  1. Well,,, Longer I watched my base, I liked it less. Finally I decided made it once again. At first I made a balsa-wood frame.

    9KLo31e.jpeg

Then I watched some fotos with ships to know what effect I want achieve. I'm not very familiar with all these All this wakes, waves and foam... Here are most interesting photos (from forposteriorityssake and navsource webpages):

    nOFARaP.jpeg

    IKQAU2G.jpeg

    QIqpZ5t.jpeg

As usually watching photos with real objects helped me a lot. I sketched waves on styro-foam and sculpted it with chip electric-chisel.

    YMq837k.jpeg

    ZYeQlSp.jpeg

As previously, I smoothed surface with diluted modelling paste.

    uBqLImK.jpeg

I also added some gel with microballs for wakes, crests and moving water.

    uv26pKK.jpeg

Then I glued paper handkerchief. I made glue from diluted medium with a little blue acrylic paint.

    NuvwC3H.jpeg

    2JiP9BQ.jpeg

Then I brushed a few semi-tranparent layers of medium mixed with paint. I gave less paint in stern area between wakes. Finally it is somewhat lighter colour with more details of wavelets. I like this effect it simulates delicately moved water:

OUEkWZJ.jpegFinally added some Sea Foam Texture from Green Suff World. Thats how it looks now. I think it is still long way for improvement, but I'm quite satysfied.

Looks really interesting Michal - who is the manufacturer?

This person just announces his model on polish modelling-forum, Modelwork. He even has no his web-site so it is a little bit mysterious matter. 😉 Top-secret industry??? :wicked:

"Birdie is his second or third model, earlier he produced cold-war era soviet Osa-class missile boat. 13 such boats served in Polish Navy during 1964-2006.

Quite small (39 meters) boat but quite complex, I think.

    Michal,

Your images are coming through (to me) as little blue squares with “?” on them. Perhaps it is a setting or something at my end? Or maybe because I am viewing them on my phone—others  seem to be able to see them. The pics of the real ships came across fine though.

    Jeff

I am very sorry I don't know why you can't see my pictures. I always load these from Imgur. Has anybody the same problem?

Meanwhile I still work with water on my Hibiscus-model...

  3. Today I purchased new kit of small polish producer. If you think Flower Corvettes are small, look and compare:

    wFEJOMD.jpeg

    zFCIaWs.jpeg

"Birdies" were 6 small (45 meters) coastal minesweepers/minelayers bulit in Poland during 1935-1939. They carried up to 20 mines and were armed 1 75 mms gun and 2 machine guns. e Jaskółka class was a versatile design which allowed the ships to serve in the role of either a minesweeper, small minelayer or a sub chaser.

More here: ORP Jaskółka - Wikipedia

and here: Jaskółka-class minesweeper - Wikipedia

In September 1939 they laid some mine fields around polish coast, supported with guns polish infantry and fought against German airplanes. Some of them were bombed by Ju-87 Stukas and sunk.

Later, a few birdies served in Kriegsmarine as atorpedo trials craft and after war again in polish Navy as patrol crafts while Żuraw (Crane) was survey vessel and training ship.

Mast is 3D printet too and has various details:

  4. Slowly I am adding various details. Anchors, winch, railings, canvas dodgers and depth charges.

For canvas dodgers I used thin aluminium foil. I like its somewhat tired and weathered look.

  5. @robgizlu, @Jeff.M - as you see, I am very good boy (or I try at least ;-))) and I'm listening to the advices of the wisers. What I did?

I removed boat platforms with CA remover and cleaned these. Then I just sicked PE parts with 0,2 mm plastic sheet, painted and washed with dark brown wash. And painted shells yellow. I also added grating imitation on bridge-extention.  It is just PE-fret painted with light wood colour.

    QowHEzr.jpeg

    EJYroCK.jpeg

When I watched @theskits62 fantastic Round Class trawler I realised it was perfect boat's platform reproducing:

    53473519169_5ed14c209b_z.jpg

However 1/72 and 1/350 models are quite different worlds. My interpretation is not perfect but good enough for me.

And finally once more detail: adding front support under pom-pom platform was very difficult and tricky. That was a reason why I bought a new tweezer, quite specific shape. And... finally after a few attempts, I succeeded!

    Hope more soon.

  6. Once again sorry for long pause. Life...

HMS Hibiscus already with decals printed by my friend. Thank you!

    e38dz8l.jpeg

Beside, I did a few small modifications.

I extended bridge and relocated some portholes. I modified as well aft Vickers baystand - removed shelter and lip around baystand's edge. On stern I added depth charge's doors. Unfortunately I think they aren't very accurate, but I will not change these.

    M9ei5FN.jpeg

I have two questions. First - which colour I should paint gun shells located around gun? Metallic, brass or just grey?

And the second one. Behind the bridge we have platforms for boats. Utill now I thougt they were made just from thick wooden boards with no epty spaces between these boards. Have you ever seen such open-work platforms here?

