  1. Einar Very nice work! I have the Belcher Bits decals too, they provide an excellent opportunity to Canadianize models that are provided in the marking sof other countries. The Greenwood Aviation Museum (Nova Scotia, CA) has recently restored a former American service of this type to RCAF markings identical to yours. Best Wishes George
  2. Nice work Chris. I did this one a few years ago, also as RE*W. I also had an issue with the top wing, I'm still careful not to pick it up by the top wing! Greetings Carl V! I appreciate your High Flight series from the early 1980s, I have all of them. I found them useful for the Goblin and currently for the RCAF Douglas Digby which I'm currently dealing with! I also used your multi part article on RCAF Sqd 1/401 Hurricane articles for two Hurricane models. Decades later, still the definitive work for a number of aircraft in my opinion! Happy new Year! 3. Thank you Jamie I will be printing this out so I can use it for future reference and knowledge. Thanks again George
  4. Thank you Jamie & Dickrd Jamie I have Colourcoats B55 (the greenish shade), is that the one. Darren Scannell wrote at MW that there was an earlier, light grey version of B55, I saw an RN colour chip (not yours) page at Steel Navy and the lighter grey version was not listed there. Dickrd Thanks for your additional information and again for your information provided at MW. I do not think I saw that site provided above so I will spend some time there. Thanks again George
  5. Thank you Jamie No, I do not have CB.3098(R) 1943, I'm not familiar with that those. You did mention a reverse scheme and I did notice that HMS/HMCS Ribble may have had the reverse of Annan based on the photograph in a MacPherson book, particularly the white area midships is in the darker colour. I will check my Canadian references again to see if I have something that looks like the reverse of what I'm looking for. Thanks again George
  6. My next project will be building the WWII Starling 1/350 River Class Frigate model HMS Nadder as HMCS Annan and have questions about the colour scheme used for Annan, there are not very many photographs available for Annan. The best one is produced here (if my OneDrive host works as I have not used it for this before, otherwise see my note below) with some questions about the use of off white and a darker colour, perhaps B55, which was common at the time (1944) and recommended as the darker colour for Nadder, along with off white as the light colour. So my questions are what the pattern would be applicable and what colours if not off white or B55? Any other comments on the photograph would be useful too. As a final option perhaps any pattern and colours used by Annan or any other UK built frigate used by the RCN would be useful, I noticed that there may be one profile in this thread. Also, the pattern depicted in the Annan photograph does not look like any other pattern that I have seen in other reference books Malcolm Wright, Friedman, or in MacPherson’s books. I’m avoiding the extra work of converting a UK built frigate to a Canadian built one, which means there are fewer UK built frigates to choose from that were operated by the RCN 7 vs 60 Canadian built ones. My reference material, beyond the Canadian Internet sources, includes Macpherson’s Frigates of the RCN and hisThe Ships of Canada’s Naval Forces. Thank you George I copied the URL in but I do not think it worked, so . . . . . URL note - my annotated photo is also reproduced here - http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=302211
  7. Thanks Graham There was a logical explanation behind my rather general comment in any case. George
  8. Thanks Dave, I did not know that. I just glanced at my Vincent photos again and noticed that the fin flash evolved from full vert stabilizer covering (as I used), to a smaller one slightly cropped by the leading edge (various variations on this), to a much smaller one that fits well within the vert fin, and then one that has a much narrower white bar. George
  9. Thanks Chris That is one that I used. For me, it certainly clarified the type of fin flash and the lack of the the sky fuselage band. My copy was in Carl Vincent's magazine (High Flight, Sept/Oct 1982, pg.176) that he published for awhile in the early 1980s. He did a history of RCAF sqd 1/401 over a number of issues. I was a subscriber and there was a lot of good Canadian content in them. The Arma kit has a large number of stencils but they have not been evident on the early Hurricanes based on my review of photographs so far. I nay case, they would show up well on the bottom of the silver wing and I should look more carefully on the photographs provided here to see if there are any evidence of them here. Any comments? I added a number to the BoB version so far. Also the tip of the spinner is a different colour, perhaps red, but I do not know where I got that idea, does anybody know? Thanks again George
  10. Thank you JackG for this link Thank you all for this wonderful discussion and for the photos and drawing particularly provided by Chris. I'm clarifying my mind on where I'm taking these two Arma models. I have delayed my decision on the identity on the earliest one until I can go through all the information and photos provided here. I have settled on the identity of the second one, it is Battle of Britain YO-N (V6605) used by RCAF 1 squadron. There is no particular reason for this aircraft except I have some clear photographs of it and the availability of decals in my collection and I trust everything else is consistent with the Arma kit. My reading indicated that RCAF 1 squadron wasn't re-number to 401 until March 1941 and the early Hurricanes would have been gone by then so my earlier plan to do a 401 sqd aircraft was incorrect . I'm new here, and I need to look into how I can insert pictures to this site. Thanks again George
  11. Thank you very much, Chris, for the information and this diagram. I was not familiar with Iliad Decals so I book marked it. I'm sorting through my decals to see what may be suitable. George
  12. Thanks Chris These photos are very useful particularly for the placement and size of the under wing numbers. Some aircraft had the number under both wings but in opposing directions and other aircraft may have the numbers only under one wing or they are not visible for other reasons I'm getting close to the end and trying to decide on the most appropriate aircraft numbers as well as final detailing. Do you know the colour of the forward part of the spinner? I was thinking it was red but I do not know where I got that idea. Also, I lived in Halifax since I left school and while in school I was in Yarmouth with time spent at Acadia U in between. George
  13. Chris I just checked the CWH site and there is a link to the original, the one that you are using. I remember a number of years ago there was an explanation somewhere of Walker's death and that CWH would be hosting it. Here is the current CWH link and explanation. https://www.warplane.com/aircraft/serial-numbers-database.aspx Apparently, it seems, they have made no updates so far based on the 2013 date stamp on the home page. In any case, I'm glad to know that it is still available. George
  14. Thanks Chris Thank you for that link. It has been a while since I visited Walker's page and realized it would be worth a visit for this project I understand that a number of years ago he died and it was taken over by the Canadian War Bird group in Hamilton.. Thank you again. George
  15. Chris, thank you that was quick. I remember seeing your name else where in this topic. That clarifies that, I saw at least one of those photos in Canada's Wings High Flight but did not know if was white, sky, or silver but it certainly was not black! Thank you again. George
  16. Did early RCAF Hurricanes, that is the pre-war ones, have the black and light (silver, sky, or white) on the bottom. I believe that they did but I have not seen any proof of it. If black was used, was the alternate colour silver, sky, or white? I know that black and silver was used on the Grumman Goblins. I’m doing 2 1/72 Arma Hurricanes, one in early colours of RCAF squadron 1 (the subject of my question above) and the second one is going to be done after squadron 1 became 401 in the UK with the YO markings, etc. I would like to maximize the contrast between the two models, hence my interest in the black bottom and related colours. I have gone through most of this section and have found some Canadian content but nothing on this topic. Thank you George
  17. Paint Colours for the Bottom of Early RCAF Hurricanes Did early RCAF Hurricanes, that is the pre-war ones, have the black and light (silver, sky, or white) on the bottom. I believe that they did but I have not seen any proof of it. If black was used, was the alternate colour aluminum (silver), sky, or white? I know that black and silver was used on the RCAF Grumman Goblins.
