A Cooperativa (MPM/Frog) 1/72 Fairey Swordfish
Major Flannel replied to Brigbeale's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
Very well done. I have this same upgraded kit coming up fairly soon so this was very useful as a resource. By the by, the vac blob is for the Mk IV with its enclosed station. Very ugly it is too - not Fairey Gannett ugly but runs that monster close. Best wishes. -
Abandoned during a previous modelling frenzy from 15 years ago, I found this Amodel Sh half completed, but with wheels swapped out for skiis alongside other red waifs and strays, all forgotten. I had a vague memory of building the Sh. The fit was awful. Consider the lovely Heller SAAB 91 - it needs around 3mm square of putty in total under the fuse join: that's it. It is beautifully and flawlessly engineered so imagine just how awful the whole fit was by comparison. Later, the wings had been lost somewhere but I had already detailed the interior panels where they folded back. It had been primed here and there but really, quite an abandoned project together with a 4 seat limousine Po-2 mod in the same shoebox (for the 'more equal' members of soviet society) and here shown. https://ibb.co/RcF9ywz I had this single visual reference at the time to work from as a guide but forgoed the available PE set to tart her up apropos. A lot of that set seems superfluous. https://ibb.co/pn9qjyD There are choices today. Remake the wings using plastic card and ballpoint pen &c. to add 'engraved' detail from the insides (wings to be folded back) or leave her as per the image above, this machine being assembled in a cozy soviet sweatshop but with skiis for no reason at all (a lazy route). Or buy another kit to add the wings, but this seems too expensive a prospect. Amodel's Sh-2 is rare now, the Choroszy kit not cheap for just two wings. I know of nobody prepared to sell those 2 wings from a trashed or abandoned build that are just crying out to be sold, either A Bigger Picture: Many Sh-2s were done over in a pale grey colour, let's call it Ae9 (hexidecimal) for fun, That's the whole scheme. Civil regs a possibility or "Donated by the Landlocked Fishermen's Soviet of Kazan'!" inscription on account of them being landlocked. You know the routine. Exclamation point essential. No weathering as I can't abide this Jallyvo 'extra sausage and sage greasy grey' or 'rotting Orc's spleen vermillion' acrylic and powder fad -- in no rush to model 72nd scale oil and dust (but respect to those who do). Just enamels and oils. Old school, me. I have a 72nd scale old Zvezda soviet revolutionary figure to add into a possible small 'factory' diorama, Foreman Comrade Oleg is apopleptic about the theft of state property! ( the wings ). The NKVD could already be interested in this wrecking counter-revolutionary act of sabotage. Poor Oleg... helplessly caught in an implausible scenario. https://ibb.co/tB8DwKP Nota bene. There are small details which mustn't be forgotten: the generator windmill, a skii for the tailskid, piping away from the S-11 engine, the skii crank added to the dashboard. The little red weathervane at the hull's very fore. The lateen sail... Now they're mentioned here, I can't overlook them. The Polikarpov limo needs work too, clearly, so could be a parallel project? Maybe she'll get the skiis and swap out some wheels to the Sh-2 once more. Her engine is already a beauty. Could be fun either way. Best wishes.

Nieuport - Delage aka NiD. long before Marcel Bloch/Dassault pwned French aviation they made fantastic racers too. Thanks ! : )

Shavrov SH-2 Amphibian
Major Flannel replied to Courageous's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
One aircraft that can utilise that fully photoetched M-11 engine, fin by fin, pushrod by pushrod, that is still available out there, along with the U-2 etc. Take a bow; this is clearly a little jewel. o7 -
Thanks Steve. Yes, Greek and 'Byzantine' "galleys" in about 72nd scale? Ish. Neither interested in the big salvo ship of the line varieties nor modern tubs. A very expensive hobby I might add; I own solely a downmarket sackcloth and a pair of mouse-hide slippers as day-wear. Plastic SPADs are much more affordable although just as rare ; ) The Felixstowe is a real charmer. Good luck with this magical craft !

Well, it seems to me that this project is already becoming "derriere sous boubliere", in that I am disregarding sound Shaolin modeling philosophy and getting fixated on three view plans. I need to pick a plane with some photographic representation and work forwards from there and not backward. A machine gun housing is going to look ugly as original sin from Miliput in this scale, as it is in 1:1, but not obviously made from miliput, although quite a good idea in retrospect. Very waterproof. I seek an unarmed Nieuport Delage XXIX possibly the racer? with the new, reduced span, upper wing and "sculpted" empannage but both wings and empannage will have to be completely re-made as these too are different in the 'V'. Record breaking aviator Joseph Sadi-Lecointe approves of this course of action especially since I built a nice Morane 225 (with external oil cooler! what a champ) recently. C'est vrai. Loop le loop. Lets see our options: This is allegedly an XXIX (numeric) -V (alpha), very nice. Or. Pick a regular military but specific NiD and break out the (terracotta) miliput. Vaccilation and prevarication seems to be the order of the day. Edit: Will you look at this. An art project. Fantastic... >>> https://www.artstation.com/artwork/8aBgG ======== Tidying up parts. Like sanding the contents of a luminous green bag of Doritos. 1 part yet to identify. WEAR A MASK, MY FRIENDS! The upper wing has some fine scale detail for its age. The lower surfaces are more subtle. Note the so-called cockpit. <>5.5mm deep. The real big issue with this kit. Why not make proper fuse halves, my Czech comrades? I have some wheel spokes from Part or Eduard on the way. That'll be nice. Part looks the nicer of the two, but (un)said International hobby website didn't offer Part... parts so Mojehobby.pl again came through with the goods, despite the restrictive postage nowadays. Edit: I learned today the bulk of the wood used in the XXIX was tulipwood, so ordered some 0.6mm tulipwood veneer for the display base and all the D struts. Additionally, the guns do not REQUIRE housings. One hurdle removed. Yay. But that's all for now. Sunday 10th.

