  1. Thanks. I was going for the "two weeks on Soltau" look.
  2. Cheers John. I tried to use different shades and did the last application mixed with Quick Shine to make it look wet.
  3. It. puts the lotion on its skin.....ops sorry wrong movie 😄
  4. Thanks one and all - @ivan-oyou started me on this one - I couldn't let go of the mind worm you created.
  5. Hi, Folks, latest one from me. By a coincidence I received this recently for my birthday and it come up on my Sultan thread as SMM models were suggested for 12m masts by @ivan-o, which happen to be made for the Ferret, so I also ended up getting their Ferret upgrade kit as well. I meant to re-do this for a while as I confess I rushed the first one I did. The upgrade kit includes new hatches, replacement extinguishers and shovel, PE exhaust covers, reflectors and a new exhaust fish tail. I really like that I can choose to have the drivers small hatch open. I would definitely get another one if I decided to re-do it again. I also widened the grills on the kit part and replaced the rubies with clear resin. SMM do load of extras and you could easily fork out twice the kit price in upgrades. Paints are a mixture of Tamiya, Humbrol and Mig as were the weathering pigments. Gloss coat was Quick Shine, Vallejo matt varnish. The jerry cans are from the spares box. Water was left over from the Academy Warrior and the fuel was from the Hobby Boss Jackal. The straps were tape and the buckels come with the upgrade kit. Pleased with how the exhaust come out. It was the first time I used rust pigments. Bill
  6. Minus one for not making it a minion..... Only joking, cracking work.
  7. Ta, I was amazed how well it came out considering the absolute mess I made of it removing the jerrycan.
  8. Thanks to all that stuck with this to the end. The RFI is here. Bill
  9. Folks, to channel Monty Python, now for something completely different. This is my first 3D printed model and I bought it in the expectation that all it would need was a quick paint and bob's your mother's brother, but it didn't work out quite like that. The trials and tribulations of the WIP are here. I've been after a Sultan for ages since I spent many an exercise in the back of one. I am too tight to pay for the Accurate Armour so when I come across this one I took the plunge as it is half the price. The model itself is from Badger 3D and for the price I cannot grumble. Some details were spot on an others weren't. I chopped off the GPMG as it was terrible and the rear view mirrors were well over scale. My impression is it was designed in 1/72 and scaled up. I swopped out from the spares box the jerrycan and the antenna bases. I drilled out the light and the rubies and replaced with clear resin. The only extras I bought were the masts from SMM. The decals are from the spares box. Paints are a mixture of Tamiya/Mig and Humbrol. Gloss coat was Quick Shine and the washes were oil and terps. I also used a ton of Mister Surfacer and Mig Anti-slip paste. Bill
  10. https://www.scorpion-miniature-models.co.uk/product-page/smm3564h4-telescopic-clark-masts £3 for four plus p&p. Meant to be two with covers and two without; mine wasn't but again, worked in my favour. Thanks again to @ivan-o for the tip.
  11. The masts have arrived! Although, to my eye, they look more like Racal rather than Clark; not that I'm grumbling as that it what I actually wanted. When I opened the package I thought they looked undersized but they are spot on. Good job I didn't try and scratch build as I would have done them well too big. The repairs of the rear have been completed. Once the masts are painted and fitted I'll call this a good 'un, with maybe a bit of weathering. I had a mad idea of making a net and putting an oil can on the front shelf but it looked wrong so binned it. I'll post the RFI soon.
  12. So I'm not the only duty culprit.😆
  13. Right, you've caused a mind worm so I had to try it out. I meant to be WFH so if I get sacked I'm blaming you. I attacked the kit part with a hobby knife, sandpaper and a file. Not too bad for a rush job. I'll tidy it up and we'll see how it looks fitted once I get around to building the rest of it. Bill
  14. Ta. I'll give it a go, although I was wondering what could be achieved with thinning down/widening the holes on the kit part. I may give that a go first and if it all goes horribly wrong I can start again with card. Bill
  15. You know what, I don't care what anyone else says, I think you're fab. Ordered, and by some quirk of fate I've just been given the Airfix Ferret so I ordered the detail part for that as well. Unfortunately the upgraded grill is out of stock.🤬
  16. Cheers Ivan. I've not had a chance to do anything this weekend as family commitments have got in the way. I've had an idea of putting a oil can in the front tray and making the net to go over it. They always seemed to have one in there. Their CET looks the part but I've not had any experience of a real one to comment further. Bill
  17. Cheers Wogga. As 3D printing becomes more affordable and accessible as the technology improves I have the feeling it will eventually be the future for our hobby. I can see us getting to the stage where you buy the STL file instead of a physical kit. I keep looking printers but they still aren't cheap and with resin you also have the cleaning and curing with all the nasty chemicals. One day I may take the plunge but that won't be for a while, maybe once I've retired and I'll have more time to learn the ins and outs. I had vision of the Sultan arriving and just needing a quick paint job but it hasn't worked out like that. if I had gone for 1/72 I probably could have. Your 439 is a work of art - I'm surprised you haven't just designed and printed a Sultan yourself.
  18. A small update for today. I've done loads of small things but the damage on the back required more miliput. Dry brushed the canopy/penthouse and the tracks, applied decals, and done some chipping. Oh and painted the shackles which I keep forgetting. I've gotten rid of the GPMG. I don't have a spare, it looked terrible and someone pointed out the ammo can was on the wrong side. And I've just noticed that the strap for the jerrycan has gone for a burton and will need replacing. Next will be finishing the damage repair, re-do the green tint on the sights/window, matt coat and some weathering. Bill
  19. I had a frustrating day with staff officers so I went in with the Dremel. Bugger. Once the dust started I was so focused on the jerrycan I missed the collateral damage. So out come the miliput to try and repair the damage. Once it had dried I'll try and shape it. I've also painted some of the details and a pin wash Next will be clean up on the pin wash, decals, some chipping, dry brushing and trying to save the fire extinguisher and the light cluster. Bill
  20. Maybe. It'll probably be more forgiving than with a Dremel but I'm still not confident enough that I won't trash the door trying to get the replacement to fit. I used a sprue cutter to remove the antenna bases and I found they shattered and didn't cut cleanly. The resin is hard but brittle.
  21. Tonight's update: IRR black on body and tires/tracks. Gloss coat applied and still drying as I was taking pictures. I've also tinted the rubies A bit of snagging required on the wheels I compared the jerry can to a British one left over from my many Warriors. It is comically under scale (same for the D10 reel) so I'm worried about what else I'd have to move to make it fit. When I get a chance, next will be the snagging and painting the details. Bill
  22. They were water extinguishers in case the pavillion goes up, which then wouldn't make sense them being cream because that is foam. Maybe I miss remembered and it was red. It stuck with me because it stood out like a sore thumb.
  23. Good shout. I shall ponder further. I'll have to wear a mask as apparently the particles are toxic.
  24. Good spot. I had noticed that. The problem is I'm finding it doesn't cut cleanly and tends the shatter so I doubt I'll be able to remove it without trashing the door. I was contemplating painting it like a modern yank water carrier and pretending the crew blagged it.
  25. Thanks. I'm liking the look of their Saracen - if they did a Stalwart I'd be very tempted.
