  1. I only did aircraft in my yoof. Always been interested in WW2 but read Spike Milligans war memoirs early in the year which sort of kick started my interest in the Desert War in N Africa.......
  2. As kit is grey plastic, primer was Tamiya Grey spray paint and then Tamiya TS-3 spray can and then for touch ups Tamiya acrylic XF-60 Dark Yellow.
  3. After a prolonged (over 35 years!) absence away from the hobby, I have started up with the modelling bug once more! My first 'real' attempt is the Tamiya 1/35 Horch 4x41a, being modelled in DAK colours. (did an Italeri 1/35 Kubelwagen back in April but keeping this as my practice model). I will also be attempting a diorama when it is complete! Anyway here goes, first steps. I've never done washes, dry brushing or weathering before, so please be gentle on me!!! Applied a AK Afrika Korps Wash and started drybrushing on the wheels Needs some touching up on the doors. More to do but will keep it going!!1
  4. Tamiya 1/35 Horch 4x4 1a - can get the kit for about £10 and is reasonable size for trying weathering (although not a 'tank' it is a grey German vehicle)
  5. On suggestions I've gleaned from this forum, I've invested in some 2 part epoxy putty and going to attempt to make some packs etc. I've also tried making tarpaulins from double tissue, using diluted PVA glue (just made 2 and waiting for them to dry!!). As Longbow posted above, its all part of the fun!!
  6. As I've only returned to modelling after a gap of 30+ years so am trying to learn a lot!!! Thanks for the updates - I've done some further research thanks to the pointers given. I'm finding that the cost of these extras actually outweighs the actual base model kit themselves!!! I may have to wait until I've built a few more models and have a 'spares' kit to draw upon!
  7. I'm starting to build my first diorama using the Sd.Kfz 222 and Horch 4x4 Type 1a (both using the 1/35 scale Tamiya kits) and want to add the paraphernalia that would be carried around (packs, rucksacks etc) on the outside of the vehicle. I have oil drums, jerrycans etc in the Tamiya Sd.kfz 222 kit I'm about to start building, so I'm ok for these 'accessories'. Can anyone recommend a kit that is available for these? (similar to the Tamiya 35229 Allied Vehicle Accessory set). I've trawled through various online shops but cannot find anything plus used Scalemates.com as a resource as well. Thanks in advance!!
  8. I'm thinking if buying the Tamiya 35020 Sd.Kfz 251/1 Hanomag and I believe that the base colour of the model is grey. As I want to model this in the DAK colour scheme, what is the best colour primer to buy if I'm going to finish the model in DAK Desert Yellow? Apologies if I've posted in the wrong forum but as a newcomer to the site and only just reintroducing myself into scale modelling, I'm looking for guidance from the gurus out there! Thanks
  9. I know it has moved on....the sheer amount of modelling tools, paints etc available is astounding. I did manage to get a copy of Chris Ellis' tome 'How to Go Plastic Modelling' which I had back as a teenager. Aahh the memories! This forum has been useful so far....picked up some good tips already.
  10. With the current situation, decided to start up modelling again (it's been over 35 years since I last made one!). I've always had an interest in WWII and especially the North Africa Campaign, so this is going to be my starting point. I've managed to build myself a portable work desk (thanks to the idea on http://www.scalemodelguide.com/basics/general-information/portable-workstation/) and have over the last 2 weeks put together a basic toolkit and have decided to have a go at a DAK diorama (maybe a bit ambitious but we'll see). I'm using an Italeri 1/35 Kubelwagen and Tamiya 1/35 Panzerkampfwagen II as the 2 basic kits. The biggest challenge for me is weathering the kits when finished (I've never done washes, weathering etc) so will be using the forums for advice and guidance.
