[Bandai 1/72 A-Wing WIP]

UPDATE: Life stuff got in the way and held up my build, but it's back on the bench with some progress.

 

After stripping the Tamiya color coat, I decided to try the Vallejo Model Air line, with White Gray and Yellow being the primary colors. The engine cans were finished off in silver with a gold band, and everything sealed with a couple of coats of Future clear acrylic prior to weathering with Abteilung oils (Starship Filth & Rust Brown); the sooty smudges are airbrushed Tamiya flat black. I was planning to light the cockpit instrumentation but due to the tight, interlocking nature of Bandai's snap-together parts, routing the fiber optics from the light source was more than I wanted to deal with so I just left the engine wiring intact. Next time, maybe...? 🙂

 

Once the canopy masking is removed, cannon installed and the ship flat-coated, all that remains is to paint the base, then she's done!

Regult Scout Pod from the Macross anime series (Robotech in the US). Sprues are still bagged. I've always wanted one of these; price was a little high off of Ebay, but you only live once!

[Bandai 1/72 A-Wing WIP]

I'm not really satisfied with my choice of colors on the tail & engines. So I've decided to strip it down to the primer. How, you ask? Well, seeing as how I'm using Tamiya acrylics, I'm going to use a household product that works quite well.

Yep, you heard me right. A few hours' soak in the stuff and parts come out ready for a respray (I'm using Stynlrez).

[Bandai 1/72 A-Wing WIP]

Working on another A-Wing, this time in 1/72 scale. I decided to light the engines from the start; I also wanted to illuminate some cockpit gauges but it's tricky getting those fiber optics to bend in the tight confines of the space between the cockpit tub and the fuselage interior. I'll also need to figure out a way to block the light from the SMD LED that will sit beneath the pilot's feet (I may have to amputate his legs). This ship will be given another non-canon paint job, I just haven't decided what colors or pattern yet.

[tips on nozzle size?]

I have found that my Harder & Steenbeck Infinity with a 4.0 nozzle great for priming when using Badger's Stynylrez (which is my general go-to these days). I set my compressor at 25psi for this medium. For spraying Tamiya acrylics that are thinned with their X-20, a switch to a 2.0 nozzle and needle set is fine for all of the models I've so far shot. Works great for pre-shading too. I have yet to try the H&S .15mm setup. I've read that this needle size is quite fragile.

Thought I'd post up a couple of my most recent builds (both Bandai). The first one is the 1/144 A-Wing set, while the second is the 1/100000 Super Star Destroyer. Both went together so easily it was almost like cheating; I swear if you shake the box well enough the kits assemble themselves! Both builds were primed with white Stynylrez and finished off with shades of Tamiya flat acrylics. I decided to paint the A-Wings in a non-canon color, just because. 😁

From sunny (and currently cold) California. I'm one of the new/old modelers, been in the hobby since I was a teenager (I could be considered an old-schooler now!) and have gotten back into it in recent years. Began with air and space subjects (Airfix, Monogram, Tamiya & Hasagawa kits) and this carried over to sci-fi with a rare anime-based kit thrown in the mix. Lately I've been spoiled by Bandai's Star Wars offerings! I look forward to participating and sharing ideas, and also being inspired by the awesome builds I've seen here, and I'm currently fine-tuning my new-to-me airbrushing skills.
