  1. Finished it, but donā€™t look to close ! Quite happy with it seeing as the last time I built a model , was a Dogfight Double about 55 years ago ! Got the registration from Xtradecal so I could model my dadā€™s aircraft V8-L from 570 Sqdn. Rivenhall. I think I need to ā€˜dirty it upā€™ a little, any suggestions? Thanks for all your help chaps
  2. OK chaps, in my original post I was thinking of giving up and buying a new Italeri Stirling. Thankfully I decided to persevere and itā€™s now 95% complete. It wouldnā€™t win any prizes at a modelling competition but Iā€™m happy enough with it . Having got so far I donā€™t want to cock it up at this stage, so a last couple of questions. 1. Do I apply the lacquer/varnish before or after the decals. 2. Any recommendations for lacquer/varnish? Itā€™ll have to be applied with a brush. PS do the red spinners look naff !
  3. Yes, I was brush painting with Tamaya acrylics but I've got some Humbrol paints now.
  4. Thanks for all the replies chaps, some great advice there. I think I'm going to try and rescue the situation first before I start again with a new model. I'm keen to do the Mk lV Stirling because it's what my dad used to fly with 570 Sqdn at Rivenhall.
  5. Thanks for the reply. Iā€™ve been using the Tamaya glue which comes with a brush similar size to a nail brush. I was thinking of getting the Revell Contacta professional glue instead. Do you think it would be better to assemble the whole wing, undercarriage etc, paint that and then attach to the fuselage , because the Stirling paint line between black and camo goes midway between the centre line and top of the wing making it tricky to mask off.
  6. I started an Italeri Mk lV Stirling about a month ago and I'm afraid I'm going to have to give up on it. These are some of my mistakes ; paint where it shouldn't have been so some components haven't stuck properly so a window has fallen out from inside the fuselage and something else has come loose so it's rattling about inside, one of the tail wheels has come out. Didn't read the instructions properly so the engines and nacelles haven't been assembled correctly. I decided to glue the bomb bay doors closed and it looks terrible. Some of the paint I used was enamel and some acrylic. They reacted with each other.....that's when I gave up on it. But I'm not going to be defeated so I'm going to buy another one and try and get it right this time. 1. Can anybody recommend a 'beginners' paint spray kit, not too expensive because I'm sure this would give a better finish than brushes. 2. Is it best to paint upper and lower wing surfaces and fuselage sides separately first, before assembly ? 3. The glue I got from the model shop was in a container much like the mrs's nail varnish, so the brush splashed far too much glue around. I need to find a better way of applying the glue. Thanks
  7. Hi there Im building this model and as a newbie Iā€™m finding it a bit of a struggle. Iā€™ve painted the top sides but Iā€™m disappointed with the colours Iā€™ve used and I might have to redo it.....nightmare! The model shop sold me Tamiya XF 52 Flat Earth and XF 81 Dark Green and have to say it looks crap ! I havenā€™t got a sprayer so Iā€™m using brushes. What colours were used on your Stirling because they look great ? Thanks
  8. Thanks for all the replies chaps, I think Iā€™ll want a matt varnish to put on first before Astonish. last question! Whatā€™s a good matt varnish?
  9. Do you put Astonish on after everything is finished, ie decals and do you put it on the cockpit canopy, windows etc?
  10. Thanks for your replies everyone. One last question, whatā€™s the best finish to use and can it go over the decals ?
  11. Thanks for the replies chaps. Iā€™ve got some Tamiya rubber black, might give that a try. Going to try and get like a 570 Sqdn Rivenhall Stirling. Managed to get some decals to match my dadā€™s aircraft V8-L cheers
  12. https://flic.kr/p/2ks5DXe Iā€™m using lockdown to get into modelling again and I think Iā€™ve bitten off more than I can chew ! Aliteri 1/72 Stirling Mk lV, my dad used to fly them and Iā€™m building one to show the grandkids. Im using Tamiya flat black for underneath and fuselage with a brush and itā€™s gone very patchy. Iā€™ve thinned the paint on several layers but it still looks crap. Do you think Iā€™d be better with a spray can ?
