Why did 1/48 scale never take off for armor?
Bertie McBoatface replied to Phantome's topic in Armour Chat
It took off in aviation but tanks? Tanks don’t take off, they just trundle along. -
Why did 1/48 scale never take off for armor?
Bertie McBoatface replied to Phantome's topic in Armour Chat
Fascinating, @Troy Smith, thanks. And please accept my apologies for not reading your earlier post, part of which I reiterated unknowingly. -
I'm knocking off for the night after I post this but I wanted to show you that interior with some paint and decals on. That'll do. It's more interesting than this anyway. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And finally, when looking for placards for the cockpit I spotted this. It’s an aircraft decal sheet but I don’t know which one. To even read it I had to take a photo and enlarge it. Clearly the decal designer didn't expect it to be visible to the naked eye. "Hail the speaker. Hail to who knows." What the heck was he referencing? G'night all.

True. Now you mention it, I could use the floats to make some sort of WHIF world speed record powerboat. That would be very 1930s…

Now what would @Enzo the Magnificent have you do? Now there's a coincidence, I'm currently trying to find a way to live comfortably in a small flat with a 1/72 Flower Class Corvette from Matchbox via eBay. I'm considering moving the kit into the flat and living in the box it came in. -
Thanks. There is a working Morse key in the back but you need a working receiver to perceive it. 🤣

Thanks. I keep all the interesting little pieces for things like this but don't bother with the leftover bigger bits. I used to but I just never used them.

Remember, it's only necessary to do this sort of thing if you want to.

Why did 1/48 scale never take off for armor?
Bertie McBoatface replied to Phantome's topic in Armour Chat
I once read that way back when, it was Tamiya that 'invented' 1/35 scale as a standard for armour models. Previously there was a lot 1/32 and box scale stuff as well as those strange figure modeller's and train enthusiast's scales that I don't really understand. If Tamiya led the way in the sixties, perhaps they will do it for 1/48 if only we can all live long enough. 😆 -
I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed improvising an impression of a cockpit. I used to do this all the time, sometimes from a reference photo and sometimes just from imagination. It's a bit trickier in 1/72 compared to 1/48, but not that much that I'd call it difficult. Of course, in 1/72 it's more difficult for the viewer to notice the errors. 😄 I used plasticard and the spares bin. The seat came from a 1/72 Shackleton that I bought years ago and never built, eventually stripping it for spares. The control column is a 1/35 hammer with a 1/48 ring-sight on top. I can't identify the other bits and pieces. The throttle quadrant is very overscale but when the seat's in, that won't be obvious. The gunner's seat is offset to port on purpose. 🙂 The big question now would be, "have I the skills to paint this properly?" And also, as my reference pictures are all black and white, what background colour? Some years ago @Junchan provided the answer to the colour question. He was writing about the Mk.2 Shark with the enclosed canopy but I'll assume that the Mk.1 was similar. Thanks Jun.

That canopy would’ve been enough to put me off the build. Well done for doing it so quickly. -

I seem to remember building this kit many years ago. But then I believe I remember many things that didn’t really happen.😄 I like the sound of your planned improvements. Go for it! What kind of file is that ? -

It sounds like the moulds were completely worn out by the time yours was made. Good luck finishing this old crock. 😏 -

Well done. She looks just right 😃 -
After sleeping on it and looking again at the photo that shows the floor, is that a tiny fold down chart table on the port side? I guess that would be useful for the recce/spotting roles. I’ll build one in when I do the smaller bits and pieces on that ‘top shelf’. Incidentally the brackets on the cockpit edges both sides are for the gun support at the rear, and for a bearing compass forward of that. I remember the compass brackets from a 1/48 Tamiya Swordfish After my post last night I did some sub-assembly assembling including the wing halves. I’m now committed to a folded wing model but have not finally decided whether to use the wheels or floats.

Yes, the result surprised me too. It is a very very cool kit. The real surprises were how much I enjoyed building them and how much I like them now. Back in 1937 they had a lot of time and Wadpol. They kept the aeroplanes well polished and tidy.

Same here. Patience is compulsory. I like your crew and their office. It looks like something from a Dan Dare strip. 😄
