  1. I have a quick question regarding the colours of the  ( Feed chutes ? ) on either side of the MG's on the Fokker Dr. 1 triplane. I'm building the Meng 1/24 model, and according to their instructions the chutes should be painted olive drab ? Looking at period photos they seem to be a similar shade to the guns themselves, so are the instructions correct ? I'm out of my comfort zone with WW1 airplanes, as I usually build later types, so any info would be much appreciated.

  2. Hi everybody. I'm about to start my Meng 1/32 triplane in the earlier scheme  with the red nose and rear fuselage, and I'm wondering about the colour of the struts . There are pictures of two beautifully built examples on the Aviattic website, one showing red painted struts and the other being olive / grey.

I have the Aviattic decal set for this model, but there is no info regarding the colour of the struts, so would anyone know what the colour is likely to be ?

I know WW I aircraft colour schemes are perhaps not as readily available as more recent airplanes, but I'd like to get an accurate scheme  which is generally considered correct if possible.

  3. Hello chaps,

I've just bought  a set of 1/24 seat harness 3D decals for my Fokker Dr. 1, but I was surprised there were no instructions on how they should be applies . . . Just a blank backing card !

So, do i apply them as normal decals, over a gloss surface like I would normally do, or is there a particular method to use ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

  4. Hi guys,

Santa very kindly brought me the Meng 1/24 Fokker triplane for Christmas, and I have a couple of questions regarding details, as WWI airplanes are out of my usual comfort zone !

Firstly, can anyone advise me as to where I might find details about the rigging wires ? I know there aren't many, but the instructions have no info regarding these, which seems strange, and also can anyone suggest wnat I should use for these ( i.e : stretched sprue, etc. ) Any help at all would be most appreciated.

  5. Hi everyone,

I've been using the above varnishes for some time now, as they do not yellow over time like conventional varnishes, but I was wondering if they are acrylic based ? The reason I ask is because although Humbrol say you can thin them with their thinners ( Or white spirit, which is what I use ) they do dry very quickly, like acrylics. I always leave it 24 hours before re - coating anyway, but painting over it with enamels is a no no ( Ask me how I know ☺️ )

Also, they do seem to remain very slightly " tacky " if handled for any length of time, even several months after use. I would be interested in your thoughts on this, and any info would be much appreciated.

This area is treated as an external surface, so painted OD on aircraft that were finished in OD and was left unpainted starting with 42-25274. These factory photos shows the turtle deck painted OD. Some people think that it wasn't OD just because of how the colour appears in some photos.

Weathering plays a big part in why it often looks lighter, but often they waxed the exterior of the aircraft giving it a darker and shinier appearance. The canopy also can affect the look, notice here how the turtledeck is lighter but the fuselage area behind it looks a little lighter than the rest of the fuselage.

Some aircraft appear to show the turtledeck considerably lighter than the rest of the fuselage such as on this aircraft. But note this is a war weary airframe, so has been around a while and a lot of the paint on the fuselage isn't original.

Some aircraft get repaired and this area might not get repainting OD. Some people have surmised this is what could have happened with "Little Chief". Personally I don't thing that is the case with that airframe as it's not as light as others Ive seen.

Here's a few more examples of photos which clearly show the OD.

This area looking lighter can easily be achieved on a model. Here's one of my P-47's after painting and you can see the turtledeck is painted with the same OD as the rest of the model.

Here it is after weathering and varnish coats, the turtledeck now appears a lot lighter than the rest of the aircraft.

Thanks for that, Tbolt. that last photo really shows the effect on your model, so I shall  now use OD on my model. Of course if I had done a bubbletop P-47 that wouldn't have been a problem, but I definitely prefer the " Razorback "

As noted above, the paint used was Dark Olive Drab.  Also as noted, the paint faded more dramatically than the exterior color, so you can gray things up a bit for your model.  However, do NOT use any of the interior greens.

    Cheers,

Thanks Dana . . . I think I'l go with the slightly lightened colur as you suggest. It might not be 100 per cent right, but at least it will look like the photos I've seen. Someone will come along now and tell me that's wrong !  😂.

