Looking good, kpnuts. It was just after this point that I struggled with the fit of the air pipes from the turbo. I wasn’t really sure why. So I’d suggest some cautious test fitting, including to the chassis and the rear bumper.
-
Looks like a good start. This is an old kit so - as you point out - there are seams etc that need a bit of work.
-
Watch-out 1 - applying lacquer too quickly over bonnet decals. Photo not great quality but you can see the whitening. It was difficult to get the decal to conform properly to the bonnet scoop.
Watch-out 2 - the front air dam colour stripe. I tried to paint Tamiya acrylic over lacquer and ended up with the acrylic 'beading'. I don't know why it beaded. Perhaps I had polished it already, I don't remember. So I handpainted. Looks OK but could be better. This area was also quite tricky to mask.
Watch-out 3 - rear bumper, etc. You can see some damage that the model sustained when it took its maiden flight off the shelf where it was stored (long story). The fit of bumper to body and engine needs careful attention as it's not as foolproof as a modern Tamiya kit.
Watch-out 4 - adhesive choice. Some of the suspension components end up taking quite some weight. Tamiya extra thin just isn't strong enough.
Watch-out 5 - Martini side-stripe placement. This needs to be thought-through carefully so that the different parts fit, and the curved sections need some work to get a fit fit.
Hope some of this helps.

Hi kpnuts, did this kit myself last year. Really enjoyed it. Not perfect. Will post some pics. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Engine parts with a very light pinwash of steel and chrome silver dry brushing. First real go at this. Think it's an improvement. A little heavier than I'd like in places but overall - and especially from any distance other than point blank - a nice impression.

Thanks, Noel... I am taking this very slowly. I've built a lot of Tamiya kits recently and - while they're great - they almost go together too well. So the test, file/drill, re-test and repeat approach for an MFH kit is really different. Starting to enjoy it 🙂

Dry brushing sounds like a good recommendation, Ron. This build is one where I’m going to take it very slowly. So any input that makes it better is much appreciated.
I’ll make a start over the coming days and share the results.

Gearbox 'end' painted steel (Mr Hobby + Mr Hobby aqueous thinner). Glad I didn't do the specified steel + black as there would have been even less contrast.
Added these parts... they sit between the two flat sixes to make it a flat twelve... if anyone knows what these are called, please feel free to educate me.
Assembled these fellas... the intake funnels go on top. another example of low contrast paint... the body is gun metal plus black... the stubby parts are flat black.
Then test fitting the cylinders into the block and the cylinder head on to the cylinders. Generally, better than i feared. There is a gap between cylinder and cylinder head... some of the cylinders fit well... one or two don't seat all the way down on the reciprocating fitment lug on the cylinder head (which is white metal).
Next step is to prime and paint the small parts that are added to, e.g, the cylinder heads.

First real gluing today. Cylinder heads (I think). Bit of care needed with the instructions. The parts are asymmetric and it is possible to see this on the instructions as long as you look very carefully.
Final coat of semigloss black on the engine block before the gearbox end gets sprayed 'steel'. The instructions say steel + black; I think this won't be enough contrast versus the other parts of the engine so considering going off-piste.
Also some clean-up on the clear engine parts... air intake funnels, etc. These (i) cleaned up better than expected and (ii) took longer than expected. The before and after didn't show so well on photos. Definitely worth the sand/buff/polish + repeat routine. Still need a final work over then a wash.

Galaxyg, thanks for your posts. I’ve never looked at these types of models. But I’ve always been intrigued. I’d be really interested to know your views on the appeal.

Thanks, RL930. I love the colour scheme on that car. Good luck with that. I see the 'bags of bits' packaging approach applies to all MFH models.
I'll take a deeper look at these instructions as i'd consider this as a project myself... once/if ever the Pink Pig is finished.
Why the Pink Pig? We lived in Germany for a few years, and I've always had a soft spot for Porsche, so one half-term I took the kids on a road trip... Stuttgart, Nuremberg and back to Frankfurt. We stopped in Zuffenhausen - Porsche's home town - and visited the museum. Well worth a visit. And absolutely fell in love with the Pink Pig. It's so absurd it's sublime.
Anyway, today's work has been on painting and fitting then some corrections on the... I'm not sure what the name would be... but you'll see from the pictures
I realised that I had missed a seamline that needed filing so a small re-spray needed on the ends.