Gabriel Stern, master craftsman, Shaolin sander and modeling monk insists we study photographs wherever possible in preference to plans and drawings that may conflict. I present Exhibit A: And Exhibit B: Obvious diffs; round cockpit or more angular SE5-esque version. Empannage half-moon or more sculpted. My NiD has a perfectly circular cockpit and the more sculpted feathers. One other worry is the distinct gun housing area as its a complicated shape which has no parts to make it properly. Miliput to the rescue there I suppose but really, what NiD XXIX are we looking at? Its not the racer as the wings are of equal length (and nicely cast as you will see) with fine detail. I shall retrieve my toasted Windsock 79 and investigate further. o7

Your work looks magnificent; you bring out the best in the beast. There seems to have been a fad or series of directives from various countries to make aircraft +- 25% more peculiar or fanciful, taken to the limit in France during those worrying late thirties. It started with the interwar SPADs, good grief, even the Nieuports had Polikarpov identity crises in the mid thirties (and later a Dewoitine/MiG identity crisis). Take a welcoming seat, Marklo. Obviously not this seat, above which the very first pinhole has revealed itself in the headrest. Stopping now as it is minus two in here. I'm burning Windsock Dafafiles on an open fire just to keep warm. \O

Sap green. Just the colour you're looking for on a green cutting mat. And its CMR0009 actually. The evidence is indisputable. There is another Czechmaster listed on there -- a Junkers J.1 beast, but even for that price and the properly halved fuses it's an ungainly, ugly aircraft. Pass. Three wheels on my wagon... M. Detroyat, here pictured in grey, and in his younger years, informs me that his amputation at the hips is the only real way to fit him into this, the most pressing of problems -- the cockpit is about 6mm deep. Michel Detroyat ponders whether hip amputation or 60 a day is the worse idea. One is just able to observe the lower wing anhedral, about 15 degrees. Next up, a nice soothing bath en isopropyl quelque chose. M. Detroyat pic from micheldetroyat.blogspot.com where there be Caudron racer detail images.

Yea, that Czechmaster Nieuport lurking in the 2nd hand section of an Internatiionally famous web shop you might have noticed recently on site, is now next up on my workbench. It was quite cheap for its venerable age and material used. It is labelled as CMR 0008, and the blurb claimed "these kits were used as currency and were exchanged for western kits"; it is moulded from mid -green resin, about 30 plus parts that seem to be proportionally correct. No obvious breakage or pinholes. The obvious drawback, and a problem, is that the entire fuse is moulded in one piece, Hobby Boss snapkit style, horizontally, along with the tail feathers whereas the fin is seperate to it. So. The cockpit is simply a bottomed out hole that will barely fit a seat of any kind. Hrm. There appear to be four wheels included, including two plain u/c tyres which is a nice touch. No decals or instructions are included but that is dandy as I'm somewhat familiar with M. Delage's finest aircraft. Chunky monkey isn't she? This build is going to be practice run for my O (umlaut) FFAG Typ H "A11" Modelbud kit, as I am very out of practice with resin. I hope to make her into either a French or Spanish NiD, circa 1922 (but it was designed in 1918). Oh and the lower wing section is warped; a hairdryer will nicely sort it. Hope to add some initial images shortly before we set sail. o/

Yes, the W4 is a complete, intricate, flash model with tiny elements of an Albatros. 3mm of flash in my example. However, their other Albatros/O umlaut FFAGs are little gems. Nieuport 24/27 contains a complete Sopwith F.1 sprue, which is nice. Etc. I have a real soft spot for Roden, mainly because of their engine detail. Also, Eduard and Airfix may well make ww1 subjects, but theyre a dying breed of kit in 72nd at least. Grab a Roden or Toko and be happy : )

Greetings to all during these odd times we live in. Took a break from working with wooden boats to make WW1 and Golden Age aircraft in 72nd scale only. Of particular interest: Nieuports up to NiD. 29 and the Moranes, Sopwiths, Dufauxs, Bleriots and the reptilian Antoinette. Hoping to make use of all this wood in some models... Stay safe, wherever you are. H.
