  1. John,

The Lightning is an F2.A and the only complete one in this country, she is painted incorrectly but in otherwise very good condition, would be nice to see how she is doing lately if you could bag some snaps of her please.

    Regards,

    JB.

    Hi JB

No problem - happy to oblige

I did recall there was something odd about her - like the GR3 Harrier which isn't (I thinK?) I'll find out at the weekend !

I recall she is under cover and doing well - sadly I thought the Vulcan was looking very tired last time I saw her and she needs to be under cover soonest.

    regards

    John

John, I have to admit that I don't know how to send a PM...or at least, I can't see anything obvious that indicates 'click here' to do so!

Would it be possible to get a good look at the Meteor's landing light attachment on the nosewheel leg...snowy conditions permitting, of course?

If it's any consolation to you, it reached 42 degrees here yesterday...and our summer has only just begun!

Best wishes for the new year,

    Tim.

  2. Hi

I am going to get to (eventually and snow permitting) East Fortune Museum this coming weekend - it seems to be open. I will be taking the camera to peer into some Bucc wheel wells and intakes, wing fold etc for a fellow BM'er. Anyone want some pics of their other exhibits while I am there?

    Bucc

    Pink Jaguar

    Sea Venom

    Sea Hawk

    Ferranti Meteor test bed

    Lightning (F3 ?? I think?)

    Me 163

    Concorde

    Polish Mig 15

Harrier GR3 (I recall some doubts about history of this airframe)

    Tiger and Puss Moths

    DH Dragon

    SA Pioneer twin pin

    Tornado

    Canberra cockpit

Beaufighter cockpit and bits under restoration along with a Blenheim/Bollingbroke in same condition

Vulcan - outside and under 3 feet of snow at the minute

Thats from memory. I can't see an exhibit list on their web site which is a poor show but then again maybe old age just has me missing it

Send me a pm and am happy to help out

regards and best wishes for 2010

    John

  3. Thanks for the kind offer John.

Should you have time, I would appreciate some pictures of the Sea Venom and the Bucc please.

Particularly interested in the top surface of the intakes and the open area of the wing fold mechanism of the Bucc. Unfortunately both aresas are on the top surfaces if you can get to them.

    Thanks in advance.

Appologies to Wienne for this bit of thread hijacking.

    Chris.

    Hi Chris

Happy to oblige. I think I will be able to get there some time next week. I have not learned how to post pics on line in a photo site yet but can send them to you as an e-mail attachment if you pm your e-mail addy to me.

They have been moving things around a bit if I recall but the Sea Venom had/had a cockpit viewing platform so you can get pics from above as it were. Not so with the Bucc but I'll take the aluminium steps and ask if they will let me take pics from them - no doubt Health and safety wil have kittens !

The Buccs wings are folded so it should be possible to get some close shots of that.

You interested in the pink Jag as well?

    JohnT

  4. Dear Wienne

have a look at the pics here.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/emdjt42/4063305673/

and at the East Fortune Air Museum web site. They have a FAW22 example

I plan a visit over the Christmas holidays and will be taking pics of a Buccaneer wheel bay for another Britmodeller. Anything that you would like pics of?

    regards

    JohnT

PS to Britmodellers generally take this as an open invite if you want detail pics of their other exhibits and I'll do my best to help out

  5. 111 SQuadron Meteor T7 - the Hall Park book on the Meteor has a profile of a WA612/S in Squadron colours. Overall aluminium, the profile shows no T-bands. A small photo appears in 'Meteor' by Steve Bond

    Brilliant

    thanks Dave

off to find a copy !

    John :D

  6. Classic Airframes made a very good kit of the Meteor T7, NF11 and 13 variants. Not sure how readily available they are, it might be worth it putting the feelers out here?

    Just a thought.

    Tony :clif:

    Hi Tony

    and thanks :speak_cool:

have just done that and posted a feeler to see if anyone wants rid of a Meteor T7 in 1/48. I think they are out of stock most places.

Might have to be an evil bay job

Have been assisted today by JohnM with a trade fro a two seat Hunter conversion and donor kit - thanks John - much appreciated.

  7. No, this one is a black cover A4 softback sold at the airshow (along with a similar one for 43 Squadron). Air Britain's Squadrons of the RAF is usually the best source for non-standard aircraft

That sounds very useful. Any help/info much appreciated

    John

  8. I've got a small history of 111 Squadron (Published for their 75th Anniversary), I'll have a look, but I don't recall it having pics of the secondary aircraft.

