Spitfire, not unusual given the Biggen Hill Heritage two seaters are always about

I keep getting adverts on internet pages for a company that provides rides in Spitfires.  One of the photos they use shows a pair of two seat Spitfires in flight.  The other photo shows... well...  a Hurricane.

  2. I'm giving a lot of thought as to what I should build for this GB.  After all, there's not really much scope, is there?!?!?  :fool:

I'm currently building the Gresley A4 Mallard in the Golden Age of Transport GB.  This is being built from bits and pieces taken from the spares and scrap boxes.  It's going quite swimmingly.  :)

For this GB I'm considering another Gresley pacific design, again built from bits and pieces.  Obviously it will be an A1 or A3.  But...   I will be avoiding TLTSNBN.  @Mjwomack will be pleased.  :)

Instead, I think it should be the first A1, Great Northern.   And to make things more interesting it should be in GNR livery.  That means chassis and frames painted in red brown and an original tender with coal rails.

Anyhow, do the little lovelies have names and numbers allocated yet?

Strangely (but I am) I like the extra powerful lines of the prenaming, no yellow 2 tone green (unsubtle hint)

    Wot?  Like this one?

It is, of course, the beautiful Accurascale model.

The green one is likely to be D9006 The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry.   Which always reminds me of the famous football score read out on a Saturday evening on the BBC. "Fife: four.  Forfar: five."

Dunno about the blue one as I haven't yet found a photo of one with a white cab and headcodes.

  4. The wheels and lower hull were primed using grey plastic car primer from a rattle can.  The hull interior was sprayed black, also from a rattle can.  I then sprayed them all with Vallejo 71.056 Dunkelgrau. The next step was to paint the tyres with Tamiya XF-85 rubber black.   The tyres looked good while the paint was wet but once it had dried there was precious little contrast.  Once weathered, you won't be able to tell that the tyres were painted, so I might as well not have bothered.   But at least I know that I did it right. :smartass:

The running gear was then built up.

  5. The disruptive pattern was masked using my usual technique of Blutak worms and masking tape squares sealed with Copydex.

The disruptive pattern was sprayed with Xtracrlix XA1001 Dark Green.  The undersurfaces are Lifecolor UA-626 Blue 5-N.  I used Tamiya XF-69 for the anti-glare panel which just served to highlight that I haven't filled the scar from the sprue gates properly.  I still need to paint the dielectric panel on the fin tip.

  6. I eventually bit the bullet and bought a jar of Railmatch 622 Garter Blue enamel paint, which arrived today.  I'm now re-learning enamel spraying techniques which I haven't used in over thirty years.   The enamel needs to be thinned a lot more than the acrylics that I am used to using but it keeps its colour. It also doesn't have issues with surface tension, like heavily thinned acrylics do.  Let's just hope that it doesn't take from now until Easter to dry...

I have also been reminded just how much thinners are needed to clean an airbrush properly.  You don't notice it with acrylics as the thinner is just water.

  7. I masked the cabs and sprayed the main body colours.  The green is Lifecolor UA-814 BR Loco Green (late) as used on diesel and electric locos.  Lifecolor produce Sherwood Green as UA-823 but I didn't have any so used Tamiya XF-004 yellow green instead.  This is almost an exact match for the Sherwood Green used on Accurascale models.

For the Rail Blue, I used Lifecolor UA-7016 Phantom Blue.

I'm aware the white cab area is incorrect on the blue loco.

The grey roof on the green engine was masked and sprayed with Xtracrylix XA1003.  It needs some touch ups.

I adjusted the cab area on the blue loco and then sprayed the engine covers with Lifecolor UA-813 Rail Blue.  In my opinion this is too dark for overall use (hence the use of Phantom Blue), but it works well to give a bit of contrast in some areas.

  8. Windscreen fitted and masked.

I primed the model with clear lacquer from a rattle can followed by a coat of grey plastic primer, also from a rattle can.

I then sprayed Xtracrylix XA1004 Dark Sea Grey.

It's quite concerning as almost all the British Xtracrylix colours are out of stock and have been for some time.  I hope they are back in stock soon as I am running quite low.  😮

  9. The undercarriage was a nightmare!  :yikes:    Each of the main units needs to be built up from five resin parts.  I had major doubts about whether the gear would actually hold the model up (spoiler alert: it does, but the model wobbles around like a newborn gazelle.  It won't be sat on its gear for long periods.)  Don't look too closely at the completed main units as I superglued the wheels together simply to provide a bit of structural integrity.

The yellow rudder was sprayed with Fiat Broom Yellow from a rattle can and then masked.  The red areas were also sprayed from a rattle can, this time in generic red, and masked.   I have a nice ridge from the yellow paint running across the fin so I am in the process of polishing it away with 800 grade wet and dry.

I'm going to paint the colourful stripes.  I sprayed the yellow from a rattle can of Fiat Broom Yellow, then masked it - as always acknowledging the sheer insanity of masking yellow paint with yellow tape.  :D   A coat of red, again from a rattle can and some more masking.  This was a bit easier.   It is just now waiting for the black.
