When I hung up the ball and chain, I was just over 2 years from retirement age. Have a look at the DWP site, you can claim Pension Credit from 30 months prior to getting the State Pension, as they realise employers don't really want someone short term when they get older. Just make sure you go through the motions and not just quit, or you won't qualify.

Retirement, or semi-retirement can take a little adjustment. Firstly, you don't have to rush anymore! Takes a while to get used to not being first away from the lights because the boss wants you in early. Let the van driver go first, he has a job to do. I also built up my stash when I was working, thinking I wouldn't be able to afford kits. Guess what - kits went up in price and I still buy them. I did rationalise the stash when I discovered how fast time goes. Working, caring for others, and fitting in your own life can be a challenge, I'm glad my employers saw fit to let me go 2 years earlier, I haven't looked back, and life is at my pace. It's a great feeling handing in those keys.

I have footage somewhere of our Jaguar tied down on engine reheat runs. Even though relatively underpowered, we only ever run one engine at a time in reheat. It's interesting to see the grass blown flat for a considerable distance, if the back end is pointed over the vegetation. Even at the runway's edge, we get shot blasted on a fast taxi run, as the blacktop has not been properly swept in a while.
