Strictly speaking the 420 (and every Mk.2 derivative) had a steering box rather than a rack

I've seen a detailed-up version of the Bburago Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, although billed as 1:18 I'm not sure how close to scale it is. The main change that I remember was a set of wire wheels, which really improved the appearance.

Morris J Type - are there any kits out there?
johnlambert replied to Quiet Mike's topic in Vehicle Discussion
I think that's a lovely idea. -
Here's my contribution to the Revell Monogram Classic group build. The Monogram, ex-Aurora 1:25 scale Aston Martin DB4. The wheels are aftermarket and I used self-adhesive flocking for the carpet, the door mirror is from a Tamiya Mini Cooper and the body colour is Vauxhall Burgundy from a Halfords spray can. It was a bit of a tricky build in places but not too bad considering the age of the kit, everything was coming together nicely until I cracked the windscreen at the end of the build. The Aston Martin DB4 is one of my favourite cars, even if (or possibly because) it's less well known than its younger sibling the DB5. The kit seems to capture the shape well and most of the details of the Series 5 version of the DB4, in building I learnt more about the DB4 than I ever wanted to know. Under the bonnet there is some extra detail that is a part of no DB4 that I've ever seen but it is still one of the best detailed engine bays in a 1:24 or 1:25 scale kit that I've ever seen. Unfortunately I had to adjust the bonnet to get it to fit by adding plastic and with the thickness of the paint it isn't easy to open the bonnet, so it's staying closed now. I also ended up making my own boot hinge from bent wire because I didn't feel that the kit item was secure enough and I ended up making a full-width boot floor as I didn't like the idea of the model's battery being exposed next to the contents of the boot. If you like Aston Martins, 1960s cars or fancy a 1:25 scale model of a car that isn't American, I'd definitely recommend this kit. Just promise that, whatever else you do, you stop by Motobitz and buy a set of replacement wheels for it. The number plates are from the kit, but cut out including the backing paper because some of the decals were breaking up. You get a nice set of luggage with this kit. You can just see some of the engine bay through the bonnet scoop. Between two other 1:25 cars. Build thread here:

I don't think the Morgan is a Plus 8 for a coupe of reasons; it's on wire wheels where I think I've only ever seen Plus 8s on alloys, also the rear bodywork seems to have back seats which was a feature if the 4/4.

Good choice of kit. I used Valejo model air gold metallic over Tamiya fine grey primer. There's a lot of cleaning up to do on the parts but it makes a nice-looking car. Just don't do what I did and remove the detail on the rear pillar. If I were making another I'd probably try and build it in metallic light blue, trying to replicate Opalescent Silver Blue (I think Jaguar called it).

What CAR/BIKE kits have you recently bought 2?
johnlambert replied to shood23's topic in Vehicle Discussion
Great haul @dbostream the yellow Dodge Charger was the first kit I ever built. I'm trying to work out what the orange Heller kit above the Leyland Princess might be, is it a Renault? -
Monogram ex-Aurora Aston Martin DB4 1:25

Well, it kind of went a bit wrong. The windscreen started to pull out of the glue. Then the dashboard fell out, but that gave me a chance to fix a finger print that I noticed in the top of the dashboard. This is probably the best picture of the car, wheel spinners in place, door mirror is from a Tamiya Mini Cooper S. Then the windscreen cracked. At least the nose badge went on well. The boot badge broke up but I've pieced it together as best I could. The number plates were cut from the decal sheet and just glued to the body with tiny drops of PVA as I didn't trust them not to break up and I quite fancied the Swiss number plates.- 65 replies

Jaguar E type - Revell 1/24 by fnick
johnlambert replied to Fnick's topic in Work In Progress - Vehicles
Nick, did you scratch build those plug leads or are they aftermarket ones? Nice work, I hope you got the firing order correct @cmatthewbacon I was very glad of your tip for doing distributors when I did the Maserati 3500GT (12 plugs in 1:25 scale, which I think you've built too). -
The kit has Senna decals, no idea if they are correct but they're definitely in there.

