  1. Absolutely superb example. Should be very proud of that. Accomplished with all of the hardships that life sent to test you, it seems you found some solace in the building of it. You did a fine job. As said, don't stop! Perhaps a Bismarck to complete the pair!
  2. I have this kit as my next build. Will be starting it very shortly. Its an old kit needs some serious aftermarket additions The top drawings book is a must. I'm going to procure this one that my father has. The King George V Class Battleships https://amzn.eu/d/hBWThur I have bought the following Eduard PE sets from hannants. All for the 45 kit. 3 of them about £50 in total. Railings, boats and detail. Master model barrels for the 14" and the secondaries. Once again from hannants Hunter wooden deck from ebay. Impressed with it. Dawngrocerystore was the seller in China. Super quick delivery about 20 quid Got aa for the oerlikons, both single and twin as well as the bofors from black cat models. They look excellent and have use them for flakveirlings before. Was going to go for the pom poms as well however it was getting a bit pricey, would be 50 quid for those alone, plus the Eduard PE set has detail for them. Twin 20mm Oerlikon gun on power mount Mk.V (x4) x 2 20mm Oerlikon Mk.10 gun and square opening shield (x12) x 3 40mm Bofors quad gun Mk.2 Mod.3 (x4) x1 About £50 Hope the above helps, I looked at the pontos set which is amazing however its only for the PoW kit, I would just mess up making rhe changes to the kgv kit. Plus the pontos set is too nice to mess about with! Good luck! Cheers, Dave.
  3. Lol, i just set one up today (flickr), I'm an IT consultant too 😅. Keep practising as I'd very much like to see how you get on!
  4. Wow that's some stash you have there 😳. Need to see how you're getting on with it. Build thread anywhere? Thanks for the advice, I am definitely swayed by the micromaster items. Got the Prinz to finish first, when I'm towards the end of that I'll make a decision. If the pontos set is out then it will be a tough one, if not then its a straightforward one.
  5. Firstly thank you for taking the time and the info. I've followed some of the Model sheds build of the hood and Bismarck using the Pontos set (1/200) and it is amazing engineering (and model making) on both. The sets do look fantastic and can only guess the level of work that goes into them. Hopefully like you say the legworks been done already on the 1/200 and the time to get to 1/350 will be drastically reduced, hopefully that will make the price point affordable too. I did read on the HMS Hood association that the turrets were poor, had a look and compared myself to reference and I can see what they mean. Was looking at the flyhawk resin upgrades then barrels etc. However after your recommendations have looked at Micromaster for the 15", the HA, Oct pom poms, UP and the vickers comes in about £100 delivered. Plus the WEM at circa £75 then a wooden deck at £35 ish and its £200 plus anyway. So it really is a bit confusing on which way to go. I will hold off for a few months, any info your friend wants to put out though would be awesome 🤣 I couldn't agree more on using the 3d printed items is the best way to go, its supposed to be fun making the ships. I've had to make 18, 40mm bofors for the prinz eugen and I have to do the flakvierlings yet. Its been satisfying to see them come together, I'm not the best in the world at PE, however the amount of time its taken has been a bind! I'm all for using whatever will make my life a bit easier after all its the painting that makes the difference.
  6. Thanks for the info there. I am getting on with a 1/350 Prinz Eugen at the moment so its not an imminent starter, just have a little bit of spare cash and was going to invest before the house or kids eat it! Very interesting on the Pontos 1/350 set, the coming soon page just goes blank so I cant see any more info. Clearly a man in the know! Any idea on when it would be out? Awesome set I bet but it wont be cheap, which actually once you add everything up, deck, masts, PE, resin pieces it would probably be comparable The micromaster items look very impressive. the vickers and the pom poms would be a definite win from there. So its either wait for the pontos set and likely $200+ mark or WEM, Micromaster route. Decisions, decisions.
  7. Hi all, quick question on this. I can see a few sets online. The Eduard one is a reasonable price. I have a Flyhawk one for another build and that is considerably more expensive. There is also the WEM one too which is similar price to the Flyhawk (doesn't have barrels in though) Guess my question is, is the Eduard set a decent set or is it worth going the extra mile for the Flyhawk / WEM one? I do understand this is a little bit of a preference one however if the level of detail isn't good in the Eduard set id rather spend a bit more Thanks Dave
  8. Hey all, just thought I would post an update in case it helps. MK.1 have released an upgrade pack for the Scharnhorst. http://ka-models.co.kr/?product=1-200-dkm-battleship-scharnhorst-dx-pack-for-trumpeter I have got myself one on backorder from Hannants, tis not cheap however if you are going to do one of the 1/200 then its not an inexpensive undertaking. I'll post a bit of a review when i get it. I'm not a rivet counter really, if it looks up to scratch (it does) then ill be happy. Thank goodness it has resin aa guns, I have started the Prinz Eugen in 1/350 and am doing the 40mm bofors photo etch pieces. They are very nice but time consuming! 18 to do, taking me a while it must be said.
  9. thanks for the responses everyone, looks like i am painting them myself! I would rather test my painting skills than experience the frustration of shoehorning in a deck that isnt right. thanks all
  10. Hi all, I've managed to pick up a trumpeter 1/350 tirpitz for an absolute bargain price. Looking for a wooden deck for it, the only one I can find is the following https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334229571783?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=8_zEQFW1Qf2&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=V8ASCgOuQSy&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY The pattern is erm not the best at all. Now I'm not the most experienced ship modeller, I see a lot of decks suitable for tamiya, revell, academy etc. What's the consensus on using one of these, my heart hopes yes. My head is saying definitely no 😁 Thanks
  11. Hi all, managed to get the scharnhorst for a really good price, excited to do it, have a few projects to finish first. 1/16 rc King tiger and a warm up with the prinz eugen 1/350 Emailed WEM and they have no plans for pe for the kit however some of the bismarck set can be reused, hatches, Arado set and Portholes. So that's a win. This chap has some excellent looking resin parts, the aa armament is really what I am interested in. Have ordered from him before and was good stuff https://distefano3dprint.com/collections/1-200-scale Wooden deck found one on ebay, cy20013 have a look for that, 75 quid and includes metal barrels. Looking at the kit it seems pretty good anyway, etch is decent, nice mouldings and the above will lift it to a really good level I think, or good enough for my skills anyway!! Deans marine do an rc conversion kit for the bismarck which once again I'm sure can be reappointed to the scharnhorst. Very tempting and I think I'll have a go. Just finishing up a type 45 destroyer then onto the next projects, really enjoyed the ships again, that and armour will be my thing I think. Hope the above helps Cheers Dave
