  1. Brings to mind Dean Martin singing "The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane", but I have to say this Shady Lady is looking splendid, Steve! Cheers, Mark
  2. Thanks, James, that's very kind of you! I use an airbrush, but this technique should work pretty well if brush painting, too. To get the worn patches, I painted the floor areas with Tamiya XF-78 Wooden Deck Tan (I mostly use Tamiya acrylics now, thinned with cellulose), and then with XF-85 Rubber Black, leaving oval-shaped areas of "wood" where I thought the wear would be. When it was dry, I went over it with a fibreglass pencil to scuff the black a bit and get rid of the overspray. Hope that makes sense! I meant to use some Citadel Seraphim Sepia over the "wood" before the black to give it some sort of grain effect, but I forgot I'd also forgotten to paint the head rest armour and pad, and the control column gaitor, so that was the sum of yesterday afternoon's efforts: The battery rack thingy popped off again, which was my "step and a stumble backward", but at least it made painting the headrest slightly easier.....thankful for small mercies and all that! Cheers, Mark
  3. Thanks, Steve, that's very kind of you. It's certainly a striking scheme and definitely one of the more anthropomorphically-correct nose-art renditions of the female form! I'm sure my Grandmother would not have been amused.....
  4. Looking splendid, Matt, all buttoned up, and the wheel bays are particularly nice in their alu'/ZC. Great work! Cheers, Mark
  5. My deepest sympathies, Pete, these little creatures are such an important aspect of our lives. RIP Frranko, bless you, old fella. Mark
  6. Thanks, Paul, that's incredibly kind of you!
  7. Hi Andy, many thanks for this extra info! It's interesting that there are a number of differing versions of Sydney's last minutes although most point towards his "have a go" spirit. The extract from the letter neither confirms or denies any of that - perhaps the "slow in getting down" simply alludes to Sydney making for the Defiant's turret. Either way, it was a sad end to a courageous man among so many courageous men. Thanks again and kind regards, Mark
  8. I meant to add that the excerpt from Grid Caldwell's DFC Squadron specifically mentions that the SEs were Viper-engined, which was going to be another of my questions. So thank you once again! Cheers, Mark
  9. That's brilliant, Paul, thank you! I have a copy of the Don Chester biography "Undaunted - the courage of Sydney Carlin" which is very interesting but doesn't contain many precise details, or indeed photographs. There is one photo in the book of Sydney standing alongside "his" SE5a, in which a part of a white rectangle marking can ben seen aft of the fuselage roundel, but that's all. Thanks again and best regards, Mark
  10. Interesting subject - I'll be following along if I may. The British Railways standards are definitely drawn from this style. Awful plastic colours, though Cheers, Mark
  11. Dear All, I recently came across reference to Sydney Carlin, a man of amazing resilience and strength of character. Sydney was seriously wounded in the trenches, and having had a leg amputated, went on to learn to fly and then to become an ace with 74 "Tiger" Squadron, where his wooden leg earned him the nickname "Timbertoes". He finished the Great War as a POW, having been shot down by Siegfried Westphal. He spent the interwar years farming in Kenya, but returned to Britain at the outbreak of World War Two. Despite his age, he rejoined the RAF, and served with 151 Squadron on Defiants as an Air Gunner. He lost his life in 1941 during an air raid when, instead of seeking shelter, he made for his Defiant' s turret to return fire, but was hit by strafing fire from an attacking Ju88. What this is leading to is that I would like to model Sydney's SE5 and Defiant. Is there any info "out there" that might give the serials/code letters of these aircraft? Any help/pointers Would be gratefully received. Cheers, Mark

  13. Thanks, Matt, that makes sense! Cheers, Mark
  14. Nice saves on both those issues, and great progress! The IP looks impressive. I'm a bit bothered about the shoulder harness on mine now.... Cheers, Mark
  15. It's been one of "those" weekends..... Marginal progress on the cockpit: two steps forward, one and a stumble backwards. Everything has been painted twice - thorough wash off and clean in between. The LH seat stay broke again and took three attempts to mend it. Anyways, here's where I'm at: Not much to show for it! Best leave it alone in case I break something else..... Cheers, Mark
  16. Great progress, James, the cockpit looks superb. I particularly like the worn floor, and the interior green where the black has "worn off" - excellent effects that really bring it to life. Cheers, Mark
  17. Nice work, Steve, the alu' finish is excellent! Cheers, Mark
  18. Great progress, Matt, the office looks very well appointed and the driver has scrubbed up very nicely! Cheers, Mark
  19. Great work on the cockpit, Matt, it's looking excellent!
  20. Fantastic choice, Colin, I'll be following your build! Such a great looking aircraft. I've got several of the other models from this series - Travel Air, Laird, Howard Ike - and despite their age they all look nice kits. I was considering the Travel Air, but the jury's still out Cheers, Mark
  21. Looks great, Martin, I should think you're well pleased with how its coming together. Looking forward to your next update. Cheers, Mark
  22. Welcome to the forum! You'll find loads of friendly and knowledgeable folk on here! Looking forward to seeing your builds! I'm in Derbyshire, and I build mostly aircraft in 1/48. Cheers, Mark
