  1. Thanks @Fat fingers Thanks and I know, not the best design for a castle- should i add a drawbridge at the end of the causeway to improve it? Thanks @Major_Error and @dnl42. I'd say the scale is around 1:1080. This is based on a pic that showed 6 uruks on a ladder on the deepening wall. We all know that the average uruk is 1.8m tall giving a wall height of 10.8m verses my 1cm high wall!
  2. Hi all, something a little different for me. I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings and really liked the look of the Helm's Deep fortress in the film so thought I'd have a go at making my own mini version! I only started this on the weekend but quickly got adsorbed and it just flew by so here's where i'm at after two days: The plan: And we're off Couldn't resist this shot looking down the deepening wall: Some plaster to simulate the stone work: A biro for the hornberg: plaster rock and clay added: And finally some balsa added to form the sides. I'll add more clay and wood filler to bring the terrain into the balsa. Almost done on the building part now, just the main gate doors to be added.
  3. excellent build! Looks great particularly the exhaust staining-the gradient is perfect
  4. Sorry only just seen this question- Dark earth was 5:1 XF49:XF52 and desert yellow was a mix of XF59 and XF3 (sorry i didn't make a note of the ration but i would guess maybe 8:1???)
  5. thank you, yes that area isn’t the best. Lots of sanding and filling so a lot of the raised ribbing detail is lost
  6. All your extra work has paid off beautifully! Looks great, definitely intimidated by trying an Italian aircraft due to the paintscheme- no way my airbrushing skills are up to this yet
  7. Thanks again all for taking the time to leave a comment. Always nice to read them and a nice way to 'complete' the build!
  8. Thanks again all. Thanks Bruce, it was your comment about the exhausts that meant i had a proper look. In fact until you mentioned that you didn't feel that the stain followed the wing shape I hadn't realised that it WAS the wing shape and therefore the way the airflow passed over it that governed the stain pattern. Penny dropped!!! Seems obvious now... so thanks for filling in another knowledge gap!
  9. I think it looks great. Really smooth paint finish and agree it looks ace grey/green. Canopy doesn’t look too bad from the pics, don’t think I’d have noticed if you hadn’t mentioned it
  10. What a beauty, great paint work esp on the wavy demarcation line and the waterline weathering.
  11. Thanks all for your comments. @Troy Smith Thanks for the heads up on the very shiny metal looking wood effect I've achieved on the prop... I'll go back and paint it back to black, easy enough as I haven't glued it on. I think I've got the pattern of the oil slicks ok but agree it could be thicker. Thanks again for the info, i do want it looking as good as i can make it.
  12. Hi all, here's the latest off the bench- Hasegawa's Tankbuster Hurricane. Picked this one up off @Julien a while back with lots of extra goodies including Mastercaster exhausts and wheels, Blackbird decals, resin 40mm's, Basic line harness and masks to which i added a Squadron vac form canopy so i could display it open. I've always wanted a tankbuster version so made up to have finished it and have it sitting proudly in the cabinet. Went with old BP188 from No.6 squadron and have shown it just back from a sortie with the gun covers shredded and oil leaking everywhere! Tried a new approach for the fabric gun covers by cutting out a couple of squared from some very thin self adhesive foil and then poking holes though and painting them. They're a touch too thick and rumpled but think they look ok. Really pleased with the paintwork, the azure blue is MRP and rest Tamiya. I tried something i'd seen someone else do on here (I'm sorry i can't remeber who!) but i copied and pulled off the scouring pad from a sponge and teased it apart to use as a highlight/distressing mask. I've got the Uschi splatter masks but think the scouring pad method is much more random and effective (plus you can bend it into those corners much more easily) so will be using this on my next build. I've definitely over weathered the reverse sides of the prop but all those forward operating strips in the desert wouldn't have done them much good I'm sure! Thanks to @Troy Smith and @pacificmustang for some guidance on a few details and for providing some inspiration! Thanks Graeme Spotted after i took this that some black pigment had made its way on to the side- luckily managed to wipe it off before it smudged in!
  13. This really is incredible, I'm amazed at how neat all your PE work is, i can't see a single blob of glue on any of the railings (or anywhere for that matter!). Thanks for letting us have a look
  14. Hi Lummy, I've just taken my first steps into making sea bases (link to the build here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235107031-hms-kelly-a-britmodeller-hattrick/#comment-4357653) All i can say is have a bit of a google of chris flodberg (http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/users/Chris-Flodberg/user-index.html) for some inspiration and look on youtube for Studio Blue and Ebrion's Miniatures, both have excellent videos on how they achieve their bases.
  15. Thanks @Troy Smith for the info and link-very useful with some pics i hadn't seen before Thanks for confirming the light @pacificmustang, this was perfect timing as I was just about to get on with painting! Great model again, I'll be using this as a bit of reference for mine! Graeme
  16. Looks great, know what you mean about the iid, think they look the business. I’m on with the hasegawa 1/48 kit now. I’ve spotted that this only has a landing light on the port wing, my kit has both- which is correct!???
  17. Great job, so much to look at in this compact scene. The lettering on the tank also looks really nice (I'm assuming you've painted this on by hand!)
  18. Ditto! I'd love to know how to do rivets properly. Great modelling as always Fuad!
  19. My first thought was 'that's nicely painted' and then i read your comment that it was brush painted! Great job, I wouldn't even know where to begin to get a result like that!
  20. Thanks @Notty, glad I managed to fool you with that first pic!
  21. thanks Pete, first time I’ve tried this outdoor lighting lark with a model. It makes it look pretty convincing, even if I did need to photoshop out the odd tree branch and telephone line!
  22. Thanks @Bertie Psmith, @Maginot and @Wulfman. I agree, even if they would have spent most of their time on the ground its where they are meant to be.
  23. Another cracker, the weathering is superb.
  24. Hi all So here's my second take on a Malta Spitfire VC, this time with the new Eduard kit (all OOB except for some metal gun barrels, the spinner and left over decals from my previous Special Hobby build). I went for BR112, 185 Sq flown by Claude Weaver III. Weaver became the youngest Allied fighter ace but sadly didn't live to see it end after being shot down over France in 1944 after successfully escaping captivity and making it back into the war. I got myself a copy of the Colour Conundrum Compendium articles by Paul Lucas who depicts BR112 in Extra Dark Sea Grey and Dark Slate Grey with a Sky underside. I wanted to display this flying for two reasons really: - A spit just looks soooooo much better this way. - By raising it up it meant that I could fit it on the same shelf with two parked aircraft in my display cabinet (If i carry on doing this i can do another 3 models before having to convince my wife we need a new cabinet!). The lettering on the birch disc was the only thing useable from the montex masking set up bought for this project-all the rest were really warped, apparently this happens to old vinyl masks.. . The spinner was simply made by cutting out some thin 0.25mm evergreen clear sheet and scoring it with a compass point. I think its fairly effective, its only when the light hits from certain directions and the glossy shine/reflections spoil the illusion. Any tips for achieving the same effect welcomed-I'll be doing more in flight models! Weathering consisted of a flory wash, oil rendering and stains and a good stipple of ground up pastels for the dust effect. Overall very happy with it, but i really need to get better at attaching and masking canopies more neatly... Anyway on to some pics, hope you like it and thanks for looking. Graeme
