  1. Thanks for the link Tankerman and Grant. A really helpful site that. I hadn't even thought about tapering the planks and the drawing in my plans gives no indication. Learning all the time. Steve
  2. Hi Maurice. I found that build log thanks. There's lots of tips and advice which will save me making mistakes. I also noticed the build took 5/6 months. Not short term projects these ships are they? I'm posting in WIP now. Steve
  3. Finally started the planking, more difficult than I anticipated. Pinning the planks without splitting them is one thing I'm struggling with. I'm finding lots of occasions where a little bit of sanding or filing before you glue would make life easier. All part of the learning process. Steve
  4. Started the build today. After spending quite some time sanding and filing, which I find very therapeutic, did a dry fit on the bulwarks. Left them fairly tight. Is that the best way to do it? Got a replacement for the piece of timber that was missing, from the model shop I bought the kit from, so no worries there. I'm taking loads of pictures, just struggling to upload them. Need to do some homework on that. Ah, got it. Steve
  5. Hi, bought my first ever wooden ship kit yesterday, the H M Convulsion by Jotika. Hopefully to display in my caravan window if we're ever allowed back! First job was to check all the parts and I'm missing a piece of 3x4mm walnut. Does this happen much with these kits? I don't know how I'd get this delivered so I may have to source it elsewhere. On checking the wooden parts I found the plywood parts aren't cut very cleanly and will need a lot of sanding. Again, I don't know if this is normal or not. I'm happy with the small parts and amazed how many there are! The actual instructions seem a bit sparse but you get 7 huge plan sheets that look quite detailed. Hopefully I'll be starting the build very soon. Steve
  6. Hi everyone, thanks for the welcoming words and advice. I've decided to go with the Jotika H M Convulsion, mainly because I can get it from my local model shop and I think supporting these businesses is important at this time. I hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew! Time will tell. I'll hopefully start a build log soon.
  7. Hi everyone, Steve here. Absolute beginner when it comes to modelling. Do a bit of woodwork for fun but I really want to make a model ship to put in my caravan window! I'm torn between the Occre Albatross or HMS President. Which would you guys recommend for a first time project? And I will be picking your brains at every step. Looking forward to getting to know you all.
