Seafire 1b - wing strengthening strips?
Tony Whittingham replied to Tony Whittingham's topic in Aircraft WWII
Hi all, At the risk of pouring more fuel on the fire than necessary, I looked at a specific batch of Seafire 1b’s: the MB328-375 serials. It was my hope to identify a specific factory, or contract that would consistently have the strengthening strips. In this group I found 3 factories, and 3 contracts associated with them: 10 came from Westland, 16 from Supermarine, and 21 from Castle Bromwich. The ones that came from Castle Bromwich with BL prefixed serials before conversion are the ones I suspect had the strips. Westland ones don’t seem to. TW -
Seafire 1b - wing strengthening strips?
Tony Whittingham replied to Tony Whittingham's topic in Aircraft WWII
Thanks @ClaudioN, I have in mind to build one of the MB batch you quoted above. The presence of the stiffeners is a conundrum for me. My understanding was that the structure over the wheel wells needed reinforcement, ergo the stiffeners. So, my assumption was that once the problem was identified, that all subsequent “B” wing production had the fix, until the “c” wing production commenced. Either that, or there was a mod number for the stiffener, and another for thicker wing skin. Any thoughts? -
Seafire 1b - wing strengthening strips?

Thanks to you all for your responses. @Graham Boak, the images I could find weren’t very large, or very clear. I’m glad to see that the Britmodeller massif concurs!😀 TW -
Hi all, I’m building a 1/32 Seafire 1b based on a Hasegawa Spitfire V kit, and I’ve come across some photos of Seafire 1b’s with what looks like the chord wise strengthening strips over the wheel bays like the Spitfire Vb. Can anyone confirm this? Valiant wings no. 12, page 90 is an example. Thanks, TW

Peddinghaus decals - agents in North America ?
Tony Whittingham replied to Tony Whittingham's topic in Aircraft WWII
Thanks for the fast responses, everyone! I may have to mask and paint my own, even though I have never tried that. TW -
Hi All, Is there an agent for Peddinghaus decals on my side of the pond? Their website is enigmatic, to say the least. TW

I think you’ve got the fabric wing right. I did G-AFKX in 1/24 a few years ago, and your build matches. But, watch out for the wing underside, the cartridge chutes have a different pattern than those on metal wings, and the landing lights are further inboard, IIRC. TW

Standard sizes for RAF crests - Help please!
Tony Whittingham replied to Tony Whittingham's topic in Aircraft Cold War
Thanks, @Paul Lucas! That’s exactly what I needed to know! Cheers, TW -
Hello All , Are there size standards for the application of RAF Squadron crests on the noses of aircraft? Do the crests have to fit into a circle of a specific diameter? I’m looking at large aircraft, like Shackletons or Hastings, for example. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. regards, TW

Aeronavale Lancaster Mk. 7 help needed

Thanks to all for your input! Sea Blue or not Sea Blue? That is the question! Looks like another colour can of worms just opened! TW -
Aeronavale Lancaster Mk. 7 help needed
Tony Whittingham replied to Tony Whittingham's topic in Aircraft Cold War
There is a photo in the Squadron book on Lancasters, showing a glossy finish on an Aeronavale Lancaster. I’m leaning toward the DTD 260 finish in a dark blue, but not greenish as in the case of USN glossy sea blue. From other photos of AU-1, and F4U-7 in French service, the blue seems to be different from the USN colour, especially on aircraft with later markings. Thanks to all for the help! TW -
Aeronavale Lancaster Mk. 7 help needed
Tony Whittingham replied to Tony Whittingham's topic in Aircraft Cold War
Thanks @Troy Smith! I especially like the very weathered upper surfaces of the wings! The photos also show that these aircraft had rear facing cameras, and there’s a tantalizing glimpse of the radar scanner inside the radome. TW -
Hello All, The Aeronavale received 54 Lancs under the Western Union program in the early 1950’s. Apparently they were refurbished to GR. standard, and painted a dark blue colour. As this was very likely applied in England, I assume the colour was a British Standard colour. The French also had a “blue nuit” colour. I suppose that US Navy Gloss Sea Blue was not used in this case. Does anyone have any information, or thoughts on the colour applied to the French Lancasters? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hello @ModelingEdmontonian and @RidgeRunner, I’m away from my references at the moment, but will provide information on the P-51a on the weekend. My subject is a Cavalier refurb in USAF markings in Panama, on delivery to South America. It seems to be overall ADC grey with very thin black leading edges. It has the jump seat behind the pilot. I think it is probably FAB-520 in transit to Bolivia. TW

Hello, @ModelingEdmontonian, I’ve just seen your builds, and I admire your tenacity, and expertise. I do wish to throw another Mustang into the mix, and that would be a P-51a. It was Dominican, if I remember correctly, and was obtained from the U.S. Navy. I think it is mentioned in the Hagedorn book. I also have a question, as I have a partly done 1/24 Mustang I’m building as a Cavalier rebuild. My surmise was that the re-built Mustangs had the wartime radios and underwing identification lights removed and replaced. Do you have any information on this? Good luck, and I cannot wait to see all the builds in the RFI. TW
