunze RAF colors that may be a good match?.

    Matt

P.S. French Airforce Rafales - the same color as the Rafale M? Just a preemptive question for when the RoG updated Rafale B comes out later this year

FS 36251 is closer to "Grey Rafale" than FS 36231, but "Grey Rafale" has slight bluish tint.

I am really, really waiting for the Indonesian T-50i Golden Eagle boxing.... either by Wolfpack Design or Academy. And I am offering help if V.P or anyone else need marking details of the Indonesian GE...

Indonesian T-50i will change its camouflage in the near future... I hope Academy or Wolfpack will include this too...

If anybody has Academy/Wolfpack's contact, please let me know. I am more than happy to help....

    As promised, some pics.

Base kit is the Hobbyboss A-4E. There is an Israeli modified E out there I believe but this one was available so I went for it.

The box is absolutely crammed with plastic - a long way from the Matchbox kit that was my last Skyhawk. Bigger than I expected too.

This is the aftermarket I'll be using to turn the unsuspecting USN bird into the exotica mentioned above. The Indonesian mrkings are all at the bottom of the sheet. It's my first foray into using resin. It'll be PE and proper colours next, you mark my words :o

Speaking of proper colours, the FS numbers given with the decals are way out. The light grey I've worked out and the blue is Intermediate Blue so I worked back from the name to find a match. The  light brown is actually another grey when I look it up so I have no idea yet what I'm going to use there. I'll build it first though and worry later.

    Hi,

I used Gunze Lacquer #C338 (FS 36495), Gunze #EC-20 for the brownish grey and Testors #2132 for the blue color.

.... however, after checking several references on the Beagle I discovered a sad fact that, as 45-36 MAN and RAT-52 weapons installed on external pylons drastically reduced the aircraft speed and maneuverability, making flying tricky, only a single test Il-28T flew with these external racks installed. The operational Il-28Ts had their torpedo-warload installed internally in their (longer) bomb bay. This explains why Soviet and Indonesian IL-28Ts  were not seen with external weapon racks installed...

Anyway, this doesn't change the fact, that this kit will finally enable us to build an IL-28  "vanilla" bomber or an Il-28R recce variant with wingtip tanks, or an Il-28RT ELINT bird with two identical belly radomes...and of course a Il-28T with "internal" armament. You will only need to engrave a longer bomb bay  in case you choose to represent it with closed doors - in case of an open bomb/torpedo bay, however, a bit more work would be of course required to represent the longer bay...

There are also some intriguing (faired over) parts for the tail gunner position... perhaps the civil "Aeroflot" IL-20 variant used to transport "Pravda" newspaper matrices between Moscow and Vladivostok (before the times of digital data transmission) ? Maybe an Il-28U Mascot trainer could also be in the works?

    Greetings

    Diego

Indonesia.... hmmm... somebody mentioned Indonesian Beagle? :)

  7. Hi all,

This is my recently finished 1/48 Hasegawa kit with FCM decal. I built it OOB with some scratchbuild parts unique to Indonesian Skyhawk. This particular bird is one of two ex-Israeli AF's TA-4H purchased by Indonesia in 1980. She was also the last flyable Skyhawk in Indonesian service, retired in August 2004.

    Thanks for looking

  8. Hello all,

This is my recently finished model of F-14A Tomcat in 1/72. It is a nicely moulded Fujimi kit with additional items like pylons, bombs, bombrack, LANTIRN and Sparrow from Hasegawa kit, resin seats (the kit's seats are lost somewhere) and Fightertown's decal.

I detailed the cockpit's side walls and wheel wells as they are completely bare. I found a fret of Tomcat PE from old Fujimi Royal Collection that I used some of them. Painting was done using Gunze lacquer paints and weathering by oil.

I chose modex 107 (BuNo 161296) as this particular bird dropped 32 bombs and also the only Black Knights' bird to shot her gun during VF-154 Final Combat Cruise 2003 in supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was one of five that based at Al Udeid, Qatar to support mainly Special Operation Task Force CTF-20 inside Iraq.

My model is not historically accurate as the crew names and bomb marks were painted after the squadron left the area. However, Tomcat is one of my favorite fighter and in this September, US Tomcat has been retired for 10 years.

    Enjoy the pics...
