Whilst he is of the Aussie Pugwash Flying Circus variety, I'm sure the sizes for both the RAAF and the RAN are the same so @NAVY870 is your man, he has the real thing to play with so if all else fails he can actually measure them...
-
They're different airframes, that would be like saying a Mirage GB should be an STGB, but a Mirage IIIC is nothing like a Mirage F.1 and the only similarity between a Mirage 5 and a Mirage 2000 is the delta wing layout. Absolutely agree with you there!
-
George, It will help if you can get Frank's service number, ask him, it'll be so ingrained that it will trip off of his tongue, its something you never forget.
-
I had a similar problem (3 arrived at once), yet in spite of having several decal sheets for the type, I couldn't decide upon a subject, in the end I'm cobbling together something from the kit and two different aftermarket sheets (one of which is actually for a Hunter)! Good luck with whichever scheme you choose, it is a lovely kit but check those canopies for blemishes.
-
Which is OK if the undercarriage is nice and sturdy... ...trust me on this. George, Nice start on that cockpit, the SH kit is well detailed in that area.

It does hurt my eyes to look at it. To be fair Dennis, I have accumulated that lot over a number of years, some have been birthday and Christmas presents.
-
They're definitely not fictional, there's plenty of photos of Adl'A Mirages toting them. From the sprue shots those are coming although in which kit I don't know (probably a IIIE/5). Nice rendition of the Airfix kit.
-
As promised some photos. First off, the kit box top... ...exciting eh? Here's the sprues... ...and hopefully, from this, you can see the fineness of the panel lines in this kit Finally, some references and the decals. As huge a fan as I am of the Mirage, I could never afford the DTU books when they were available and I missed out on the EM37 book of the Mirage IIIC Anyway, the Duke Hawkins and Aviascope books between them have lots of detail so I should be OK. Right, I'm off to the basement to start work.

As promised here's some pictures... ...first the kit and the Xtradecal sheet I'll be using for the dayglo bits (X72115), my phone camera makes the dayglo look yellowish but I can confirm the decals themselves are very similar to the dayglo tape we used on tool shadow boards when I was in the mob so that's good enough for me. Then there's the references, I did mention I'm a bit of a Meteor fanboy didn't I? I'm off to the basement now to make a start.

Great choice Dave, thanks for signing up. Always room for more, anyone else up for this?

I enlisted the help of the Wonderful Mrs Wez to choose the scheme, I showed her lots of pictures of the options to which she chose "The silver one with the red markings!" From this I was able to narrow it down to the EC2/5 Île de France option on Berna Decal sheet BD72-110. The option is No.19, 5-OI while based at Orange-Caritat in 1973. Here's a link to the scheme. Just got to pull my finger out and make a start now!

Wrong Mirage fan Patrice, I'm Wez not Enzo Don't worry, I will build both an NMF and a blue scheme, I just don't know which to do first!

This thread has been moved from the Aircraft WiP forum because, well, I hadn't got very far with it! Many thanks to @Enzo the Magnificent for moving it! I've just received the new Special Hobby 1/72nd scale kit of the Mirage IIICJ, what a delightful little kit it is too! The surface detail is very fine, SH have really upped their game with this one. I've waited for this kit for a long time, I know the Modelsvit kit is out there but I find the divots used to represent rivets a distraction, rivets never leave a hole like that and the Mirage III is mostly flush rivetted. The kit comes with plenty of armament options that would cover most users IIIC's and I have plenty of decals to cover Armée de l'Air aircraft so my subject will be an Adl'A jet. This will be a very slow build, I've already committed myself to the Meteor STGB and I'll be building this kit in parallel. The biggest decision I've got to make with this kit is whether to go for an NMF jet or one in the Blue scheme. Pictures to follow.

As far back as I can remember, I've always been a fan of the Meteor, especially the F.8, so I'm really, really pleased that Airfix have blessed us 1/72nd scale modellers with a fine kit of the type (canopy blemishes aside). The Meteor wore some of the most colourful and attractive schemes, indeed its service life in RAF service saw it go from camouflage, to silver back to camouflage colour schemes... ...and then there's the target towing and target facilities aircraft. These were aircraft used to simulate targets for fighter units to hone their skills, the F(TT).8's being used to tow banners. I really like the schemes these latter aircraft appeared in, especially if they wore squadron markings, the 85 and 79 Sqn markings being quite attractive. For a long time the wallpaper on my computer was an 85 Sqn jet with in LAG with full sqn markings - a really attractive aircraft. Unfortunately for me, this particular aircraft has a very small sqn markings repeated on the forward fuselage so until somebody does those in decal form that particular subject is out. As a placeholder, my intended subject is this 79 Sqn F(TT)8 from the early 1970's I'll be using the Airfix kit with decals brought together from a number sources. EDIT: I've just followed the link and it takes you to the page the photo is on, the current subject is this one it's in LAG with Dayglo. Obligatory photos of the kit to follow.

NATO 75 Years GB: 4 April 2024 to 28 July 2024.
Wez replied to vppelt68's topic in Future Group Builds
I definitely did NATO deployments in non NATO areas so I would expect those to be included. -
I want to build many IIIE especially an EC2/4 "Lafayette" nuke alert jet, a 5F, a 5BA in the early and late schemes, some more Adl'A IIIC/E and... ... just so many! You're right, they're a licence to print money!

Whilst not Dave I checked all three of those I received today, the score is 2x later canopy with dimples in the transparency but no flaws on the earlier canopies; 1x both later and earlier canopies with flaws. This is disappointing, I shall be onto Airfix for replacements. Other than that, I'm really pleased with the kit, the surface detail is on a par with the SH Mirage IIIC I've also just received, well done Airfix!
-
Well, mine arrived today and as @Enzo Matrix predicted, I am a verreee happpeee bunnneee! I'm mightily impressed with this kit, the surface detail is a great improvement on previous Special Hobby kits, also I pleased I don't have to devote any thought on how to fill the divots on the surface. A great kit, I shall be buying many more!

As long as everything is there for me to make an Adl'A Mirage IIIC, I'll be a happy bunny!

P47 Thunderbolt STGB 30 September to 31 December
Wez replied to Marklo's topic in Future Group Builds
Whereabouts in Brittany, I'm looking for recommendations for next year's tour. Pays D'Oc wines, good choice. So as not to hijack @Marklo's thread, I think I'd like to do something Latin American for this GB.
