  1. Hey Guys, I've just bought a VW Beetle model to build but rather than painting it to look mint I want to make it a rusty wreck, I've been watching quite a few you tube videos on weathering techniques and I think I can work out how to go about it, just wondering if someone can answer a couple of (what I'm sure are stupid) questions. 1. If I spray rust colour onto the model first do I then need to varnish or clear coat before spraying a colour coat on which will be 'chipped off' 2. I've seen the glue method where what looks like pva glue is dabbed on then scrubbed off with a toothbrush or is it better to use hairspray 3. Do I need to clear coat once I've done the chipping/rust effects so I can pick out details with pin washing or should I do that before the weathering 4. There is a plethora of you tube videos is there a really good step by step guide anywhere? I'm not totally inexperienced in modelling but I've not done any weathering before so I'd be extremely grateful for any help, I've got a Harder and Steinbeck infinity plus airbrush and twin piston compressor to airbrush with, and I'm happy to use any paints I've used Tamiya paints and mig or are there any that are better suited? Thanks in advance Chris

  3. Ok, so my mum got me this kit for Christmas and I'm just about to start it but as I am a relative newbie I need to ask a couple of questions. 1. I'm trying to get better at airbrushing the paint on, I need to buy Tamiya colours can I use the colours straight from the pot or do I need to thin them down? if so what should I thin them with? I need to use Gloss and Matt acrylics. 2. Are Tamiya paints any good or would I be better using Vallejo or MiG Ammo? I realise this is personal preference and therefore subjective but I want to use my airbrush as much as possible so I can get more skilled in using it. 3. Do they make any larger size bottles than 10ml? I was looking to buy them from Hobbies but they only supply 10ml bottles, can anyone reccomend other suppliers? (if that's allowed) Thanks in advance for any help, I will look to post some pictures as I work my way through Chris
  4. Hi fellow modellers I'm currently building a 15th Century Korean war ship and throughly enjoying it its from a kit which is written in Chinese and translated to English, so the instructions can be somewhat challenging sometimes. My question is; is there anything I can use to fill small gaps ie 1-2mm gaps?
  5. Upon re-reading this I notice I mention dioramas quite a lot, although I think that will be a few models time, even if I could just do a car crash scene to start, is it awkward to manipulate the models to look effectively accident damaged, I also absolutely love the weathering rusty looks but imagine its a fairly difficult thing to make it look realistic.
  6. Ok so my first couple of car models are not great, coupled with that the first one was dropped and ended up fairly bashed up. My thought is to turn them both into a diorama of a car crash, has anyone done anything similar and is it something I'll need a lot more experience to make look realistic? I've recently come back to modelling after dabbling as a kid, I've found the plastic models enjoyable, but if I'm honest I'm not happy with the end result, I've looked through some of the pictures on the diorama forum of fellow modellers who have built models of say a barn find vehicles, I'd love to do something along those lines or a junkyard/car crash scene, I'm guessing I'm going to need a lot more experience first.
  7. Thank you to all of you for your help, I will definitely look into the clear PVA for the clear gluing, I'm enjoying trying to find what works for me, I've also after watching a few youtube videos realised that my airbrush cleaning was under par, and I'd also been trying to apply th coats too thickly (damn my impatience) so I'm learning all the time!
  8. So I'm reasonably new to modelling and I'm really enjoying it. I'm still struggling to get good results with my airbrush and brush painting is getting a little better, so car I've done a Shelby Mustang and I'm just putting together the last of my '58 Corvette Roadster. So questions for my fellow modellers; 1. Annoyingly I have got a little bit of the glue onto the clear plastic windscreen then I made the fatal error of putting my finger in it ....so I now have a slightly cloudy finger print on my windscreen, can I do anything about that? Or do I need to chalk it up to experience? 2. Both kits have been Revell and both have had flaws, the Corvette's Chassis was twisted so much the car rocks, I've tried weighting it down I even glued the chassis to the underside of the cockpit just to try and take the wobble out and although it's slightly better it is disappointing, are Tamiya kits any better or is it just I've been unlucky? 3. What are people's opinions on paint I've still got a few pots of revell colours left but I've used mig paints with my airbrush and I've been reasonably impressed with them, thinking I should switch it all to mig any thoughts on this? I realise it's all subjective I would just like to glean information from experienced modellers so I can improve the quality in my finish, that being said I also know my first few models will probably look like a dog's been playing with them lol. Any help comments grately received Many thanks Chris
  9. You're right it is my black gloss top coat, think I'll try the tamiya, thinking to switch paints anyway because I started with revell bought a load of paint but theirs is like the smallest range 🤦🏻‍♂️
  10. Damn it ......this'll be the second strip down..... I didn't like the previous colour had no issues like this mind
  11. Ok so to clarify it had X1 coat of primer Rubbed down Second coat of primer Rubbed down First coat of black Rubbed down Second coat of black, this is when I've had the reaction you can see in the picture, the primer I used was from Tamiya and the black is Plasticote having said that the second coat of black was with a different can, do you think that's what had caused it to react?