    Hi Dave

I think thats the book I was working from. "Adstantes" is the title - small yellow cover paperbcak? There is no pics inside that but useful type ref in the appendix with serial numbers etc. Thats how I found out about the 2 seaters - just when I thought I was almost home and dry !

You keep learning in this hobby thats for sure !!

    John

  9. Hi

as you may have noticed I am trying to do all the types of 111 Sqn service in 1/48.

One type fails me - the Vickers FB19. There isn't and almost certainly won't be a model produced so if I want one in 1/48 to complete the line up I'll need to go scratchbuilding. Problem is where do you start as a total novice used to injection and the odd vac form?

Can anyone suggest a book or whatever as a "Scratchbuilding for Dummies" style introduction?

Meantime I am going to trawl through this forum and try and stay optimistic !!

    thanks

    John

  10. Hi guys

I am trying to set up a project so I can build a 1/48 scale model of each type used by 111.

I was chuffed to get all I need to start all the front line types with the exception of the Vickers FB19 - yes I had never heard of it either - as no such model exists.

Anyway, I am reading through the book on the squadron history when I discover that they used several types for hacks, training, communications etc

So I have sourced a Magister, and a 2 seat Vampire trainer but looking for a two seat meteor and hunter conversion.

Meantime does anyone have any idea where I might get some pics of these types in service with 111? I can get the operational types a plenty but not the hacks?

    Thanks for any help

    regards

    John

  11. Blimey!

Just as a general point, are we talking here about shelves full of built models, or unbuilt stashes? or even both? I'd see my stash in a different light if I'd already built them all - I'd never try to claim if they went up in smoke, because of the incalculable value of the work I'd put in (and not being able to contemplate doing it all over again ...)

I'd guess unbuilt more valuable as more capable of re-sale though know what you mean

  12. JohnT - what would count as a "collection"? Surely it can't simply be a number of broadly similar items accumulated over time? Is intention at all relevant?

Thats the problem. Each insurer may take a differing view. I suspect that any group of models would be regarded in the same way as a set of expensive prints, stamps or whatever. If the insurer has not been told and has not cleared it then most likely they will only pay out a restricted amount if anything at all. I have dealt with cases where they just voided the policy - everything - and handed back the premiums paid. Not a single client has sued as the insurer would have fought it all the way and the clients can't afford to take cases through the courts and on to appeals. The insurers have deeper pockets

Insurance law reverses to normal duties of disclosure. The doctrine is called "ultimate good faith". In other words the applicant for insurance has to tell the insurer everything that might affect the insurers risk and their decision as to whether to insure and on what terms. If they don't the insurer can bump them.

The problem from the insurers perspective is that each item by itself will fall under the individual items limit so as long as you lose one or two its not a problem. Once the insured puts in a claim saying that he has lost say 160 models in a fire and together they would be worth say, £30-40 each with after market stuff to replace etc (and this assumes a "new for old" policy) you now have a claim for what? £6,400 ?

Most policies will have a clause limiting claims to £2,000 or £2,500 for any one item and a "collection" will normally be rolled into one item. The policy will vary from insurer to insurer. But here is the rub. If there is a claim and if there is a loop hole the insurer will bump you.

When you are applying for insurance they need your business and most times they won't bother at all. If they do ask for a bigger premium its like to be buttons - or another insurer won't ask just to get the new business. So act before you need to claim as they need you more than you need them. Once you are a claim they don't want you any more and its cheaper to give you your money back than a cheque for what? £25,000 plus to replace furnishings and your models after a fire? The moral is ask now and get proof they approved it so if you have to claim they are stuffed. Or you might be instead !

If anyone has any particular issues drop me a pm and I'll answer as best I can.

    John

  13. Fantastic

Just enjoy and send to a hot underground location with anyone who dares criticise what you do with your time and money

    BUT

I JUST HAD A HORRIBLE THOUGHT

    SERIOUSLY

When I bought a large number of signed and valuable aviation prints and a couple of originals I had to declare them as a potential "collection" and have values done for house insurance otherwise in the event of a loss by fire, theft whatever I would not be covered.

So PLEASE - all of you who have a valuable stash, check your house contents insurance and, if in doubt send details to the insurer IN WRITING and get a reply IN WRITING. If they telephone to say its ok ask either for a letter or send them a letter recording the terms of the call. Otherwise the conversation never happened - trust me on that !

Although the kits will be under the limit watch the small print in case the Insurer says that as a collection they value over limit and therefor void the policy. Possibly the whole policy !!

