Was genuinely thinking "so there's the plane... where's the model then?"
Next level stuff, that.

I haven't been to Newark Air Museum in an age, must get over there. Their shop is great.
I have a Boyes near me and they carry a good range of tools and full range of Humbrol paints. I never seem to be out of the place right now. When it was closed during lockdown I was paying a fortune in postage charges from Humbrol and Hannants online...

My stash runs to maybe 40 or 50 kits, all 1/72, all FAA or can be built as FAA with aftermarket decals and what have you. I accumulated this heap of kits within a very short period of time about 11 years ago, had a decade off, just came back to it (lockdown innit) and my what-next decision making is usually based on whatever I built most recently - I try to do something different to what I've just done. So, just done a Mosquito, now doing a Wessex, next up probably a jet. I'm a bit rigid about the FAA thing and the 1/72 thing and really should build whatever I fancy, however there's a lot of variety within British naval aviation.
My kit acquisition rate is now almost nil, just bought a Corsair for the upcoming Heller Classic GB but that's it. If I'm completely honest my buying and hoarding of kits at that rate was symptomatic of some mental health issues I was having at the time that led to obsessive behaviour patterns(!) I don't feel the need to buy more kits, I've got enough to last me the rest of my days (though I've just found out that I can do a Navy Shackleton... and there's the F-35...

Which decals do you have?
None, yet. I fancied one of those plain all over paint jobs rather than one of those fiendishly tricky camo schemes the Italians seemed to enjoy putting on their planes. I like the look of this one (Casper decals), which was certainly flying during Pedestal, but I need to find out which FAA units it might have come up against.

Nice work. If your chopper goes up in flames, the crew have a fighting chance. If mine does, they're doomed.

I think I'm going to do a double build - Sea Hurricane + SM.79 Sparviero. Maybe some kind of wheels-up diorama (flyorama?) I'm trying to find out if there are any actual historical encounters between specific FAA and RAI units that I could represent with available kits and decals. I still have time...

Looking great. Love the little fire extinguisher! Haven't got my head around how I'm going to do those tiny windscreen wipers yet...

My creations im afraid wouldnt merit inclusion on Modelling sites such as this.I have to handpaint as i have nowhere to use an airbrush in a small flat. Will watch from afar at other nice builds.
Cheers from Richard.
I use hairy sticks too. Nowt wrong with that!

Going to follow with interest. I have some target tug decals for one of my Special Hobby kits in the stash (forget which one, might be a Firefly or a Roc or something) and those yellow/black stripes will take some mad masking skillz.

Nicely done.Ive not made any kits for over 3 years and i have 3 of the Italeri Wessex kits in front of me.Luckily in the past i bought an update kit for one of them and some P.E.I got Modeldecals sets for them and serial numbers and roundels.Im more or less out of the box with most kits and handpaint a lot.I noticed on fleabay that the 48th ones are getting scarce.Might even break open the glue and tools and do a Wessex myself!!!,Stashed away ive got Revell seakings and Sweet ones in 1.44th.Real hoarder i am.
Watching with interest.
Richard.
I'll look out for your build then! I bought a Modeldecal sheet with loads of options only to revert back to the OOB ones for reasons outlined above...

Looking good. Still messing about with the insides of mine. Got some colour on today but forgot to take any pictures.
AW
Normally it's a matter of hours, not days between the fuselage halves going together and the primer going on, but I had that nose to deal with, also I'd drybrushed the mesh bits on the nose and around the rotor in (as it turned out) the wrong shade of green after three runs at it (new technique for me) - only then to have to take it off again and do it in a different green.
It's a nice enough kit in terms of fit and buildability but it's marred by some sloppiness on Italeri's part in the moulding and the instructions. Speaking of which, I'm going to have a go at correcting that wrong-way tail rotor later...

