  1. To roughly summarise, production blocks refer to the incremental changes made to the aircraft across its production life. BuNo in reference to US Navy aircraft is the airframe serial number. So what I’m trying to figure out is if there are any conversion parts for the outside I would need to source / scratch build to turn the model from the aircraft depicted by the kit to the one I was looking to replicate.
  2. OK, so I may have fallen down a rabbit hole trying to figure out the detail differences between the various blocks of F-14 production. Especially since from the looks of things the example I was looking to model (BuNO 161428, as shown on Milspec sheet 72-011) is a post-engine swap Block 120 but the kit I have depicts BuNO 160655, from Block 100. So not sure how much conversion work would be needed or if I just need to drop a set of GE engines in.
  3. OK, so a hike out to an independent model shop on the far side of Coventry gave me an alternative project so I can at least get something done even if I can’t scratch build my way out of the problem with the F-35. Watch this space. #TalkToMeGoose
  4. There’s not a pilot figure in this kit. if you’re on about that locating hole in the middle, that’s there to take the instrument panel. The hole for the stick is obscured by the blob of plastic cement in the right side of the tub because I pinged the part out of my tweezers trying to put it in place.
  5. Problem is I don’t really have another kit I can pinch one from, no.
  6. So I have some bad news. Having finally gotten enough spare time to get started, I made it this far: Then proceeded to lose the joystick in the carpet. 🤬 Trying to decide how to proceed now.
  7. Either way the next step is trawling the literature to figure out the best way to do Have Glass paint.
  8. So an impulse buy at Hobbycraft today landed me with a project for this GB. Still debating which of the decal options to go with (probably not the UK one since not sure how well 617 Squadron qualifies even if they're the bulk of the RN Lightning Force right now).
  9. Fair enough. Was toying with doing a 1/48 but 72 will be healthier for the limited space I have to display in. OK.
  10. Possibly down for this but it feels like finding an F-15 kit right now is like finding hen's teeth.
  11. So the general state of my crafting space resulted in the nosecone getting crushed and split. I'm not sure how easy it will be to repair. May be possible to use the body to push it back into shape with glue in the cracks. UPDATE: OK so I tried that and it didn't work out. I think this project is a write-off.
  12. Applied the blue for the stripe on the thruster block and the black for the nose stripes. Need to acquire some 2mm and 1.5mm masking tape for them for when I come to paint those areas silver.
  13. OK, that's the Olympic Blue applied to the cylinder and wingtips. I need to go and get the thruster block primed so I can add the stripes to it. And then debate the pot of Tamiya XF-56 Metallic Grey I have will work for the silver areas considering I've never tried airbrushing their paints before.
  14. I've also had people who've built the kit say that Ford Olympic Blue is a pretty close match to the filming model. Will need to do some testing. ...I'm going to need a lot of spoons.
  15. OK, so that's Ford Nordic Blue over grey primer. Not totally happy with that shade so need to find something a bit darker.
  16. OK, final update for the time being while I research what paints I think look best. Dry fitting looks good (although alignment on the forward fuselage is a pain - there's only one pin on each side meaning it's possible for the wing gloves to slide). Also leaving the back off the thruster block until the model is finished and I am satisfied it sits on the rear skid properly with just the included counterweight (those white rods in the layout pic).
  17. Fair enough. I think the BMW silver I have downstairs is a bit too light though so will look for something a bit darker. Also have a dry fit. The thruster block is -technically- rotated through 90 degrees because I got confused by the instructions and glued the connector in wrong, but given that as far as I can tell the part isn't handed it doesn't really matter (and if needed I can cut a new registration slot into it).
  18. So an impulse trip to Hobbycraft today lightened my wallet to the tune of £35 and I walked away with this (along with the annoyance that the TB1 and TB2/3 kits aren't in scale with each other unless you pay extra for the kit that has both TB1 and its launch bay in): I am a bit unsure about what paint shades are quote-unquote correct given that the instructions say that their codes are just a suggestion. Mostly because I've got a tin of Ford Nordic Blue in the garage from a costume project that I think would be perfect for those areas. Might also replace the black stripe decals with vinyl tape for the sake of my own sanity.
  19. So the photoetch arrived. ...I am going to need a magnifier, a decent pair of tweezers and a lot of alcohol. This may end badly.
  20. Yeah, the aft funnel is still in pieces and the forward funnel is missing the extra part on the back so it's easier to get in and add the detail parts and paint everything.
  21. At the moment, just the base Eduard pack. Need to go back and get the railings and lifeboat ones later.
  22. OK. Got the deck to stay in place for long enough to get a dry run photo of everything I have done so far.
  23. I do have plans to build the Revell USS Voyager to go somewhere else in the room, at least. Didn't know if there was any kits tied into Uchuu Senkan Yamato. Unless I just need to bury myself in HLJ's model section again looking for something other than Gunpla.
  24. Either that or actually having space for all the planes I still need to or might want to build. 🤔