Airfix Jeep Gladiator Overland Quickbuild (J6039)
johnlambert replied to Mike's topic in Vehicle Reviews
That looks like it builds up into a nice toy/model. My main gripe with the Quickbuild range is that they don't give a scale for each model, but that's from the perspective of a vaguely serious modeller and not the typical customer. It also didn't stop me buying a Quickbuild Beetle. -

The end is near. Fitting the sidelights and indicators, one of the sidelights disappeared. Fortunately I had these, purchased for just such an emergency. Not a perfect match but passable. Guess what, while fitting the windscreen and headlamps the missing sidelight appeared on the end of this cocktail stick. I didn't like the open-backed headlamps, so they were plugged with circles of styrene sheet and painted with chrome before adding the lenses. That's much better, I've also rechromed the front bumper and added the fog lamps. The glue is setting as I type, I have to say that it's looking rather splendid.- 65 replies

Monogram ex-Aurora Aston Martin DB4 1:25
johnlambert replied to johnlambert's topic in Revell-Monogram Classic Groupbuild
Although progress has slowed a little the Aston is still coming together. One carpeted boot floor. With the boot floor inserted into the body. There was a bit of a hitch when I realised that the grille should have gone in from the inside before the body and chassis were joined. Fortunately I was able to slide it in from underneath. Rear lights are painted, the doors are assembled and (hopefully) the boot lid is attached. Thanks for following.- 65 replies

I've built the street version of this kit. The body is quite tight over the interior, so make sure you assemble the door cards and dashboard correctly. But it's nicely detailed and I'm sure you'll produce a great model.

I'm not sure what this is, but I like it. I think this might be a 1956 Ford Fairlane convertible. My initial thought was Pontiac GTO, but I think it's actually a Chevrolet Chevelle. A Plymouth Satellite from about 1966. An Oldsmobile Cutlass, again I think from 1966. Zooming in, the licence plate reads "1956 Oldsmobile" and the boot (trunk) script states, "Ninety Eight", so I'm going to state that this is a 1956 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight. No idea, but I'm not a fan of those wheels. No idea, not my thing but looks quite nicely done. 1968 Dodge Charger, I think round tail lights were '68 only. Someone said Mercury and I'm not going to contradict them. 1958 Cadillac. I hope that helps, I've captioned to the best of my ability. I won't be offended if someone wants to mark my work

That's great, I love the 8-lug wheels on these; the centre is the outer face of the brake drum, to which the wheel rim is bolted.
-
I think it might have been JDM only but there was a convertible version of the 1990s Nissan Micra (sold as the March in Japan, I believe).

It looks really good, the grey (primer?) really emphasizes the 550's shark-like shape.

A kit for 2p, you can't go wrong, lol. Any chance you can post a picture or two of the kit contents please @Spiny? -
On current Ferraris I think the wing badges are separate, enamel items that have a wing pressing with a matched indent. Which goes some way to explain the high cost of the option (but the price of the option will outstrip the cost to the factory). On old Ferraris, the shields were stickers and the factory only applied them to works racing cars, but lots of owners applied them because they liked the look.

Monogram ex-Aurora Aston Martin DB4 1:25
johnlambert replied to johnlambert's topic in Revell-Monogram Classic Groupbuild
This update could be titled, Putting the boot in. I wasn't happy with the way the battery is visible in the boot, not only did this seem unsafe it didn't seem to match pictures I've seen of the real cars. So I decided to make an enclosure and an extended boot floor. I've used styrene sheet and some "L" section to make an enclosure and support for the boot floor. Test fitting, I think with a coat of paint it should look OK. I couldn't resist seeing what the luggage looked like in the boot. And here's a mock-up with the front brakes/hubs fitted and it definitely puts the front wheels in a much better place. If you want some more Aston Martin DB4 content, I watched this video earlier:- 65 replies

Monogram ex-Aurora Aston Martin DB4 1:25
johnlambert replied to johnlambert's topic in Revell-Monogram Classic Groupbuild
And some more Aston progress. Rear windows are installed. I separated the rear quarter windows from the rear windscreen and gave the quarter windows a bit of a sanding and polish to try and thin them down a bit and get a better fit. This is supposed to be a test fit but I might just leave the body on now. I always find it encouraging to see the body and interior colour in their proper places. Test fitting the wheels, I've drilled out the wheel centres which helps locate the wheels on the axles. Front wheels, the ride height might be a bit low, but that's probably better than too high. I think the aftermarket wheels are definitely the right way to go. The front wheels are tucked quite far in at the moment, but installing the front brake disks and proper hubs should fix that. It's getting there.- 65 replies

Proof that I've not forgotten the Aston. Window frames have been painted and today I touched in some of the body colour around the door opening and on the inside of the side vents (as pictures seem to suggest that body colour extended to these parts.
