I missed this until now, now I see it I'm stunned. What a magnificent model. 👏 Richie

Brilliant, that's beautifully made and finished. Richie

Was about to make a suggestion but @Thom216 has got you covered. I will be trying this method when i get to that stage on my L'Oiseau Blanc project. Richie

You'll get the best ones from there. If your local high street is anything like mine there'll be loads of nail salons and beauticians to choose from.

Glass nail files are great, I use them for shaping my nails for guitar playing but thought they'd be perfect for modelling. They come in various degrees of coarseness and are brilliant! i

It's been a long time since I updated this. The last update was about my attempt to rescue the top wing that had gone horribly wrong after a bit of rough handling and some pretty approximate modelling. It looked OK at a passing glance but from the side it looked like this; BE2c top wing fail by Richard Williams, on Flickr Every time I looked at it I hated it even more and quitting the fags robbed me of the necessary mojo to start again so I began another project which needed some home made decals. Whilst at it I made some for this one too. Some of you will have seen this picture on my L'Oiseau Blanc build Home printed BE2c decal. by Richard Williams, on Flickr I was so chuffed that my mojo returned and I decided it was time to remake the top wing. Making the wing ribs was a hugely time consuming business last time so I did things a little differently this time. The brass template was used to drill the holes in the styrene blanks and draw the shape, each strip of 1x3.2mm styrene yields 7 rib blanks. These was then cut roughly into shape with my Xuron clippers and pinned together with brass rod. These were then tacked together with superglue at each end and sandwiched between the templates. I have noticed that using Zip Kicker makes superglue more brittle which can be a real pain in the backside but in this case it makes separating the ribs easier. 20230817_142253 by Richard Williams, on Flickr After a bit of scrapery with a new scalpel blade 20230817_144444 by Richard Williams, on Flickr These blocks of ribs are then threaded onto brass rod and block sanded. I used a glass nail file because it is completely rigid and gives a smooth surface. 20230817_152704 by Richard Williams, on Flickr Because the rib blanks were only glued at either end it is easy to inset a blade between the in the middle and separate them. I wish I had done it this way before, the whole process took a morning instead of a week. Live and learn! I'll be back with another update soon, I aim to finally finish this project by the end of September which barring any more mishaps or silly blunders should be possible. Thanks for reading Richie

Levasseur Pl.8 L'Oiseau Blanc 1/32 Scratch Build
RichieW replied to RichieW's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
The BE2c I'm making was paid for by a collection from St. Catharines. The Vintage Aviator Ltd made a replica but spelled it St. Catherines after all the hard work of making everything so beautifully! Cheers matey, that's really encouraging. I'll have an update on the other channel shortly. Just in case anyone following this build is interested here is a link to my marathon BE2c project; I'll be back on this once I have finished the BE2c, I may be some time! Richie- 74 replies

Levasseur Pl.8 L'Oiseau Blanc 1/32 Scratch Build
RichieW replied to RichieW's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
Cheers Chris, I'm quite pleased with it now. In time I'm sure I won't even think about the slightly raised decal edges. Definitely time to move on, I haven't finished a model for over 2 years now! Merci J-M, the French blue has been a bit of a puzzle for me. It's great to have the approval of an old French soldier! Richie- 74 replies

Thanks so much James for your kind compliment and the sage advice. I do tend to get bogged down with things that most wouldn't notice and the rest would probably sympathise with. Richie- 74 replies

Levasseur Pl.8 L'Oiseau Blanc 1/32 Scratch Build
RichieW replied to RichieW's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
No apology needed Mike, it made raised a laugh and made me feel a little less unfortunate! Well my neighbours have still not returned so this is not the blue I intended but I quite like it and it will do. 20230815_203736 by Richard Williams, on Flickr The decals are much better than the previous ones I printed, the edges are still visible if you look for them but like the blue colour they will do. I came to the conclusion that the rudder is just a small part of what will be a truly massive 18 inch wingspan model. The decals are just a small part of the rudder so it's time to stop torturing myself and move on. Speaking of moving on I need to put this to one side for now while I try to finish my BE2c in time for my club show at the end of September. Thanks for dropping in Richie PS Any recommendations for a true matt finish acrylic clear coat?- 74 replies

FAA builds, 32nd Hawker Nimrod ,Seafire now finished

Great to see the Nimrod back underway. The interior looks great, it must be a great mojo boost to have the fuselage halves together. Richie -

I'm glad you noticed, TVAL got it wrong on their replica! 🙄 Cheers, I do hope so. It's breached the 2 year mark now. Still nowhere near your 8 year Hawk record though. 😇 Richie- 74 replies

Yes, it's really frustrating knowing that the package is just the other side of the dividing wall. At least it's pushing me back towards the mojo crushing BE2c. 🤔 Richie- 74 replies

Levasseur Pl.8 L'Oiseau Blanc 1/32 Scratch Build
RichieW replied to RichieW's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
Sorry for not updating for a while I have been held up by unfortunate paint related circumstances. Before I can apply the rudder decals I need to repaint it and therein lies the problem. My paint order was delivered to my neighbour while I was out for the day and before I returned they went away on holiday. Not ideal really! In the meantime I did reprint the decals on Expert's Choice laser decal paper and am so much happier with the thickness. Cutting them out with scissors and giving the edges a gentle buff as recommended by @AdrianMF proved to be excellent advice too. Here is one applied to my BE2c project before applying a coat of varnish. 20230813_151021 by Richard Williams, on Flickr Even in brutal close up I can't see a raised edge to the decals which was very noticeable with the last batch printed on Gekko decal paper. Once I get my hands on the paint I will have a proper update for you. Many thanks for your patience and all the sound advice about home made decals. Richie- 74 replies

What a great and very thorough experiment with creating the wing rib textures. I expected nothing less from you! The primer/surfacer method looks fantastic. It's good to see the team of lego helpers back in action too. I'm looking forward to seeing the vac forming results now. Richie -
I will never complain about making wing ribs again. That bomb bay must be a real test of staying power. Worth the effort though, it looks amazing. Serious modelling brilliance on show here! 👏👏👏 Richie