After a week of muckaboutery I've got some primer on ready for some slap. I like this bit when the filler disappears forever.

stash? I've only been back in model building for six week weeks! How the hell have I got a stash already?!
Doesn't take long, I remember when I decided I was into FAA planes I hoovered up every 1/72 kit along that theme I could lay my hands on in a matter of weeks!
Lovely looking plane, enjoying your build. So is Geoff, clearly.

On this, the 80th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Britain, I can't resist sharing this one.
It actually dates from Easter 2010. It was my then 10-year-old son's entry for his school Easter Egg craft competition (which he won). I helped him with some cutting and sticking but otherwise it's his work. (He's a great bearded brute now, not modelling nowadays, too interested in the stuff 20 year lads are interested in...)

I think my tip would be that if the Heller Corsair is a repop of the Airfix one, choose another kit! I’m looking forward to the Heller GB.
I’m doing the Smer one which is a Heller rebox, not the same as the Airfix mould. I did one of those recently and it was a mutt.

Both stencils and national insignia are generally painted at the factory according to the specifications of the customer. For this reason, stencils do or do not cover the national insignia, depending on what the specifications are.
The picture linked here gives a good idea:
http://spitfiresite.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/23-23-7557926480_17cc030455_k.jpg
Stencils and insignia are already in place and so are certain features related to the current scheme of the day (the Sky rear band for example). On the Spitfire it was specifically stated that the walk line should not cross the roundel and it is therefore painted this way. On other aircraft there was no such request and the stencils were painted over the insignias (as in many F-104 schemes for example ).
Keep in mind that the stencils are there to show groundcrew and other personnel specific points and areas that could cause a safety hazard or require access for maintenance purpose. As such they have to be visible, if for some reason an important stencil ends up where the national insignia is, the stencil will take precedence. It is the job of whoever draws the location of national markings to try and have these in areas that do not interfere with the stencils, if this is not possible, the stencils can go over the insignia.
All this is applicable to aircraft painted at the factory. In case of repaints it would depend on who did the repaint and how the official guidelines were followed. This would depend on user and timeframe. Don't always assume that because an aircraft was repainted when in service this was done by some guy with a brush, it may have been true in some cases but very far from the truth in others...
Fascinating, thanks. I used to do more or less exclusively Spitfires and I reckon they all had a walk line across the roundel

Probably not the the right place, but to do with decals. Stencils. Do they go over national insignia or are they covered over when the insignia is painted and not redone? I have done both ways on my aircraft but have never been sure on it. Not so worried on painted aircraft but for P51’s etc in NMF. I am probably opening a can of worms here, like spitfire camo masks!
I've sometimes wondered this. Were national insignia painted on in the factory per the specification of the purchaser, or were they painted on once they were delivered? As suggested by the name, were spare stencils issued with the airframe so the end use could repaint them on if needed? Reason I've pondered it is because more than once I've put a stencil on top of a roundel only to see it silver in an ugly fashion. Maybe a further coat of Klear on the roundel is needed before I put the stencils on...

Wow, that must be a lot of Klear! The one thing I’ve learned with Klear/Future is “leave it alone until it’s dry”...
Yeah, my modelling has been blighted by a chronic lack of patience, but I'm trying.
I'm enjoying your build, I will be doing an FAA Corsair for the upcoming Heller Classic GB so am on the lookout for tips

Well, it’s six now but who’s counting, eh
When you dunk a canopy repeatedly it starts to form white areas In corners where the new Future reacts with the previous not-fully-cured layers. It does clear up but I’m taking that as a sign that it’s had enough dunking!
I've had that on decals when sloshing too much Klear on them. Scared the bejeezus out of me first time it happened but it disappeared overnight.

That front end in the different colour is interesting, is it an aftermarket part? I had glued mine together per the kit when someone pointed out the ski-jump nose (I hadn't even noticed it, but couldn't NOT see it once it was pointed out!) I pulled the nose off and went at it with a dremel and files to shorten it to something more resembling the real thing.

That's too pretty to spoil it by covering it in paint. Just frame the sprues!
