Lovely piece of work with a very convincing seascape, congratulations, nailed it !!

Still plodding on, it seems to be a phase of lots of bits and pieces as I detail up the superstructure, and finally plucked up courage to tackle the mast. I'm starting to collect a fair pile of bits now, though somehow the further I get the longer the to-do list gets, this 1/200 (or bigger) milarky is turning out to be seriously labour intensive !! I also managed to fit one of the home made Scimitar canopies, though it is still missing its framing I am considering it a successful proof of concept, and will get on with mass production when I have a bit of time. After a bit of a mis-start on the mast I decided to use the photo_etch from the orel paper kit as a basis, though it all needed to be separated into individual panels because in its original "ready to bend" state some of the zigs in the lattice structure were supposed to be zags (if you get what I mean), plus I had to make the all of wiring conduits and platforms inside the structure, which means that the sides are currently removeable. This one is going to go on for some time as it is all very complicated, not least getting a crisp paint line between grey and black through all of the mast components, going to be a bit of colourful language reserved for the masking of that methinks !! Anyway best wishes to all, and thanks for looking ! Cheers David

This is really looking good with a dash of paint on it, the level of detail that you have on this is just right, very convincing !! looks like its come from a recruitment office window many years ago, lovely job π Cheers David

Blimey Colin, now you are talking !! There was a time, not so long ago, when I felt that my 4ft carrier was probably enough evidence for the family to have me committed, suddenly I feel sane again, what with huge carriers popping out of the woodwork all over the world, I realise now that I am a mere speck in the presence of such magnificent madness, that sir,...is beautiful Cheers David with carrier envy

That, sir is magnificent !! I am drawing comfort from realising that there are people madder than myself out there, what a beast, ...and beautifully done, will you finish it as an immaculate builders type model, or as slightly worn and weathered ? Cheers David -

Really good to see this magnificent beast back on the boil again Mike π -
Very impressive piece of work, and I thought my carrier was too big !!

Dear god, that is huge, !!! its nice to know that there is someone out there even crazier than I am, bravo, and congratulations π

That is absolutely superb in every way, I particularly like the way you have captured the real look of a wooden deck, more of a warm grey than anything else, simply brilliant maestro Cheers David- 134 replies

This is looking really good Jeff, the weathering is spot on and that together with your riveting plus the level of detail in your "gribbly bits" is making it look more like a fully loaded 1/72 model imho ! Cheers David

It really was enormous Bertie, and thank you, if you look at film of the ship at sea it rotates surprisingly quickly, I gather it was actually very good and was considered world beating at the time, though a little on the complex side !! Thanks Stuart, I've still got quite a bit of gribblification before I squirt it (and much more after Ive masked and sprayed the pendant number), but I must admit to looking forward to seeing it in something other than primer !! πThank you John, Though I must confess that I am not intending to go overboard with the inside bits, just enough to make it look like there is something going on in there, I dont think that it will be very visible to be honest, but it looks like an empty office block at the moment ! Thanks Ian, its a bit of a slow burner as a project, now entering its fourth year, though I have invested so much time and effort in it now I dare not shelve it even temporarily, but really there are so many varied sub assemblies that each one is a months long project in its own right, so its difficult to get bored !! I notice that you have a love of Lotus cars on your profile, I have recently retired, but for the last few years was tasked with supporting Lotus Design from our Geely studio in Barcelona on bits of the Evija, Emira and the initial concept work for the Eletre, also got to meet Clive Chapman and a guided tour of Classic Team Lotus, happy days !!! Alun, thank you, but I fear that 1/72 brings its own problems, I didnt realise how much additional detail is required when going from 1/350 to 1/200, particularly now everyone is used to a level of detail that has been raised to excruciating heights by companies such as Pontos and Blackcat (to name a couple of culprits) . I have been following your work closely, and its magnificent what you are doing, the work required in 1/72 is exponentially more than I have to deal with, so I in turn salute your fiddly bits Hi Les, yes you are right, I think its just sheer laziness on my part, I spent years with graphic and 3D modelling programs, so I try to avoid them if I can now I dont have to do it as a job, but I really should extract my digit and get on with it !! I have ordered some decal paper and intend to have a go, I will keep everyone posted on my "journey" (when I have managed to raise some enthusiasm) maybe this task will actually get me starting the lattice mast, to avoid working on a computer π Thanks Chewy I will certainly try that, also have a go at your trick with white (ordered some white decal paper too), love the jetstream !! I remember getting taken around Scottish Aviation at Prestwick and seeing them being built when dad was CO at Gannet, I seem to remember that they were doing something to Starfighters there as well, but i dont remember what !! Thanks John, yes, a hell of a thing, and very complicated to make, one could maybe abbreviate it a bit in a smaller scale, but there is nowhere to hide in 1/200 π You are so right, it looks like it was originally meant to be at the same height as the bridge, but someone decided to make it higher quite late in the game....or of course someone misread the drawings and refused to accept that they had made a mistake π It was added to in subsequent refits and looked (imho) even more cobbled together in her later years !! Thanks for all of your support, Id better go and do something on it now !! Cheers David

Hi Rob, 4mm is what I need for the under wing codes, if you could have a look I would be very grateful !! Just a quick update, I have managed to beat FLYCO into submission, wot with all the hand and foot-rails, the former being 1/32 bobs buckles with 0.25mm brass wire, the foot-rails, being tiny styrene triangles with stretched sprue on top, would I want to do it again ?....as someone witty once said "I would rather be the love toy of a Greek army battalion" π The radar is now sitting at the correct height, and I've added the railings to the platform, so its all starting to look a bit more convincing I think !! I'm going to have to think about the interiors soon, as the idea is to paint the bridge and flyco area before glazing it all and adding the inside bits Those with sharp eyes will notice that I have cleverly captured the slightly wibbly nature of those on the real ship, it was tough, as of course they wanted to be perfectly straight !!! (that was heavy sarcasm btw) but the real ones really were rather wibbly so a touch of serendipity I think !! And positioned on the big bit itself Anyway thanks for looking, onwards and upwards !! Cheers David

What a magnificent beast Jeff, there is something about the warships of this era that I find fascinating, I have a little itch in the back of my brain telling me that after Victorious an Iron Duke or one of Beatty,s "splendid cats" would be fun in 1/200, (and unlikely to be kitted), seeing your work on this isn't helping the madness !! Cheers David

Ha Alun, I fully identify with that point. Glad I'm not the only one here who finds running model boat kind of boring and the compromises required for access and robustness etc can spoil the finish of an otherwise splendid model. Rudders in particular don't scale down very well, so its OK if you don't want it back Great model coming together here I feel like that, if it was possible to sail it in scale water then maybe, but for me it just makes it look more like a model, bit like 1/35 Tiger tanks photographed on lawns, π This is looking really impressive btw, Cheers David

Hi Jon, looking very smart, I think that the red and white checks came out very well, a very good looking vessel looking forward to see how you tackle the seascape, Im starting to worry about mine already π Cheers David -
Thank you Steve I will certainly check it out, I will have to try and get Photoshop and Inkscape up and running again !! Hi Colin, many thanks for the heads up, I will certainly check that out ! Oh no you wont Jeff I am tempted to ask if you think that I am stupid, but after fighting recalcitrant microscopic handrails yesterday, I think I should keep my head down, as I think I may well be a little "challenged " in certain quarters π Cheers David
-
Thanks Stuart, onward and upward as they say !! I got a selection of generic markings with the white metal kits, and so far am just cobbling it together, funny you should mention it but alongside fighting the hand and foot rails on FLYCO, I've just now been dressing up the Scimitar, come to a grinding halt on the underwing codes though, I may have to have a go myself !! Cheers David

Actually Bertie its a bit trial and error with me, I'm always going back to things and either pulling them apart and having another go, or carrying out endless loops of corrective surgery until I cant take it anymore and have to accept it for what it is, I'm all over the place with wood, its more difficult to bodge π And to you Mike, lets hope it is a good one this time, I'm hoping that I can make some serious progress on "the project" without too many distractions from house stuff !! though I may well go a little bit Bertie at some point as I got a wooden kit (Corel) of a Llaut (pronounced lyout) which is a local Balearic traditional fishing boat, shouldn't have too much of a problem with references as I can see three of them at the moment !! Dear John, lets hope so, I am rapidly getting to the mast, I dont think that I can avoid it for much longer, now I seem to recall that you did one in 1/350 that appeared to have been constructed by trained spiders, certainly not by human hand, .......can I borrow them ? π π Thank you....... but you can talk ! What with your modesty coupled with a project that is a dead ringer for a builders model, and really should end up at Greenwich, honestly, when I grow up I want to be like you Steve !!! Thanks Ant, I wish that I shared your confidence, I may have to start lighting candle, drawing pentagrams and sacrificing chickens before commencing π Beefy, thank you, I am going to try to make a bit more progress this year, this new year will be the fourth, so I need to hurry up if Im going to do anything else with my life π Thank you !! We know................ dont we fellow traveller ? π Too bloody right Rob, it was enormous, it must have been a terrible distraction having something the size of a largish house whirling around at the top of the ship, I asked dad about it and he said that after the initial "well I never" people just got used to it and forgot it was there !! πJeff, dont tell me that you like being whipped with wet spaghetti in a bath of Swarfega as well !!!!!!!!!!!! Certainly not boring !!! Thanks Colin, I will get there, there is too much time invested in this now to stop, if I have a little lapse in enthusiasm I just get all the bits and put it all together, that normally does the trick, as it actually is starting to be recognisable as Victorious now !! Thanks Crispin, I wouldn't want to do another one !! Nice to see the Ark back on the slipway, I will catch up with you if your not careful π πThere is only one RN paint Jedi master and he is a wee bit north of the border, though it may be necessary to get litre at least (I wonder how many tinlets that is ? I think you are right !! In an effort to avoid the mast I've just painted a Scimitar π Cheers David
