  1. Spectacularly boring picture, but at least it proves the glacial progress continues Primer by jongwinnett, on Flickr
  2. Thanks guys. I must admit to one canopy related faux pas, in that I tried to emulate Tempestwulf's suggestion of trimming the rear of the canopy to enable it to fit better. It's a superb suggestion, but in an overly gung ho fashion I took a saw to the canopy. This shortened it by far too much, and I had to sand and polish the off cut to fit back into the resultant hole. I won't know what this repair looks like until the masking comes off. Haven't addressed the bubbling yet. I suspect a fibreglass pencil will allow me to cut it back, and then a brush full or two of Tamiya or Revell should sort it out.
  3. As the phrase goes, I love it when a plan comes together. Primer by jongwinnett, on Flickr Still not very good at canopy masking, have never tried a pre-cut set, are they worth it?
  4. Nearly there for the build by jongwinnett, on Flickr Doesn't look so bad, plastic gun barrels and all. Big glue splodge on the side of the cowl, carelessness on my part but no doubt it will polish out. Some Vallejo putty arrived. So far I'm impressed, easy to apply and clean back with water and a cotton bud.
  5. Well that didn't go so well. It's difficult if not impossible to cut such thin tubes without crimping the ends, and my efforts to reopen them didn't work. So in a burst of sense, I have decided to leave well alone, since this is supposed to be a quick build!
  6. Am I alone in now having visions of PC's liberator as a big soppy dog looking pleased with itself and wanting it's tummy rubbed...
  7. The plan is to mask and fit the canopy, mask the undersides and prime the upper surfaces tonight, if time permits. I'm going to test out some Revell acrylic approximations of the RAF colours on the AVG Hawk, and if they work, will use them for this build.
  8. Managed to get to the shop at lunchtime so now have some 0.6mm OD tube which should be a sliding fit over the 0.4 tube I already had, this should enable me to show the distinctive shape of the wing guns, and possibly also the nose guns? I know, I know, each time it's a step away from OOB but it's all good fun. I also picked up some Revell Acrylic paint to try for the dark green, I had been unhappy with the Humbrol I had already, and the Xtracrylic and Tamiya had worked ok, but it seemed like time to give Revell a try, especially as there have been several builds on here recently which showed them off very effectively. Some heavy weathering or fading might be in order for an AVG bird anyway, so I can modify the base colours if I'm unhappy. If they are good, then I can see me using them for the upper surfaces of K9955.
  9. As you can see in the picture above, I had begun gluing the cowling from the cockpit forwards. It didn't sit quite straight in relation to the fuselage, and despite clamping over night is still fractionally off line, although any error is so small as to be virtually undetectable - filling will disguise what gaps remain. Had this been anything other than a quickie I might be frustrated by this, but I suspect it's another case where I can see the error now, but on the finished model it will be hopefully invisible.
  10. Thanks guys. The pub was excellent, several happy hours with friends, all our kids enjoying themselves together and the adults just kicking back and relaxing. Not sure what it was inspirational for, but it for sure was good for the soul.
  11. Now that's snow. Most of us Brits can only dream* of that. Hope you and Mrs P are both well, I suspect your evident skills have saved the canopy anyway, so look forward to the rest of the build. *nightmare for some.
  12. I was looking at one of these in my LHS yesterday. Might get one as a counterpoint to the Airfix E-4's in the stash, another candidate for the BOB group build. Looking forward to see how this turns out.
  13. Dry run by jongwinnett, on Flickr Couldn't resist bringing the parts together. I want to replace the gun muzzles with tube, but the 0.4 od tube I have seem too thin, so I might need to get something slightly more substantial.
  14. Difficult to resist when such promising base kits are available so widely. I know I said it was to be an OOB build, but the hydraulic lever annoyed me, so it was replaced with a Peco track pin, turned down to reduce the head size a little: Replacement hydraulic lever by jongwinnett, on Flickr This was added to the pit along with Eduard super fabric USAAF belts: The office by jongwinnett, on Flickr Eduard super fabric belts by jongwinnett, on Flickr I managed to get the control column off the sprue, only to break it cleaning up the seam line. Guesstimated a replacement from brass rod with the grip build up from PVA: Replacement control column by jongwinnett, on Flickr Then I closed up the fuselage and went to the pub! 15. Yes, the Humbrol has probably been on there for two years, the build has been stalled at least that long. I'll fix it.
  16. Terrible picture, but the sidewalls got a gentle drybrush with Tamiya flat aluminium (as used for the seat) and a matt black wash. This will be enough I think. Untitled by jongwinnett, on Flickr I need to add belts or a driver, I've read various comments, is the consensus (if one exists) that these got full US style harnesses, rather than either lap belts only or Sutton harnesses, both of which I've seen mentioned?
  17. Revell acrylic made short work of the interior, I know it looks rough but will be largely invisible and a flat coat will cover a multitude of sins: Sidewalls by jongwinnett, on Flickr Untitled by jongwinnett, on Flickr
  18. Sorry for being late. I'm building the Airfix AVG Hawk pretty much OOB, this is light relief from my Spitfire which is a slow process. And 'cos I like the Flying Tiger scheme. Airfix AVG Hawk by jongwinnett, on Flickr Untitled by jongwinnett, on Flickr
  19. Realise I am late on parade, but does anyone object if I join in? Nothing fancy, an Airfix AVG build pretty much OOB, but I kept seeing completed builds and thinking I fancy one of those. Not my usual sphere so expect mistakes a plenty!
  20. All in all, the black white demarcation went much, much better than I hoped or expected. Yes, the Tamiya paint has reacted with whatever paint (possibly Humbrol enamel) I had used in the wheel wells when the build was originally started, but I'm sure I can clean that up. Untitled by jongwinnett, on Flickr
  21. Yes, it does look like they were related to hiding exhaust glare. Today's progress however was confined to the under side: Tamiya NATO Black by jongwinnett, on Flickr Ready to unwrap by jongwinnett, on Flickr Some reaction with previous paint by jongwinnett, on Flickr Edited, as ever, due to stupid autocorrect.
  22. Much happier with the appearance now: Much better by jongwinnett, on Flickr
  23. It's certainly a possibility. I know it's lazy, but I'm insufficiently curious about them to pursue much research, they're on the airframe I'm building so that's good enough. And happily, I haven't seen any on BOB period fighters, so this may be the first and last time I do them!
