  1. That's great info thank you. I am painting with Enamels. For no other reason than I was using them when I modelled as a kid 40 ish years ago. In the end I opted for the Revell 350 (called Lufthansa or Silky Blue depending where you look). I can get this relatively easily and locally. And according to the 'Ultimate Model Paint Conversion Chart' it is FS15042. Thanks again it's been a good learning curve!!!
  2. Thank you both for the quick replies. That's great thank you I'll check the website out. Thank you. The box says it's an F4U-5. The instructions in the box don't offer an alternative using the Mr Color / Hobby aqueous. I'll have a read of the thread
  3. Noob here. I am building a Hobby Boss 1/48 F4 Corsair and the main colour is Mr Hobby / Mr Color C365 'Gloss Sea Blue'. I have researched this paint and found out it's 1) lacquer and 2) not the best for brush application. I've scoured the model colour conversion websites but nowhere is suggesting a different colour. So I think I'm asking can I use this stuff with a brush, or can someone recommend a close alternative colour? Thanks in advance.
  4. Just wanted to jump in here and say nice job. I've recently completed this kit with my 10 yr old son. It was his first ever build and my first for many many years, We even chose the same decals / paint as you (son wanted the Jolly Rogers look). I think you've done a great job. The airbrush has retained the detail on the kit. The decals have bedded in over the details. I like the weathering you have done (funnily enough for our second build we'll be adding a little gunsmoke / exhaust dirt etc). I like the metal aerials. Can I ask what did you use for the antenna line - that's the one bit I haven't done yet... EZ line or stretched sprue or something else? Thanks for sharing!
  5. Watching the Corsair with interest. Mind if I ask what navy / sea blue paint you used?
  6. That is great information much appreciated. In that case I'll keep the struts / bays and inner doors all sea blue as in the guide. Yes the photos I was looking at were all restored models. So not a great reference. That said. Maybe I'll let my son decide...
  7. OK. So after my son's first build (and mine for many years) we took on the main event. A Hobby Boss 1:48 F4U-5 Corsair. Undeterred by the fact I had read somewhere the wings are historically inaccurate (too much canvas on the wings for this version?) we are going to crack on and make this OOB. Our main aims are: 1) Have a good time 2) Do a better job than last time 3) Experiment with exhaust and gun smoke, and try a little 'preshade' on the panel lines. 4) Not fall out about whether the undercarriage will be down or up (easier to display down, young boys want planes to FLY ) Yesterday we made a little start, painting some components on the sprue, the first two stages in the instructions are the cockpit and and engine assemblies. What I found interesting in this set compared to the Revell 1:72 is the detail in the painting (and the cockpit) seems a lot less. I'm glad we did the 1:72 as I took some of the detail / colours in the cockpit from that one. First win - thinned the paints a lot better this time. 4 coats and no detail lost, and just looking a lot better. First near win / miss. I was feeling really chuffed to find the thread in the tips about how to do perfect straight tyre lines by dripping a bit of thinner followed by the paint. Nice job. Reread the instructions and realised I should have painted the wheel first. Ah well at least I know the tip works 🤣 Next steps... Apply a decal to the forward instrument panel (the part had a spot of gloss varnish applied today). Decide if we're brave enough to maybe apply a little painted detail to the two consoles either side of the pilot and think about the cockpit assembly. First decision to be made... In the painting guide for this one if the undercarriage is down the 'struts' ((?) you know the bit the wheels connect to) are navy / sea blue. All the pictures I've seen they are white. Obvs hypothetical at this point as it won't matter if the undercarriage is up Thanks for reading this essay.
