  1. The one above I did a clear green over a silver base. I was contemplating trying to mask and spray it on the Phantom, just trying to figure out how to do that
  2. She's a stunner mate! Easy to see that this was a passion project, right down to the super subtle weathering that's characteristic of the well maintained RAAF jets.
  3. Thanks mate. So you tinted the HUD glass, I didn't think of that. I'm trying to figure out how to mask and paint the glass on the HUD projector that sits underneath it like this Hornet one below
  4. @helios16vHor did you go about masking ant painting the HUD projector and tinting the armoured glass section of the canopy?
  5. @helios16vI'm using SMS Hyperchrome Cold Tone (they also do a warm time) over an SMS Jet Black base. It needs to go over a high gloss black base. Also if you're going to run a clear coat over it make sure it's water based as a lacquer based one will reactivate the pigments and loose the shine. https://www.scalemodeller.com.au/products/hyperchrome-cold-tone-30ml https://www.scalemodeller.com.au/products/premium-jet-black-30ml
  6. I've been a bit slack posting my progress for the last few sessions. Front landing lights assembled (still masked) Speed brakes installed Painted up the front gear bay door because that'll be a nightmare to mask the clear piece later. Mottle coat is done with a blend of insignia white and light ghost grey before coming in with the light ghost grey blend coat. Only looking for subtle tonal variation on this build. And now a clear coat and wash for the following. I'm still getting a feel for the washes so I don't have a huge amount of control over the effect just yet.
  7. I had a productive evening in the paint booth. Painted all the Insignia White external parts of the gear bays. I'll hit them with clear goats and washes to make sure I match the finish of the gear bay interiors next session I had to mask the landing lights and paint them "inside out" putting down the layer of SMS Hyperchrome, then the gloss black undercoat, then a layer of primer to give it the same base so the white matches the rest of the landing gear. If I've pulled it off that should replicate the internal reflectors of the lights. Priming everything For the struts and actuators I painted the gloss and masked the chrome struts first, starting with a black base. I did this because they were easier to mask off. Then re-primed over the overspray to give a unified base before coming in with the insignia white. And then hit everything with insignia white. Wile I was at it I also did the cannon and arrestor hook. Beautiful detail for something that's going to be mostly hidden.
  8. That's all the gear bay parts prepped for paint
  9. Some ejector pin clean up needed in the landing gear bay doors. The other two will be hidden by the landing gear but this third one needs to be dealt with
  10. On with the landing gear prep. Some disappointing mould seams needed to be cleaned up on the gear struts.
  11. It's nice to see a Tomcat that hasn't been weathered to death.
  12. The front landing gear struts needed some delicate fiddly mould line and ejector pin removal. Lovely detail on the nose wheel steering mechanism.
  13. I vaguely remember reading they redesigned the tail based on customer feedback. They may produce revised fuselages for short nose versions now that Tamiya have entered the ring.
  14. Some long overdue progress. All that's needed here is some parts clean up. For the last tail pieces there are multiple variant parts depending on the angle you want your stabalators posed at, make sure you get a matched pair. The stabalators are a very tight fit in the tail pieces so you may want to bevel the edges.
  15. Should make for nice subtle contrast. The JASDF panels are very well cared for so your shortish should provide a more realistic representation. The only part that really shows any serious wear is the face of the cannon shroud.
  16. Wing shape is correct and symmetric without any surgery
  17. A thin sanding sponge is required to clean up the gates on the inside of the leading edge flaps
  18. Wing tips are a little fiddley. Parts need to be carefully taped in place to ensure correct alignment when cementing
  19. Tail pipe seals, flap[s and ailerons are precise fits that need attention to detail when cleaning up the parts. Make sure you check the manual and cut off the correct tabs for whatever option you want with your control surfaces.
  20. Get yourself some of this SMS HyperChrome for the pitot tubes and landing gear. Spray over a high gloss base like SMS Jet Black https://www.scalemodeller.com.au/products/hyperchrome-cold-tone-30ml https://www.scalemodeller.com.au/products/premium-jet-black-30ml
  21. Glad it's not just me. Does it seem like an instagram in the manual to you that they list it after it tells you to glue the intakes on?
  22. Ok I've just missed something that's mostly my fault for not reading the manual properly but it could have been presented a little better. This is something to be wary of for anyone building the kit The manual goes through assembly of the intake including cementing positions, then it sais "by the way, there should be a decal INSIDE each of those intakes I told you to cement into place during the last couple steps". This is probably still fixable, just something that's going to be much more fiddley and may not even be that visible under normal lighting conditions. There should be a decal inside each air intake here. I'm not sure how visible it will be under normal circumstances without a torch or camera flash.
