Venus wars ( Anime film )
Vile Traveller replied to Pilgrim_UK's topic in Science Fiction Discussion
I was considering it to add to my 1/20 Ma.K. stash, but it was too late for my last HLJ package (which only took 3 months) - no plans to get any more now, I'm retired and finally able to start on that shelf of kits. Only 350 to go before I run out and need to start buying more. Looking forward to some build threads of this here in the meantime. Weird coincidence, I'd never heard of Venus Wars before this kit came out, and I didn't pay attention to which anime it came from then. A couple of weeks ago I happened to watch the anime, and was very surprised when the monocycles appeared on screen! -

Somehow, of all kits, Matchbox seem to call for building out-of-the-box without add-ons or improvements. I still love those old kits regardless of accuracy or detail. They may not have been the best in that regard, but to me at the start of my modelling obsession they always seemed like the best-made kits.

Excellent testbed. with those proportions it could almost qualify as a Bandai "Super-Deformed" kit! 🤣

Roden 1/72 Bristol Fighter

Nice to see a Brisfit in the flesh. If you had trouble with that lower wing attachment, just imagine what it must have been like for the real thing! -
Ye Olde Matchbox Vickers Wellesley....
Vile Traveller replied to Old_Scopie's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
A nice finish, your pic really brings home the huge wingspan of the Wellesley. The majority of my teenage builds were Matchbox, precisely because they were such easy builds - perhaps not the best in terms of detail or accuracy, but always a really good fit. And, as mentioned above, for some subjects there was no choice other than Matchbox! There is a Matchbox Model Kit Appreciation Group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2011417682416561 -
Stuka! Airfix 1/24th classic
Vile Traveller replied to tomprobert's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Beautiful - nice to see one of these done properly (unlike the one that hung from the ceiling of my 13-year old self!). -
Beautiful rendition of this version. A greatly under-appreciated film, I always thought.

Nice to see one of the old Matchbox classics coming out of the box! I have fond memories of building this one in '81 or so.

Very nice finish for the old hairy sticks. What scale are these? Looks tiny. -
Matchbox 1/72 He-70 Blitz

Beautiful job with a beautiful aeroplane! I have a soft spot for Matchbox from my youth when I built almost nothing else. -
Very appropriate! My favourite Thunderbird, unfortunately never managed to snag a kit (well, I do have the new super-deformed one by Aoshima).

Thanks for the welcome! Unfortunately the hobby shops here have been in decline for a long time, partly because of the rise of online alternatives and partly because the local youth just aren't into models any more. And if you've seen any recent news about Hong Kong you'll know the rest of it isn't what it was, either ... Still, I'm looking forward to the next phase of my life!

I get a "Access to am3pap006files.storage.live.com was denied" message - perhaps it's set to restricted access?

Well, I'm retiring a little early, so it wasn't as long a hiatus as it sounds. However, I do expect Senior Management to keep me quite busy getting the retirement home and garden ship-shape, so there's no time to lose! 😅

Greetings, all! I've just retired, and will be moving from Hong Kong back to the UK with the aim of finally cracking open some of my collection of kits and actually building them. I stopped building models pretty much when I started work, and it feels like I've been accumulating them my whole working life in anticipation of the day when I'd have some time ... though I need to set a good pace, according to my spreadsheet (yes, I have a spreadsheet) I have 330 of them now. Mostly anime subjects acquired on frequent trips to Japan (Gasaraki, Space Battleship Yamato, Macross, Xabungle, Ma.K, etc., etc.), though I also have a soft spot for between-the-wars and WWII aircraft. Looking forward to embarrassing myself on the forums!

I remember building two of these in my youth (when they were still Matchbox), one straight out of the box and one modified as a civilian version to use as a prop in a Biggles-inspired role-playing game. One of the easiest biplane kits for getting the wings aligned, I had terrible trouble with most I attempted over the years but with this kit the engine assembly is very solid and keeps the upper wing nice and straight. The undercarriage was a bit floppy, though. Are you going to open up the rectangular windows below and aft of the canopy? There's a pic here which shows what I mean: https://www.airliners.net/photo/UK-Navy/Supermarine-236-Walrus-1/1517537

Speaking of corrugations, how did you find the experience of placing the decals, especially on the wings? I haven't attempted anything like this since two attempts on JU 52s years ago - one a Revell, don't remember what the other one was. Neither of them was, shall we say, successful! But I do still have a hankering to have a go one of these days.

Just re-watched the entire series earlier this year, will be following this thread with interest!

AT-ST. Bandai 1/48.
Vile Traveller replied to Andrés S.'s topic in Work In Progress - SF & RealSpace
Beautiful detailing, I especially like the dirt accumulated at the back of the cockpit floor - really brings it to life. But, having looked at the finished model (and the one I have still in its box), how much of the interior can actually be seen once it's closed up? -
Well, as it's a Ma.K and thus exempt from more than token aerodynamics, you could consider losing the tailplane entirely. Maybe add some bumps and bobs where the cuts are? That might further anonymise the donor, too.