That's lovely work, build and paint job, well done!  I've just finished re-reading 'The Cruel Sea', and the second ship featured in the book is a River Class Frigate, HMS Saltash, nice to see what she would have looked like.

I read The Cruel Sea (in Polish) first time when I was about 12 years old. Even today I find Monsarrat's book very good and touching. Another good book by the same author I wrote is Three Corvettes.

So what's next then after you've finished HIBISCUS?

Thank you for so niiice questions. Our new buys and plans - thats what we like talk about the most. 😉

This year is 90th Anniversary of D-Day. This is good motivation for finishing LST-52 model.

I begun it once a day however it bored me when I sanded of oversized ribs on hull. Now I think I rested enough and I'm ready to go further.

    And what else?

Maybe finally something with Polish white and red ensign? There is nice 3-D printed 1/350 model of post-war Osa missile boat clas made by one modeller from Poland...

...and finally I hope I will at least start this year Trumpeter's new Dido. I consider HMS Naiad or a little newer HMS Sirius or Argonaut.

Lovely work, what an interesting ship. I really like the colours used not to mention the weathering, spot on

One remark, today i would paint decks rather grey instead Brown, I think grey is more likely.

I'm glad you added more photos because they really show the efforts you've gone to!

Thank you, I had lot of fun making photos too. Especially those with her "steel sisters", Copper Cliff and Hibiscus together. I like these photos which give you illusion being on real ship too and I tried to do such shots.

  9. Fantastic model.

At once you are thinking: grey, grey. No streaks, no chips. Kingdom of boredom. But later...

You are more and more involved. So many subtle shades (of Grey? 🤭) , factures (canvas boat covers!!!, ropes, rusty chains, wood and so on), details and colours. Fascinating story, I watched your model a few times and still I like to come back here.

Could you write how did you do canvas boat-cover, please?

Real gem and fascinating model, gratulations!

That's a superb end result Michal - I especially love the weathering which is so excellent.  The rigging is top notch with double halyard wires (how'd you do that!)

    Thank you, Rob.

It isn't sofisticated. Infinity is very easy to work so I wouldn't have problems with it. However I have only black thread from Inifinity. White thread was much more difficult: it was very soft and bending and unravelled (?). So i just dripped thread's end in CA glue to make it smoother and more stiff.  tried to roll the thread between bedrivelled (sorry!) fingers. Of course at first I had to find good attaching points: railing or special frame like on picture behind.

It's great to see Hibiscus in the background - what a great Camo scheme - let's see some progress on that

I'm working now with my own earlier faults. When I begun buiId this model I just undersetimated differencies between various ships and made poor research. That was a reason why I temporally lost my motivation for this beautiful flower. Beside, I have broken a few 3D parts. I will repair it of course  but it was somewhat frustrating. Stupid boy, Michal!  However I think I'm back on the track again. More - soon!

  11. @Alun Gallie , @Foghorn Leghorn , @MilneBay @mick b- thank you!

    NoV92Kv.jpg

Starling's River is very good resin model with nice and decent PE fret. Only two faults I found are wrong aft AA platform's shape and wrong maing guns  and aft AA guns cofiguration. Fortunately these problems are easy to resolve.  Nevertheless I found some details oversimplified and decided to improve and detail it. Let me show you for example how I changed the bridge. I think it is one of crucial model's points, always eye catching:

    702gTQS.jpg

    2CoRBwW.jpg

    ePHfibp.jpg

    kfYw9n3.jpg

Most details I used were from excellent Micromaster and Black Cat sets (guns, depth-charges boats, carley floats, minesweeping gear, various boxes and figures) however I used another sets too (anchors and excellent bridge equipment from North Star Models, a few figures, rope-grommets, Oerlikon-bases from L'Arsenal, Oerlikon-shields from Aber, anchor-chains from Trumpeter and wooden deck for bridge - I don't remember).

Decal with pennant number was printed by my friend Marek - thank you really very much!

One special set is anti-skid plates. This set containing 3 different patterns were designed and produced after studying many real ship's photos by my friends from small polish company, Shelf Oddity. I think they can produce these sets on request.

    Om1RwNc.jpg

For rigging I used excellent black and white (for halyards) Uschi thread and extremly thin (0,06 mms) metal wire for long, horizontal wires between foremast and mainmast (how to call it English?), once again from Shelf Oddity. As I wrote earlier, eyelets are from L'Arsenal Rigging Sets, however you can find similair sets from varous producers.

    SO700050_03-500x500.jpg

    kEZIsdF.jpg

I added as well many details made just from scratch. Hull-plates, boat-davits, funnel-grill, signal-flags lockers and many, many more. It was the most time-consuming part of this build but the most satisfying too. Lead and copper wires, plastic plates and profiles, PE checks and bars give more opportunity for your imagination and planning.

    Let's start our walk.

This is my second seriously-built ship's model and I learned many, many new techniques. It took me much more time than I anticipated and I had to made a few long pauses (for example after bending by accident nearly completed tripod-mast)  however I think this time and effort was good investment and final result is quite satisfying.

    Michal
