1/48 Hasegawa P-38-J 55th FS 1944
Inverted replied to Inverted's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Thanks for the comments I used the eduard Zoom set, whilst basic i found sufficient to detail enough. The only lacking part maybe the radio sets behind the seat, nothing some lead wire wont fix! I had no issues that werent easy to overcome. The boom joints were a little fiddly but some sanding and dryfitting was all it took, and just a smidge of squadron green. For me the worst part was assembling the 5 parts of the canopy. Maybe a vacform from Squadron maybe the way to go? -
Latest off the bench is my P-38J flown by Lt. Richard Loehnert From RAF Kingscliffe in June 1944. Hasegawa kit, bought from Simonb.... great kit. Rubbish decals. Decals were replaced with those provided in the Topcolors book "P-38 Lightning at War". Stars and bars were replaced from the spares box. Eduard etch belts and cockpit details brought it to life inside the greenhouse and true detail wheels added some weight to the airframe. Master turned barrels sharpened up the nose. Painted with Tamiya Olive Green and neutral grey, toned down a tad with white. Tamiya flat yellow for the cowls and gunze for the stripes. One of those beautiful ugly planes.... Chris

Hi all, Yes I'm another with a valiant on the go, but it's thrown up some questions regarding markings.... To be a bit different from the kit decals, I have the airdecal valiant part 1 sheet. I'm looking to build XD816 as she was at Marham in 1962. I have the aerofax book and there are lots of colour pics of her after she was resparred in the mid 60s, but none of earlier. What I do have in the instructions is that she may have had the low vis roundels and serials on the fuselage, but high vis roundels on the upper surfaces. Is this correct? Also would she have had the low vis or black serials underneath?? I'm much confused!

Looking good! My hasegawa lightning I started this week is in exactly'the same position like yours the booms arent a great fit, but all fixed now. Have you decided on a scheme? Mine will be a P38-J of the 55th FS/20th FG. "California Cutie" Olive Drab over Neutral grey with full D Day stripes.....

My next project is the Hase J version. Ultra cast do a whole set of different types of P-38 tyres/wheels, master do turned brass cannons. As for decals there are some out there. Check hannants. I've ordered the topcolors "lightning at war" book, and that comes with decals too

I'm working on this at the mo. The instructions shall we say are a little vague. But it's quite easy to figure out. What scheme?....

Thanks again for all the comments The camo colours are Dark Slate Grey and Extra Dark Sea Grey. Both xtracrlix. I did do some faded postshading by adding some drops of white, but it doesnt really show up in the pics.

Thank you for the kind words

Hi everyone, Was sifting through the stash the other week for the next project, and buried deep was eduards dual combo FAA Hellcat set. I've always fancied building the 800NAS scheme, but the invasion stripes always scared me away....however i bit the bullet and here are the results. Painted with Xtracrylix, Tamiya and Gunze for the stripes. Weathered with Flory Models dark dirt and tamiya weathering packs Varnished with Xtracrylix Flat Etch set in the cockpit as supplied with the kit. Superb kit, the second eduard kit i've built. Refined detailing and great value... Chris

Thanks for the comments! It's the second italeri tonka I've built. To be honest I think it's a great kit although maybe lacking the detail found in more recent kits. Only fit issues I found myself were the air brakes if you want them closed, and the leading edge extensions. The way I've found around this is to attach each half to the upper and lower rear fuselage halves first. The front join is a lot easier to tidy..... -
Hi everyone, well its been 3 months without building anything... however i think the mojo is back at last!!!! 1/48 Italeri F3 Paragon Burner cans, wheels, fin correction, pylons, Mk X seats Flightpath Hindenburgers Master Pitot Tube Eduard Etch Gunze paints MA decal sheet..... Chris

Only back in the game for 4 years, but: My 1/48 Sea Vixen Beautiful aircraft. Great kit, and my family deHavilland links may make me biased! I also have a thing for my rotary collection too! -
Thanks for that... I thought it was the two tone. Looking forward to playing about with the different panel shades as well! Any help with the delineation of the greys on the rear fuselage? I think the dsg extends down the curved top until the "shelf" if you see what I mean? The 1/32 gr7 has arrived, and a quick look through shows it's really not that bad! A little fettling and it'll be fine! I see it even has the frog eye inlets for those GR9's that still had the 65% LERX.... Still I need to wait for a decent bang seat... I'm pretty sure ZD404 remained a GR7A incidentally.... And in retrospect never got the MSG finish....

Hi everyone, I have conflicting references for the scheme worn by ZD404 'Lucy'... The datafile on RAF harriers states the later Medium Sea Grey overall, but here I've seen it should be Dark Sea Grey over Dark Camoflage Grey... Which is correct? I intend building her when she wore 800NAS markings during 2009 along with the mission markings. If it is the two tone where is the delineation down the rear of the fuselage? I think the tail fin is the camo greybrathervthan the dsg? Thanks in advance Much confused Chris