  8. Hi everybody,

Just about to fit the canopy to my 1/48 P-47D  LM - Q  27937 of the 56th. FG and I would like some clirification regarding the area behind the canopy. I've seen  info on Frank Klibbe's " Little Chief " which states that this area was painted dark grey, but other pics seem to indicate that it was olive drab, as per the sirplane's colour scheme.

My question is would other aircraft be painted like this, or would it be some other colour i.e. the cockpit green shade, or olive drab  ? Any help would be much appreciated

Sorry I don't have much info on her.  Obvious many aircraft had the red surround to the insignias but it was only done in the summer of 1943 and they started painting them out in August 1943, though it was a while before they were all changed to blue.  These stills from a video show her with the red surrounds but the "Triss" doesn't look like it's been added yet. Note she has the wip style radio antenna and no mirror on the windshield.

In this photo the "Triss" isn't visible either, but this photo is from after they repainted the cowl band to yellow so it looks like they didn't repaint the name at that point. Now she has the standard windshield mirror fitted.

    carcione5.jpg

Sometimes I just have to guess on the lower insignias as they varied a lot. I would maybe go for a 55" under both wings as I can't quite tell from the quality of the photo I have, what size the insignia is under the right wing.

I don't know what your photos show but being a D-1 she might not of had the oil cooler outlet deflector fitted - if your photos don't show this area then I would remove it.

    Hi  Tbolt,

Thanks for your info, that's really interesting. I looked on youtube and found a superb USAAF film called "Ramrods To Emden " featuring the 56th. FG, and towards the end there is a superb shot of  LM - Q  approaching it\s dispersal  and it shows that there were the large insignia under both wings, and also the oil cooler outlet, which is a relief as I'd already fitted that !

Maybe the Kits World decals are depicting the a/c at a later date, but I suspect they just got it wrong. Not a problem as I have the correct decals in my stash.

Anyway, thanks for all your help . . .It's much appreciated.

  10. high guys,

Just finished this model for a friend and enjoyed it so much I thought I'd build one for myself. I've decided to do  a 56th. FG machine LM - Q " Triss " serial No. 27937, and would like some advice regarding markings. I have the Kits World decal sheet, which shows the standard insignia blue and white stars and bars, but I've found photos of the actual a/c which would appear to show the earlier markings with the red surround . Also, I've seen photos of two models, one with the insignia in the usual position of above port and below starboard, and one depicting the " oversize " markings under each wing ?

Does anyone have any info regarding this a/c, as I do try to get these things right ( Yes, I do know about the lower cowl flaps on this earlier machine 🙂 )

Any help would be much appreciated.

This probably the best image I can find for Klibbe's "Little Chief" It appears that the bar is in place on the fuselage side but missing where the intercooler door is retracted. Maybe @gingerbob or @Tbolt could comment on my fairly uninformed conclusion.

PS This thread from LSPs has both sides of the same aircraft as I understand it which should help show what you're seeing inP-47 photos.

    Steve.

Thanks for the info. There is a good photo on the Eagle Cajs  instruction  sheet which shows a better view of the left hand side, and it definitely appears to be missing that part of the insignia. Also, I've just noticed that the box art has that part missing as well, so I think I'll go with that.

Anyway, thanks for all your help . . . It's much appreciated

  12. Hi guys,

I'm building the Tamiya 1/48 P-47D " Razorbaxk " in the markings of Frank Klibbe's " Little Chief " and I've noticed that on the photos I've seen it appears that           The intercooler doors on the side of the fuselage are missing part of the star and bar insignia . could it be a photographic anomaly, or was it not painted in ?

Any help would be much appreciated. .

  13. Hi guys, I'm building the above model as " Little Chief " of the 56th. FG, and I would like to build the a/c without the centreline fuel tank. Tamiya provide a slot for the tank to be attached, along with the sway braces.

My question is : Was there a slot as depicted in the model, or some other arrangement when not carrying drop tanks ( ie: a blanking plate of some kind ? I can't imagine the a/c would fly with a big slot in the fuselage like that .

Does anyone have any info regarding this subject, as I'm not so familiar with P-47's ? Any help would be much appreciated.
