  1. Awesome job. For my money the 892 NAS "Omega" Phantoms were the most beautiful planes ever to grace a carrier deck. I built that same Fujimi kit years ago, sadly lost in action*, but am given to understand that the same moulding is now available in an Italeri box so might revisit. *Pics still exist though! https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/1-72-faa-phantom.24327/
  2. Thanks... I'll put all this somewhere safe. i think I need to get my head down and finish the current nightmare before I even think about any news ones. I was very close to chuck-it-at-the-wall point just now!
  3. Further vexations: I have put the rearmost antenna pylons aft of the tailwheel, whereas they should be forward. Here we go again... Also, Buzby should be tucked further under the nose. I have another decal. Wasn't going to bother fixing it but in for a penny... I can't even blame these ones on Italeri! Edit: it turns out that for the pylons, actually, I can
  4. Sorry, Steve, I seem to have misquoted! @tonyot helped me out on the squadron codes elsewhere so maybe know about the paint too? I saw the thread that went a bit weird just this morning. Didn’t it just?
  5. Got what he deserved. A gentleman would have given his wife the first class seat, right? (The one time I was "upstairs" it was part of economy - can't remember which airline but I was flying to Toronto to visit my then-girlfriend who was studying there. I was fascinated by the drop-in storage compartments between my seat and the window...)
  6. Thanks @Seahawk and @tonyot... the jury is out on the code colour then. I'm not sure I care enough to reject the Xtradecal stickers on the grounds that they might be wrong. I'd managed to turn up all that info on JT601's short life on the 'net but haven't found a picture. I like "didn't do much" = don't have to worry about weathering. I take your point about profiles, Seahawk - there's me sneering at people who get their "facts" from jpgs on facebook, while I readily accept that a crudely rendered aeroplane must have looked just like that when it actually flew! It is an impressive toy that the man has, though...
  7. Beautiful bunch of bent-wing birds! Mind if I pick your brains? I'm planning to have a go at JT601 for the Heller Classic GB, albeit in 1/72. I notice you went for sky on the underside rather than the "ANA 602" grey indicated on the Xtradecal guidance, is that standard temperate sea on the upper surfaces or some kind of American interpretation? I lack expertise in this area... many thanks.
  8. Beautiful job. I love those silver Mustangs, like muscle cars only with wings.
  9. "Aircraft I've flown"... well, that's a pretty cool theme. The number of aircraft I've flown runs to, well, none. I flew in plenty in my export manager days though. I found myself on a 747 a few times, once and once only in the upstairs bit, I was fascinated by the curve of the fuselage... Enjoy the build, will watch with interest!
  10. Can I pick your brains on this? Did all Corsairs use for training purposes carry yellow codes? I'm planning to do this Corsair for the upcoming Heller Classic GB. Here the codes are shown as sky, the Xtradecal sheet has them more like white. The a/c in question, far as I can tell, was based in the US and used for training of FAA pilots before it was ferried over to the UK aboard HMS Ranee. It didn't last long over here before it was relegated to ground instruction and then scrapped. However I've come across several pictures of this American gentleman and his impressive R/C Corsair in an FAA scheme. He has the codes (albeit 12VS, not 12V9) in yellow and that had me a bit puzzled. Which would be correct, do you think? Could it be that the yellow codes were repainted when the a/c was no longer used for training? Thanks, and apologies for hijacking the thread.
  11. I meant of the non-accidental type. Italeri is hell-bent on driving me to it.
  12. I did not know this! I was about to push the button on an Airfix FG.1 but I built the Fujimi version years ago and it was awesome. Thanks.
  13. The other night I was in the kitchen doing a bit of faffy decalling. Bare feet. Unbeknownst to me, my son had dropped a dish earlier that day, and hadn't done a perfect job of sweeping up the bits. I stood on a shard of porcelain that went a full 5mm into the sole of my foot, but just at that moment I couldn't leave the big "ROYAL NAVY" decal. By the time I was happy with it I was standing in a puddle of my own blood. It's a gory business, this modelling malarkey...
  14. I bought one of those magnifying visor thingies recently and it was (literally) a revelation. However my wife openly mocks me whenever I'm wearing it. In fairness, t does have "TOOLZONE" in big letters across the front of it. No need to spell it out.
  15. But haven't we all had moments like that? I've had about four on my current build.
  16. TonyOD

    Four what we are

    oh no! Underpants ablaze!
  17. While waiting for touch up paint to dry on the fuselage I've taken the masking tape off the rotor blades. I'd hoped for a nice clean black leading edge, but despite best efforts it's a bit of a bleed-fest...
  18. Just been touching up paint on those wrong 'uns. I'll get there... Looks nice. Mine was ridiculously scruffy at that point.
  19. I've decided to hold off with my Dragon Rapide until I can get hold of a rare-as-hens-teeth Kuivalainen photo etch bit, or my scratch building skills are, well, up to scratch, as I've chanced across a subject that will be an absolute labour of love if I ever do it. You never know, one might turn up. Only place I can find with them in stock are Czech dealers, one is "temporarily" not trading at the moment and the other doesn't seem to do business outside the Czech Rep/Slovakia. There is still the Corsair...
  20. If only they did the Austin Allegro.... Vanden Plas.
  21. I have turned up an old Pathe newsreel video that offers a tantalising glimpse...
  22. I'm along for the rude, if only to see if Italeri give as many headaches in 1/48 scale as they do in 1/72!
  23. The prospect of rigging terrifies me, but I can't consider myself any kind of FAA specialist until I've had a go at a Stringbag, can I? Add me in please!
