  1. A bit more progress . . . Finland has her skis! These are the Kora resin parts and they work quite nicely. I have the prop, pitot tube, and aerial mast on now, too. I have the canopy and windscreen painted, so now it's just a matter of doing some clear coat work before I can wrap her up.
  2. Finland (Arma Mk I) has her markings up top now. Just roundels (from Arma) in six places and serials (from Kora) are all the decals I'm using.
  3. she's emerged: Fuselage went together nicely, but the wing-fuselage join not so much. Tolerances are tight and I must have messed up the starboard wing just slightly such that it required some relatively aggressive sanding to get a fit. Still, now that she's together I'm pretty happy with the look. Thanks re: the cockpit. In this case I intend to have the canopy and door open so actually quite a bit will be visible inside. This was probably the most time I ever spent on a single seat cockpit, actually 😎
  4. I'd like to know, too. Probably I need to do more research. Wasn't even familiar with term "wing fences," so maybe now I have the search words I need! I got the cannons mounted and she's ready for primer.
  5. Finland's upper camo is mostly complete, and I splashed a layer of Pledge over top. I also installed the exhaust stacks. I do think I need a camo touch-up here or there, but close to getting the upper markings on.
  6. I'm building a 1/72 P-51D and thought the comparison in size was interesting. Somehow the 1/144 looks smaller than just 1/2 the size of the 1/72, at least I think so...
  7. Wow, that's great, Dazz! nicely done. I am especially impressed with the Swiss version as I find that scheme intimidating (but hope to give it a shot at some point)! Thanks for sharing these. Good luck with our attempts at stocking up when you're in Japan next (will be interested to hear how it goes)! I've never had the pleasure of visiting a Japanese model shop but I imagine they could be quite something!
  8. I managed to get the cannon fairings drilled out to insert the resin cannons. Worked well(ish).
  9. Not sure what those PE pieces on the wing are for, but I got them attached now. I thought they would be more difficult to attach than they ended up being, so that was nice. I also got the little bulge on underneath the back half of the fuselage. I assume that's a radio pod of some sort. I also had to drill a hole in the wing for the pitot tube. I'm not quite sure what to do about the guns--there are a couple of resin bits that need to be attached to the cannon stubs. The instructions want you to drill holes, but I'm finding that very difficult. This is definitely not a basic kit!
  10. Alright, the fuselage welded together just fine, and the wings are on, too. Kudos to Airfix for the design in terms of how well and easily the wings attach.
  11. To be honest, I'm not enjoying this build so far as much as I would have expected. Too many fiddly bits, and that's even without bothering with much of the PE. I think Eduard is brilliant in terms of attempting to design this for potential to be so many variants, but it seems to have detracted from building pleasure (or mine, anyway). I have the cockpit mostly together after quite a bit of work. I will have the canopy open so I put marginally more effort in than I may have otherwise, but I know many other modelers have built this up much more beautifully than I have!
  12. LOL at Airfix because this particular kit's molding is bad news. Nothing is a show stopper but the front half of the spinner is garbage (I have a Tamiya spare which will be just fine), and the fuselage halves are badly bent. I am sure some cement is all that will be needed to bring the halves together, but this is obnoxiously bad: Meanwhile the spar fore of the rear wheel opening is missing completely on one of the fuselage halves. Again, I think that is fixable, but more evidence of unimpressive quality control...
  13. I've built a few Sweet Hurricanes and a Sweet Bf109 in addition to the previous P-51, and they are absolute joys to play work with. I've heard that their decals were subpar at some point, but they seem to have figured that issue out, and they've all been lovely, in my experience. This the sheet in this kit: The P-51 sprue includes drop tank options, which I won't be using, so I trimmed up the sprue to exclude the parts I don't need before I gave it a bath. Five minutes later: I'm joking, it took more than five minutes, but assembly is very quick and super pleasurable. They are really well designed kits. You can see a gap between wing and fuselage, but everywhere else the fit is perfect. I'll clean that gap up and spray primer next.
  14. Too modest. No, do you? Also, did you confirm the prop? Aztec says Aeroproducts in which case I'll need to locate one...
  15. Thanks, David. I don't think I would build another one of these, but I really enjoyed it, especially since it's interesting to see where the hobby was 50+ years ago. And I agree, it builds up better than I expected--and look what @Troy Smith was able to do!
  16. Oh I saw them! I love them all--the Bolivians, the Guatemalans, the Haitan, the Indonesian! They're all gorgeous. Sadly my Mustangs don't end up looking as lovely a yours!
  17. This was fun! My first Frog build ever! A Hawker Hurricane, dressed up as Karel Kuttelwascher's JX-E, based on an Arma profile and decals. Arma also donated the fuel tanks and spinner, and AZ generously contributed the main wheels and canopy.
  18. I'll call her done now! This was fun. Thanks for a great GB everyone!
  19. technically, yes. they do seem similar to the colours I used for this Guatemalan pony that I built previously though. My fidelity to specific colours is suspect anyway, so we'll see what I end up doing. you bet tri-colour camo and a shark mouth! 😁
  20. A little bit ago I purchased a large collection of small boxes. This STGB will be a great opportunity to put together a 1/144 P-51 (or two!). I built a Sweet one back in December as part of the blitz build. She's one of my better looking attempts at 1/144, if I do say so myself. I think I'll start with the other half of that box (each box comes with two kits) and build the box art version with captured Japanese markings. Its profile is the top left one:
