Exceptional decals is a bit excessive: the printing quality may be good (sometimes very good) but the accuracy of many of their sheets is debatable and often the stencils are oversized so being much more visible than they should be. Latest sheets seem to have improved but all the Sea Harrier sheets I've seen were best replaced with aftermarket items

    I stand corrected.

  2. The ESCI 1/72 Harrier GR.1, GR.3, Sea Harrier, F-5s, and F-100s are all very good kits and are occasionally reissued by Italeri with exceptional decals.  I stress the 1/72 versions.

The changes from the D to H series were extensive. The only PB4Y-1 we are likely to see from Airfix will be based on the B-24J (very likely just Ford-built). Likewise, the only RAF versions will be GR.VI and B.VI based on the H or J. I'm afraid if the Hasegawa or Academy D offerings don't cut it, then you may be waiting for a very long time.

That is the beauty of this site, B-24 expertens to guide the way.  Hasegawa B-24D it is.

  4. My dad was a crewmember on PBMs with VP-49 in the late 1940s.  I built this Mach 2 kit for him as a labor of love.  I spent hours trying to make the clear parts "clear."  Decals cobbled together from various Microscale sheets.  I got it done but I will never again touch another Mach 2 kit.  Which is a shame since they do interesting subjects.

100%. I work in the movie VFX industry, and all realistic CG work includes a "HDRI" reflection to make it look like it's in the real world. That reflection is something that's missing in an indoor photoshoot. You get that for free outdoors with real models, so it's a no-brainer. You do need an open space though with maximum sky visibility.

I shoot all my models in outdoor light.  I didn't know the technical reason why they looked better, but they do:

  6. Fun fact:  When I was a teen with the Explorer Post at Hill AFB in the early 1970s, we got to fly on a Utah ANG KC-97L.  Jake Garn, mayor of Salt Lake was the pilot.  Don't recall his rank (probably 05 or 06) or the tail number of the bird, so I do not know if it is the one depicted in this kit.  Garn later went on to be a Utah senator and flew on the Shuttle Discovery.

We now return you to your previously scheduled Academy newsletter coverage.

And where would they get that from? Airfix? I can't really see that happening, can you?

If you don't like the kit, don't buy it, but please stop moaning before you have even seen it. It's depressing.

At least they made an effort and you could always use the add-on parts in the awful Classic Airframes kit (yes, I have built one).
