Hi & welcome to the hobby and BM.
I keep a lump of BluTac on the top of a old coffee jar (which is filled with lead shot for ballast!) & when painting things like wheels ect,I cut the spru off & stick the sprue end in the BluTac.That was it keeps it steady while painting. You can get a low stick tape to edge the canopy when painting, dont use masking tape as it leaves a sticky residue on the plastic which is a bugger to remove! I'm not a fan of this Maskol stuff for masking canopys.
I also have a old metal pencil case as you will always get bits break off the sprue & lie in the kit box.Put them in the pencil box & you wont lose them.
Good brush to use for dusting off models is a girls blusher make up brush!I kid you not!!The long fat bristle head means you wont break off bits when dusting.
Instead of pliers for cutting the sprues, invest in a pair of fine electrical snips, like for fibre optic working.Nail files & those nail file pads (cheap as chips from Superdrug) are better than sheets of sandpaper.(the file sticks last for ages)
Anway,
Welcome to Mad Mikes Play Away site for the over forties!

Good looking Big Fin.
By doing a GR4A, I can do away with the cannon troughs. This might mean I can get an easier fit with the electronic boxes, but knowing my luck this will probably turn out to be totally wrong.

The only one that's left is RAF Bruggen, now Javelin Barracks.Unlike the rest it's 100% intact & is used as a airbridge at times.I gather the is a small RAF contingent there manning the ATC but that's about it.

Chris here is a link to my Tonka GR4 build with the CAM set.

They're rocket pods fitted with a frangable nose car that shatters when the rockets fired.
-
It is a sunshine bomb,Mk43 I believe & they were also carried by RAF Nimrods up until around mid 90's.
Ahh the memories of convoy duties & load outs....
-
Sorry,Checked last night & I'm afraid I dont have a spare.Got to thinking, could you scratch build one from a 1/72 Hindenberger tank? They scale compare about the same size & shape.
-
I might have a spare from my Revell RAF kit.I'll check later,If it came with 2,then I have a spare.
-
I always thought they were a blue/grey like our overalls we used to get.I have seen dark blue flightsuits worn in old photo's tho.
-
Very nice job made especially brilliant by the choice of the best squadron in the RAF!
I'm doing mine with a black fin & spine like the display jets from the 90's.....
Mmmmmmm.....Wonder what a all black jet would come out like??
(And before you sarcastic, pedantic buggers say "all black"...

-
I gave up! The model shop ran out of filler!
-
Flight suits were dark blue, gloves white leather, helmet colour varies, mostly silver or yellow from what I gather.
-
Cheers Karl, started it last night &,funnily enough, one of the wings is a bit 'off' as well as the is a inward "V" sort of lgap on the horizontal stabs, some filler there!
Other than that,it looks like it's going to ba a nice build.

Thanks for this Karl,
Bought one at the airshow the other day to go along with the so-far unbuilt Wyvern (again a Trumpeter kit)
Anything I should look out for on the build?

Nice job Niel,
Just one small critique.I've never seen RBF tags like those on any ejection seat I've came accross.Seat pins are removed by the pilot & are stowed in a witness board in the cockpit. If my memory is correct, the one for the hunter is on the right side of the cockpit on the sidewall. That way the pilot & lineys can see if they are all fitted or not.You may find them like that on a training seat, but not on a operational jet.

Just got back from the annual local airshos, got some pics to upload later.Best bits were the 2 Harriers on static,The Huey chopper who,it turns out,is flown by a workmate's friend from when both of them were in the RAF together!Got some good pics of that.Sadly I did'nt get many of the Eurofighter Typhoon.Moving too f****** fast for my Digi Camera to keep up!
I'll bung the photo's up later.
-
I actually have a photograph of one of the Argie ones kept in Timmies hanger at MPA if anyone needs it.
Merv
-
That's 'cos it's camouflaged silly
NEVER,I would'nt have guessed.....

-
Not saying much. Correct me if I'm wrong but when you emerged again you were the ONLY Typhoon squadron!

Sheesh, next we'll have someone from Shiny-Twelve claiming to be the best Buccaneer squadron bar none. And conveniently forgetting about 809!
FLY NAVY!
Exactamundo!
That's why 17 were the first, you always give the best to the best....
809???..Who were they anyway? Was'nt that the telephone extension number for the dog section??

-
Nope,Fraid not,We left Bruggen, went into mothballs & emerged as the BEST Typhoon Squadron bar NONE!

-
Awww...Why are you spoiling the kit & doing a 61spare kite?
Do something with class, panache & balls like a 17f Sqn Tornado GR1 from THE BEST Tornado SQN BAR none!

-
Looks good,
I'm doing my 17 Sqn with a black fin & spine.
-
Number one is a cooling vent or intake if my memory's correct.,The is another one just behind the Navigators right shoulder next to the intake trunk, they pop open when ground power is applied.
Apart from tht,VolvoWills correct on everything else.
-
Well maybe they do in hindsight but I dont recall them.Mind you, being a plumber, did'nt have much to do with riggers & sooties.
