Flying "Little Snake"; VPAF MiG 17F (Shenyang J-5)
Luka replied to Luka's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Thanks all! 🙏 Thanks! I tried Vallejo chipping medium first, but that didn't really work for me. It was probably the way I approached it. In the end I used Maskol on the metallic base, applied with a piece of foam rubber. When the green-green camo pattern was sprayed on, I removed the Maskol with a silicone rubber brush. The exact camo pattern wasn't really discernible on the two grainy reference pics that I could find, so I took some liberty there. Thank you! I glued two strips of styrene to the inner leading edge, filled the gaps with putty and sanded it all into a sharper shape. I have a pictoral build vid on youtube, but it's not allowed to post the direct link here. I actually 'stole' that trick from Meindert de Vreeze, from his online build blog 🤭 Thanks! I found some grainy photos of this jet; one is in the yt build vid I made. The camo pattern indeed seems to be weathered that heavily. I think the famous '3020' depicted in the well known propaganda exhibition photos in fact shows fresh touchups as dark patches in areas that would typically be affected (fin and wing leading edges upper fuselage, etc.). I suppose the climate in Vietnam could take a heavy toll on low quality paint since their metal-finish jets seemed to look just fine! -
Hello Britmodellers, Here's my take on the Airfix MiG 17. I wanted to build a slightly different machine than the famous '3020' so I did some decal juggling there. A few grainy pics show '3012' in a heavily weathered condition. It took me two tries before I ̶g̶o̶t̶ ̶f̶e̶d̶ ̶u̶p̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶i̶t̶ / got the effect somewhat acceptable. Other modifications were the KK-2 bangseat, reshaped inner wing leading edges and brass gun barrels. Thanks for watching! Luka

Dang, I needed those building tips before I finished mine.. Yours looks fantastic for such a tiny kit, nice work! 👍 -
Didn't know this; the more you learn.. But still, the likelihood of it having been an operational machine seems quite slim.

At first I wanted to use a home printer and fix the ink with a spray varnish. Now I'm thinking of searching a print shop that can also print white. The decals need to be multicoloured, so a white backing is important too. Hope this answers your question.

Hello Britmodellers, I've got so many potential modeling projects I couldn't possibly buy/find the necessary decals for them, so I want to try printing some. I found several gauges of decal paper, namely 8 µ (micron) and 13 µ. Apart from the obvious assumption that 8 µ is probably thinner than 13 µ, I don't really know what these numbers mean. Does anyone have any experience with this? For example if a certain thickness equals the one used by a well known brand (e.g. Cartograph). Or if thicker decal film is maybe intended for die-cast models? I'm inclined to choose the thinner variant to conform to the model's shape and surface as good as possible, except when that decal film rips and folds at the merest sigh. Any pointers would be appreciated. Luka

Didn't even notice that yet, but exactly what I mean! What's perfectly acceptable for the average museum visitor in downtown Beijing is not good enough for some styrene-sniffing rivet counter on the other side of the world!😉

Thanks, I have the Osprey books, but as you already noted, they didn't back up the artwork with a photo. I searched for some period Chinese J-6 camo colour pics in, but found very little. Basically just one or two in the often depicted green-brown-sand scheme. I did find a colour photo of a J-6 in the three-tone green scheme at the Datangshan museum, although I'm usually very suspicious about museum paintjobs. But it's the closest I could find. https://www.airliners.net/photo/China-Air-Force/Shenyang-J-6III/702345/L

Hello Britmodellers, Once upon a time, there was supposedly this one Vietnamse MiG 19 (J-6) with a camo pattern (pic linked), number 6066. There are many artist's renditions of this pattern, but I have never seen a single photo of a camouflaged VPAF MiG 19. Does anybody know if a source photo exists? Or is this another case of artists basing their work on another artist's work? Thanks, Luka

Hello Britmodellers, Here's my recent effort to build the old and very basic PM Fokker D.XXI to a more modern standard. Upgrades include: -The ski landing gear was repositioned into a 'loaded' position. -The cowling edge was thinned down and rocker bulges were added. -The engine face was improved with bracing bars. -A new rudder from an MPM D.XXI was installed. -A new Ratier propeller came from the same MPM kit -A new canopy was vacformed and installed. -A scratchbuilt cockpit interior was added. -Navigation lights and a landing light were added from transparent sprue. Thanks for watching! Luka

Hi, There's another method that I have seen, and that is re-using the tin-foil wrappers from chocolates. There's a youtube vid here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrhY6Oixlmc You'd have to be pretty confident with a sharp blade though, as you have to cut the foil while it's on the canopy. The foil is pretty thin though and should cut easily. Plus, it's also much thinner than paper tape so the paint layer won't "heap up" at the edge. Hth, Luka

Hello Britmodellers, Here's another Revell P-47M, reverse-engineered into a D-28-RA. Because all my Thunderbolts had red cowling fronts, I required one with a blue engine cowling. The "Thunderbolts over Germany in Color" documentary on YT was another inspiration. Thanks for looking! Luka

I just finished a Revell P-47 myself, but the level of detail you added to these kits is really something else. I salute your modeling skill! 👍

Seasoned green things Britmodellers 🌟 I recently finished this Revell bubbletop Thunderbolt, Hamilton prop and rocket tubes came from an Academy Razorback. Thanks for watching! Luka

Thanks for your reactions!🙏 Thanks! And yes, the HB kit has many points of attention.. The sprue shots of the Wolfpack kit look very promising! I hope the it will be somewhat affordable though; I recently saw the Dream Model F-5E priced at a ludicrous 45€ 🤪

This is the Eurofighter from Revell's '60 Jahre Luftwaffe' set, but in its regular uniform without the festive decals. Thanks for looking! Luka

I was initially a bit skeptical about the Academy kit, knowing about its accuracy issues. But you corrected all of these with great skill! Very impressive result 👍👌

Basically built this Starfighter for its striking experimental blue scheme. Thanks for watching Luka