I have had clients with losses issues over the years so watch the sods. They will bin the whole policy cover and hand you a cheque back for the premiums if they can get away with it - and usually they can because of the oddities of insurance law which is different from the normal legal position

sorry to go on but something for everyone to think over and maybe check out?

    regards

    John

PS Mods - worth warning members more generally? a thought

  14. I can't really see how it would have saved 'umpteen lives.

Dispensing with the turrets for a mere 50mph speed increase would have left it still well below a nightfighters top speed and totally undefended at the enemies mercy

    IMHO

I think the rationale is that if the bomber is even just a little faster it can route away from known fighter bases and even though the fighter is still faster still it has to travel some way to catch the bomber. If the speed differential between them is not that great then there is a chance the fighter will never make up the distance.

Cold War spy overflights to the USSR were planned on that basis I think?

Was that not one of the reasons the Canberra, Buccaneer, TSR2 and V Bombers never had any defensive arms and just relied on electronics?

The trouble with the plan is that if the fighter jocks get a new bird thats a quantum leap then it rather leaves the scheme exposed and vulnerable and it was not introduced widely in WW2 because of the concerns re rapid development of aircraft and the worry that the germans would and could develope a fighter that was much faster thereby leaving the bombers totally defenceless when interception takes place.

  15. Col, Christian, Andy, Den and Nigel

  16. Hi guys

    looking to pick brains please

Due to circumstances I have not been able to find build time for many years but that is slowly changing. I have bought over 200 models meantime in the stash which are carefully stored in my integral garage on some good quality shelving. The garage has always been dry -since built 20 plus years. But in the last week or two I have felt it a little damp and noticed that some paper work nearer the door being - well limp !

Decided to move the decals out all the boxes - includes after market decals bought to use instead of kit ones.

Any do's and don't re storage methods?

I'd thought of buying a good quality ring binder - lever ach thingy and 200 plus plastic sheets to slip each sheet into.

Should I move the instruction sheets too?

    Any horror stories to avoid?

    Any advice much appreciated

(Yes Yes - I know "Get on and start building !!") ;)

    thanks

    John

  17. Wasn't there one Washington with black undersides? I'm sure I have a profile of one in an old SAM somewhere.

    David

At least a few I think David

the Air Britain Washington file has photos of

WF497 of 15 Sqn code LS A serial white on black

WF498 Code LS B same scheme

the rule seems to be that if the aircraft had been painted black underneath that the way it came

There's a good photo of "Forever Amblin" nose art. The aircrat is WF503 of 90 Sqn 13 Dec 1951. Nosewheel door overall red. The 3 panels over which the US had painted the aircraft name have been "scrubbed" to remove it but "Forev -and the first "half" of the next "E" is clearly still visible. The next panel was scrubbed clean and the third shows "LING" stained onto the metal.

A good pic of the first Washington delivery with WF437 still sporting USAF serial codes 469680 landing with one prop (inner stabd) feathered and oil streaming everywhere from under the cowling

  18. Malaya and Barham :wow::partytime::partytime::clap2:

    ditto ditto

Can any maritime specialist say if they are easily backdated to their Jutland config? My grandfather was a boy sailor on Malaya at Jutland and would like to do one for obvious reasons. he didn't get killed only because an officer told him to leave his post and run a message to another part of the ship. When he got back she had a direct hit in his area and his mates were simply gone. :poppy:

There was doubt after he died whether he was on Barham at Jutland. He served on both but from what have read Malaya took some big hits so I am guessing it was her thta he was on at Jutland.

  19. Hi

I have the same plan in mind and have an Air Britain Monograph publication which covers the aircraft in RAF service in great detail and loads of pics. You might still get a set of decals in 1/48 K4/19 Kits at War which might still be available.

Send me a pm if you want any info or maybe copies of specifics.

Actually thats an open invite chaps as long as we don't infringe copyright and its just for personal research purposes

  20. On Defence-Aerospace.com there was a short reply from the MOD in response to the Weekends articles in the Press, the MOD spokesperson saying whilst its true some serious reappraisal of the defence spending is required as a result of the current economic situation and the continuing need to support our forces in Afghanistan, the Minister remains 100% behine the Aircraft Carriers program.

The Webeditor added a personal note to the post to highlight that whilst they had reassured the carrier build, they made no comment at all with regard to the JSF program!!!!!!

Isn't that what the Football Club Chairman says about the Manager the day before he gets sacked?