No photos today as the work was lots of cleaning up parts, washing, drying, test fitting... you know the drill! Should be painting some more engine parts tomorrow as well as test fitting the engine subframe.
Thanks for the comments, Flintstone... it sparked a thought... I'm going to prime in white then perhaps a coat of the light pink to see how it looks... and it might be no bad 'second primer' for the darker pink if this looks like the better route in the end.

RL930, the key ingredient seems to be patience! Please post pics of the instructions and the parts. I’d love to see how 1/24 compares to 1/12.

More progress on the doors... definitely an improvement... not 100% there but getting there with my trusty pliers and a soft cloth to protect the metal.
Plus - and I suspect the MFH fans out there know this already - an awful lot of part sorting. I'll spare you any pictures. It's best summarised by a large purchase of storage boxes, including one labelled 'UISP'. Unidentified Small Parts. There are a lot of small parts that are not so readily identifiable from either the parts list or the instructions.

Straightforward progress over the last few days... stripping back and painting the engine block and the cylinders.
Stripping back because I had used a 'value' primer (identity concealed to protect the innocent) which produced a weird surface effect which then caused problems with the paint. I used Tamiya Lacquer Thinner and it seemed to do the job.
For the base coat, I used Tamiya grey primer. Went down like a dream as always so this (Tamiya) will go back to being my standard.
Tamiya semi-gloss can for the engine block. (This is just 1 coat so not complete yet. The gearbox end also needs painting another colour over the black.)
Tamiya X10 +XF1 for the cylinders and ?cylinder head? The white metal paints up very nicely, really bringing out the detail. I've not painted right to the end of the cylinders as these plug into the block and won't be visible.

Paints are different part numbers, ie, they’re supposed to be different. But I was surprised by the amount of difference and the fact that Porsche 917/20 colour is so light. Perhaps it will dry down darker.
-
Thanks for the advice, Tankerman... I took the plunge this morning and started bending the left hand door by hand. Initial results look like an improvement. Stopping for the moment while I'm ahead and will tackle the final fit when I have the time and won't be rushed.
Paint has been the other piece of work this week... I had previously ordered the 991 RSR Pink Pig colour, so I ordered some 917/20 from Zero... remarkably different colours in the bottle (well shaken). The 917/20 is very light. Will do some test sprays on the proverbial plastic spoons.

Today's step... checking the fit of the doors to the body... see photo... one of the doors somewhat fits, the other has a massive gap.
In the instructions, they do say that some parts might need straightening out... but the lower parts of the doors are quite thick. I'm concerned that if i try to bend them by hand, i'll break them. or if i use a hammer, it'll irreparably deform them.
On the other hand, the only build thread that i've seen for a completed Pink Pig had the doors open... fit problem miraculously disappears. But that's a bit of a cop-out.
Any past experience? Ideally with the Pink Pig?

Question for the forum... started with a basic clean-up of the body... wash with dishwashing detergent then old toothbrush/toothpaste... noticed a very distinct darkening to the resin near what i believe was one of the pour/injection points. seems to repel water and feels same as the lighter parts. assume it's not a 'red flag' for painting.

Thanks Jeroen... the Martini 935 was my first 1/12 scale Tamiya... is it 'the done thing' to post past builds on RFI? if so, i can pop a few on... variable quality as i started to get in to cars

Since it seems like the links are working for the photos, here are the instructions for interest...

Thanks to everyone for your kind words of welcome. 'Slowly does it' on this build, I think, is great advice.
Here is a comparison photo so you can see the size of the thing... it is genuinely massively wide...

This is my first time trying to upload images...please let me know if you can see it... i can't

Hello everyone,
New to the site as a posting member... been building models for about the last 8 years... originally planes but moved on to cars... long story short, decided i'd stretch myself and bought the MFH Pink Pig. Through Hiroboy.
Problem number 1, the front cowl arrived broken. Replaced free of charge very quickly so that was great. Brilliant customer service.
During lockdown the box remained untouched... i looked at it... it stared back... i looked at the instructions and hid in fear.
I've decided to give this a go knowing that it is going to be a real challenge.
I'll start posting my first steps.
I've been looking for some build threads but haven't found much. Has anyone on the forum built one?
Wish me luck?
