Revell 1/48 Beaufighter TF.X
jackroadkill replied to jackroadkill's topic in Bristol Aeroplane Company GB
Yes, the top panels went on pretty well (I used them as a datum to square the rest of the assembly) so I'm not too worried about them. I'm more worried about the extremely skinny points on the main struts... -

I built the sub-assemblies up and painted them, so I hope they fit, but they don't look too special, really. I won't be fitting them until the very last second, as I think they'll last about as long as a snowball in a heatwave. -
Somehow I managed to miss this build. I have this same kit in my stash and am considering a Malta (possibly 105 Sqn) build - I wasn't aware of the issues you've encountered with your build, so thanks for the heads-up. Your build is looking great and I shall enjoy seeing the finished result.

The underside is done (ish). I might spray another very, very fine coat over it just to tone the last of the pre-shading down - I need to spray some sky on the Tempest that I'm oh-so-slowly building, so I could kill two birds with one stone, I suppose. Anyway, until I can get some ESDG for the topsides I think this is as far as I can go, so I'll concentrate on getting the Tempest and Defiant sorted for a few days. -
After looking at the Tempest staring at me in disapproval from the shelf of doom for weeks (the Defiant had given up staring, but more of that later) I decided to bite the bullet and actually do some work on it. I used Humbrol 104 for the blue and 153 for the base of the red, adding a bit of 60 to tone it down a bit and the merest hint of blue (96) to help with this. I then learned how to dance the roundel-spraying mask merry go round and got stuck in. The airscrew, spinner and remaining undercarriage parts were also sprayed. I also realised that if I'd been clever I would have sprayed the leading edges yellow and the sky fuselage band on before I did the camo, but I'll have to find a way of doing that post-camo now, so that's the next task, along with spraying the codes. Still, it finally feels like I'm getting somewhere now, so that's good. The end is in sight. Cheers, JRK

Make it eleven quid and have it next year?!
-
Yeah, me too; it would be great to build all the kits I'd intended to build in this GB!

Thanks Jamie, that’s brilliant. I’ll keep my eye out and will order a tin or two (along with a few more colours, because, well, why not?). -
We have many similarities, it seems! Welcome to BM - it's a slippery slope, though. It starts with a kit or two and the next thing you know your house is inundated with them.

Hello, Henrik! You've made a cracking good start - that Hornet looks superb for a first proper build. I see you've already run up against the model builder's Publice Enemy Number 1; time is what we're all short of. I'm working on a Hawker Tempest at the moment, which I think I started in January or February of this year, so I feel your pain! This forum has been of immense help to me since I returned to building kits after a 20-somethign year break last spring. I hope it proves as useful to you as it has to me. Cheers, JRK

Revell 1/48 Beaufighter TF.X

Oner step forward, two steps back - but this time it's entirely my own fault. I cracked on well this morning, getting some pre-shading done on the Beau and finally started to feel like it's coming together. I used a black with the tiniest touch of grey added for the upper surfaces as they will be EDSG when finished (more of this later...) and used this again on some panel lines on the underside, completing the others in dark earth. This was in order to not make the pre-shading over-stark for the sky undersides. It looks like this now: Those were the two forward steps. The backward step came when I realised that I don't have any EDSG. I can get Humbrol 123 simply enough but am trying to move away from the brand as I much prefer the Colourcoats paints. Unfortunately, Sovereign are out of EDSG at the moment and the only place that I can find which has some in stock is in Norway. Grrrr! -
I can't believe that I only managed a paltry one build for this STGB.... Still, you lot have done some excellent work on yours.

Uh, yeah.... Somehow it is now ten long days later and although I've worked on the Beau quite a lot she has resisted me at every step. I've sorted out the filling and sanding, which leaves me with a shedload of re-scribing of panel lines to do, mainly around the wing roots. The glazing is in, although both the canopy and the gunner's blister needed work to make them fir their respective apertures. The cooler inlets have been ground into shape, as have the carburettor intakes. Engines have been built (several times, I might add.....) and the cowlings aren't very round, due to the world's worst method of joining them together. I've drilled out the air inlets on the exhausts, only breaking one drill bit, and attempted to hollow out the fuel jettison pipes, breaking another, which is still stuck in there.... I've also built the undercarriage assemblies, which look pretty shonky and probably won't adequately support the weight of the model. Next in line is to paint the inner faces of the cowling flaps and get the dreaded engines in place. Somehow. I also have to fit the landing light lenses and covering, and then I think I'll be about ready to spray the beast with the basic colours. Well, once I've found a way to get the elevators to stick in position, of course. Still, bitching aside, it's actually beginning to come together now. I'd blithely assumed I'd get it done in time to rush through another entrant for the Bf109 STGB, but that's patently not going to happen. -
Another stunner, Werdna.

Tim's Airfix Beaufighter - COMPLETED

Wow, superb, Tim! Can I ask you what colour you chose for the inside of the cowl flaps, please? I'm struggling to find out what they would have been - I'm assuming interior green, the same as the the rest of the insides of the nacelles, but am not sure. -

Wow, that's come out pretty damned nice, hasn't it?! What a superb-looking beast she is, and in a very attractive scheme, too. You've done a cracker with this one, sir. -
I'm glad I'm not the only person who's always on the lookout for a nice Bristol or two; I've just got my hands on a nice, big twin set:

Thanks Adrian, very kind of you to say so. I'm hoping to get a crack at the beast this evening, so hopefully I'll have something more to show you soon. -

I'd seen your warning and bore it well and truly in mind as I built the wings up, so I owe you one! -

They were pretty basic and I ended up cementing everything in neutral positions, which was a shame. I wasn't planning on having the flaps extended, which was lucky really, but I would have liked a little asymmetry of the ailerons but their fit etc wasn't very conducive to this. -
Blimey, I'd forgotten about this kit - my brother built one in the early-ish 1990's. I remember we couldn't find anything to make a condenser hose out of, for some reason, and the Tommy gun hung around the house for months afterwards, as for some reason he didn't include it in the build. I'll look forward to seeing how you get on with the build - it's got off to a great start.