  8. Thank you to all the kind words and encouragement. I will show my son this thread. We have started the 1:48 Hobby Boss Corsair and putting some of the things we learnt already into practice. Maybe I'll start a WIP... 🤔
  9. Just a quick comment from a noob to say this is absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing.
  10. OK, our first RFI. Go easy. I introduced myself in the introductions section I won't bother repeating what I said there. My son and I are 'plane mad'. Been to numerous airshows and museums. My son (10 yrs old) has a soft spot for Corsairs. One of the reasons is 'Skipper' from the Pixar movie 'Planes'. Anyway his grandparents bought him a model Corsair for his birthday. Turns out they actually bought him two. Initially they bought him this 1:72 model, decided it was too small and gave him a 1:48 Hobby Boss instead. I found out about the 1:72 and asked for that. Deciding it would be a good 'practice run' before going for the 1:48 (in retrospect maybe the 1:72 would have been less fiddly 🤣). I haven't built a model since I was my son's age. I was self taught. I wanted to try and do things properly with this model and teach him. So we actually painted components before assembly 👍. Took our time. Watched a lot of resources on Youtube. Didn't find this forum until we'd nearly finished. This kit is straight OOB. This is nowhere near the standard of some of the fantastic work on this forum. It's also my son's model - I didn't want to take over. Just help when help is needed. We've well and truly been bitten by the bug again and hope to build many more - with my son and also maybe a little occasional project of my own. This really is to record the beginnings and hopefully some progress as we learn and improve. There's a lot of bits we are pleased with, and a heck of a lot of room for improvement. Which we will take on for our 1:48 Corsair project. This little Corsair has not left my son's side since the last coat dried!!! What we learnt... 1) It should be fun 2) Thin paints and lots of coats (we didn't thin these anywhere near enough) 3) Don’t rush
  11. I'm not that far away. I grew up in Weymouth. Now live just outside Puddletown.
  12. Thank you - to a fellow Dorset person I see!
  13. That was me too!!! About 6 years ago my mum moved house / downsized (she actually moved house the same week as me but that's another story...). I found all my models in a box in the loft as I was helping her sort everything out. Some were a bit beaten up and broken. I chucked them. 😢 Looking at a few of the threads on here I guess I could have rescued a lot of them.
  14. Thank you. Just taken a look at some of your work. Stunning!
  15. Thank you. Things have moved on since I was wrestling with a small metal 'toothpaste' tube of cement. Sharpened matchstick to apply? Pah faff for an 11yr old!!! I have this Revell stuff with a little thin metal tube applicator. What a revelation!!! I may share some pics of the 1:72 that's nearly finished.
  16. Bom dia. Another new member here. My eyes 😮 aghast wow look at your 'model making man cave' and that stash...
  17. Thank you Dennis that is very much appreciated. About to embark on the Hobby Boss 1:48 F4U-5 today wish us luck!
  18. Thank you for the warm welcome. Just found myself eyeing up a little 1:72 Tomcat that has a similar decal set to the one I remember making as a kid. And working out which extra colours I need. Oops. Canopy frames? I thought the fogging you get from using model cement on the canopy was all you needed 🤣
  19. Hi, Freester here. I'm from the UK. As a kid (40ish years ago) I made a few aircraft models. Self taught. The first few I didn't even paint just glued together. I remember my first it was a 1:72 Hurricane (Matchbox kit maybe?) and I even managed to glue to the prop so it didn't spin. I persevered and was brush painting a few models by the end although I was always trying to rush them and I don't ever remember painting any parts before assembly 🤣 I seem to remember a 1:48 Lancaster and an F-14 Tomcat being some of my 'prides'. Freester Jr is 'plane mad'. Has a real thing about the F4 Corsair (probably something to do with the Pixar 'Planes' Movie). His grandparents gave him a Hobby Boss 1:48 F4 Corsair for his birthday. Turns out they also bought him a Revell 1:72 Corsair but realised that was quite small so got him the 1:48 instead. I wanted to try and teach him some good habits, like painting parts before assembly. Being patient. Allowing things to dry before moving on to the next step! The 1:72 Corsair was our 'practice / warm up' project and is nearly finished. In some ways I'm kind of pleased with it, but looking at some of the amazing work on this forum I realise we've got a way to go! Also - for his models I don't want to take over - they are his projects but with help from me... A few finishing touches and I'll post it for inspection. Go easy! We're just eyeing up the 1:48 F4 now with a view to making a start. I've well and truly been bitten by the bug again. Soaking up as many ideas and tips from this forum, Youtube, etc etc. I think I'll get a model or two as a project for myself. Try and get the detail right and experiment with some weathering maybe. Anyway. Apologies for the essay. No doubt I'll be hassling and asking a lot of questions.
