I finished the projects I had in progress.
...And I found two more, which I had completely forgotten about!

That last shot is really nice showing them off together, your builds have all turned out very, very nicely indeed - the B-17s in particular are truly stunning.

But, probably a silly question, the two more you talk about above, more B-17s perchance? 😂

I'm off to gawp at these in the gallery.

  2. Not much of an update this evening, but since I've been a bit awol recently. The leg wash scraping/ Q-tip destruction continues (the legs on the outside are awaiting their turn):

And, before Christmas, I ordered in name plaques (couldn't decide which one to go with):

Shiny. More scrubbing before bed, but that's all for this evening from the blizzardy plains of Hoth.

Ps. I forgot to note that in my aforemented act of accidental destruction, not only did I ping off and lose the pitot cone, but one of the M.52's wings also came off - cleanly, fortunately - but just means there is more tidying to do before it can be painted.

  3. Hi Steve,

Now that is a particularly gorgeous build you've got yourself there. I don't know where to start in commending it,  it's just outright gorgeous. I'm not even that interested in bikes, but holy cow, I've just spent a good while zooming every which way into the photos.

She (it, he? What gender is a bike?) just looks real. Perhaps even a little too real..? I mean, c'mon man, clearly, clearly it's an actual bike and an oversized piece of paper in the background!? Or a very minimalist (and tidy) white garage?

    David

Ps. You know you've smashed it when you need a coin in shot not to demonstrate size, but to prove it's not the real thing...😂

Your immoderate use of cotton swabs is quite successful in your work.

Why thank you, it's a combination of having left the wash on too long and really needing to scrub it off, combined with the world's cheapest swabs - they just disintegrate!

More scrubbing tonight, before a few final sessions to finally finish what was meant to be a Christmas present :yahoo:

  5. Well, surprise surprise, I didn't quite finish doing the kitchen, but I made a promise. And I'm a sucker for being called handsome, so, to the lounge!

I began with small steps to reinvigorate this thread. The AT-AT still requires its weathering to be tidied up. Cue water and cotton swabs. Lots of cotton swabs:

    20230115_231651.jpg?psid=1

Probably cant see that well, so close-ups. AT-AT port side is looking good for its general grimy layer (the neck needs another go, the starboard side is purposefully not shown - still needs tidying):

    20230115_231713.jpg?psid=1

The legs, the one on the right is closer to the finish line:

    20230115_231739.jpg?psid=1

And the AT-ST and snowspeeder up close too:

    20230115_231749.jpg?psid=1

On all will be added some brown and red stains to add some flavour to otherwise grey models. I'm not worried about being over the top here or particularly careful. The originals look a mess, and whilst they are huge and it's for film, these will be getting a 'snow wash' and then dusted in snow. Perhaps that may happen to concentrate where I am unhappy with the weathering. In either case, I'm minded to go ott (and slapdashedly) on weathering so it can actually be seen. Still need to do highlights after these steps (although I've found I can do edge highlights by merely rubbing off the layer of grime a bit firmer than in other areas).

This and the M.52 will be this week's tasks. Hopefully I can finish them, and then its Bissy for the remainder.

Well, a similar message anyway, even if not expressed in those exact words. 😁 Sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations model-wise over the festive season. Seems like you had Riders on the Storm going. Hopefully you'll Break On Through to more productive modelling sessions soon. 😫 Urk, I'll get my coat. Regards, Jeff.

Thanks Jeff, I struggled last year with progressing builds and my enthusiasm did just get sapped by the calamities above -  I felt like a real ship of fools. To the point where I thought it was the end, well at least felt like it was five to one at some points, but hopefully my new setup will light my fire again after having been down so long!

    Coat returned,

    Hello Admiral,

Are the strikes still going on at the dockyard? Or are you lost in the snowy deserts of Hoth?:D

    Regards,

    Eric-Snafu35

Cheeky so and so. You forgot terrible weather grounding the plane! Well, I guess an explanation is in order...10mins after my last post above (18.12.22 - a year ago now!), the airbrush compressor packed up, bringing the Hoth and M.52 builds, and my mojo, to a grinding halt.

Christmas, ofc, meant that space was a little lacking, what with Santa being such a generous chap and all (and my little one preferring the boxes to the toys they came in), so bits had to be packed away. However, now the new and improved compressor has arrived. Boy is it a night and day improvement (Sparmax TC-610H QuantumOrange compressor)!

"So, my good and most generous lord, where are the photos, oh handsome one?" I hear you all say... Well, last week I conspired to drop the M.52 front cone part thing onto its nose, the pitot tube/cone flying off through the open back door, onto the patio and rolling inbetween the wooden boards never to be seen again. Trying to catch it, I knocked the upper wraparound segment of the Hoth diorama onto the floor and crumbled it underneath my floundering feet. I subsequently fixed it and applied a base coat, but it is no longer rectangular in shape (one side is shorter than the other, so I didn't fix it well...) - all in all, it no longer fits. It will be in the bin by day's end after a rethink of constructing the base and that I never want to see it again.

So, a pretty anticlimatic and expensive conclusion to 2022 modelling and a slightly shambolic start to 2023 to boot. Nevertheless, the day is young, and once the kitchen is tidied to the mojo-inducing refrains of The Door's LA Woman; I am hopeful to have an update with photos real soon.

I'm definitily too lazy for multiple shades like you do 🥱

All done one after the other to help blend it in, no airbrush cleaning inbetween! Emphasis on 'blast' it on. I haven't mastered the technique yet by any means.

IMHO, as white is used on spacecraft for heat reflection, wouldn't a pure white with pre-shading of some panels be a better option? (I don't build "rockets")

Quite true, although one of them is going to be a night light in a toddler's room, launching from the pad (light in the exhaust). Well that's the plan, but it can be slightly toy like as it'll have a limited life. The other one, I will need to consider a bit more, I have hundreds of photos of a couple of them. But you can see from the link below, it ranges from a brilliant white to a, er, 'poo' brown and everywhere inbetween (even on the launchpad):

Sorry for tangent, but -in short -  I'm a fan of your underbelly 'white'. (And have a real dislike of white-white in general, it seems).

I'd appreciate to know your opinion about "my" insignia white before I apply a last light finishing coat (I find it still somewhat too greyish).

Probably too late now, but given this part of the plane will naturally be somewhat shaded, it looks to me to be an ideal mix.

Thank you for the link above, my own two cents is that anytime white is called for, I blast it with at least 5 different shades (from brilliant to a light grey, sometimes misting over with the actual colour to blend) - really, to help draw out contouring, or trying to get light effects, but also so there isn't just one petulent white blob offending my lordly gaze.

Ps. I have the Airfix Saturn V and two space shuttles in the pile...send me any leftover whites please.:please:

    there isn't any cockpit detail.

Ah ha! The last photo in the post above seemed to show some rather convincing cockpit detail when zoomed in, but...

I guess it's just a decal? Looked very convincing to my Mk.i peepers, especially when a bit further away.

I either case, that seat is quite exquisitely painted, and that superchrome...well,🤤

    David

  11. Looking very good Bill, it is indeed colourful for a WW1 specimen, and makes this venerable old kit look rather tempting! A shame to move it to the back row though, especially with those unusual decals. I've just had a thought - could you paint the gap between the torn roundel to hide that jagged edge? It might distort the shape a tad (although we could blame that as some poor soul's first day on (painting) maintenance)...

Otherwise, if you hadn't mentioned it above I would have assumed it was a trick of shadow from the ribbed wing. Also a thank you, as I'll be buying that smoke nylon wire for my own builds.

  12. Show me that shine!

    20221218_015920.jpg?psid=1

That's almost done. I sanded back again as I was unhappy with brushing it on and did it properly, difference is night and day and it'll be mirror-like soon and ready to attach later this week.

Later today the priming will be complete on the M.52 and Hoth diorama, photos to follow.

  13. Minor update this evening, been too busy to make much progress, but I wasn't happy with the Hoth base. So, to anyone interested, here's how easy it is to make a snow base. First the powder:

    20221217_002036.jpg?psid=1

    Then the adhesive:

    20221217_002210.jpg?psid=1

    Mix:

    20221217_002330.jpg?psid=1

Apply (my phone died on me after the above photo so you can't see it being applied - but it was slathered), and then the next day:

    20221217_133406.jpg?psid=1

Voila, much better. It's slightly transparent so you can see through it slightly...to the white snow underneath. One week to complete this now, so will concentrate on this until then, but can combine with priming the M.52.

The hull changes on the Bissy have hardened (ages ago I might add):

    20221215_155235.jpg?psid=1

But still needs much more work to get it accurate, in fact I've hacked at this now and need to extend the skegs (to the left in the photo above, they also need severe reshaping), whilst I've removed a lot of the added resin on the left-hand side as it originally appeared relatively ok (and I was finding it hard to marry it up on each side). Bodes well for the skegs :like:

To make some progress, bits of photo etch have also been built up. Part of that are the boats, but I needed to make some 'adjustments' to them first (in the below, the starting position of each of the 4 types is on the right):

    20221216_173508.jpg?psid=1

These have been tidied up even more now, before dry-fitting the pe to ensure all fits well. Hopefully I can complete some sub-assemblies alongside he other two.

  14. A good choice eater of MiGs! In an effort to expand my scope of modelling I've added a Jagdpanther to my wishlist (I couldn't select a Panther as I wanted a King Tiger, and ofc balanced out the destroyer and heavy tank with a medium, Pz Kpfw IV). Sorry, in short, I will be following this build intently.

    David

Ps. Work progress photos, esp of the redone welding, would be greatly appreciated (as your builds at the top look sublime)! 🥺
