Hi Guys I rather fancy having a go at a Centurion Mk12 Artillery OP tank like the one I commanded in 1972 with N Bty, 2 Fd Regt RA in 1972. Can anybody advise where would be the best place to start? Ive had a look on Scalemates and Im a bit baffled. I'm thinking possibly one of the IDF variants??? Eddie

A NOSTALGIC TRIBUTE TO FROG MODEL KITS
Edwin Parks replied to adey m's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Bit off the piste, but does anyone have any idea where I can find examples of the Frog Ready to Fly aircraft, particularly the Intercepter series in foreign markings. This is a real return to childhood since when i was about 7/8 years old I really wanted one but never actually managed it. A few weeks ago I saw one on eBay and am rehooked! Would anybody care to identify this vehicle. Said to be WW2 TJFF. But the badge of the door and the cap badges and uniforms look like Arab Legion to me??? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jordan-Arab-transjordan-photo-portrait-1944-WW2-TJFF-army-military-Bedouin-RARE/164261939286?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Has anybody ever come across a kit which could be the basis of a 1/35 British army Ford Station wagon/staff car as used in the Western Desert and captured and used by the Africa Korps?
-
Thank you all. Im going to look at the Operation Salam vehicles, but in the meantime I'll be doing this as the Sonderkommand Dora version. https://www.scalemates.com/kits/tamiya-35305-steyr-type-1500a-01--133296

Thank you, that's a great link.

I have to confess that my knowledge of the Africa Korps is close to zero. BUT I would like to build a suitable German vehicle to go with my SAS, LRDG, Italian Saharian etc vehicles. I do know that the Germans did at least attempt an end run to deliver agents into Cairo and did operate some SAS hunting groups but no more than that really Can members suggest a suitable vehicle??

Hi Guys, I am planning on extending my WW2 desert vehicles into less well know places and I wonder if any body has any experience of these two companies and in particular these kits? https://hobbymodels.com/products/mzz-35107 http://blitz-kit.fr/vehicule/538-laffly-s15-r-ffl.html The Blitz kit is much more expensive but does include some after market stowage as well. There are also some figures which match. Any opinions welcome

I'm wondering if anybody knows what vehicles were used by the French mechanised comprised which fought the Arab Legion in the East of Syria in the early years of WW2. I am pretty sure they had Fiat SPA TL37 "jeeps" but I'm also pretty sure they must also have had larger armed vehicles. Any ideas anybody. The Arab Legion of course had Ford lorries armed with Lewis guns. Eddie

Hi Guys Any advice. I have searched t'interweb hi and low and followed up any number of dead ends but I can't find any decals for a North African SAS/LRDG Jeep. Not a one. Can anyone advise? It has been put to me that they would have had no markings and indeed would be badly maintained, but as someone who served in the British army for 20+ years I am sure they would have at least had vehicle number markings. As for "badly maintained" I've done deep desert mechanised patrols in the Rub al Khali while serving in the Sultans Armed Forces and I am damned certain their maintenance was 150%! Eddie

Thanks everyone. I think I will have to try and find someone who uses one and take a look in real life. Thanks again.

Hi Guys I need some advice. I've been trundling along slowly with my newly refound enthusiasm for military modelling. All my subjects so far reflect my interest in Arab/Arabian armies ranging from a WW1 Ford Model T to an Arab Legion Marmon Harrington armoured car. For each of these I'e been satisfied with giving the hull/main body a nice spray coat of Destert Yellow from a Vallejo spray tine. But now I want to move on to some of the opposition, in this case an Italian AS 42 Sahariana. The hull colour is of course rather different and with advice here I am down to a choice between a Revell and a Hataka Yellow sand. But of course both are in bottles. So I am looking very tentatively as air brushing but have absolutely no idea how to start. Can any one offer a few absolute beginner tips. For example do I need a compressor or will it work from a canned air bottle. How small a piece can you do, how fine a line??? Presumably there will always be a point when only a brush will do? Thanks Eddie

Thanks again Ive have ordered both the Revell and Hataka paints and Ill see which I like best.

Thanks everybody, all very helpful. Ill now do some more checking around. I have been using Vallejo so would like to stick to that if possible. The Kit is no 6530 which includes a choice of two weapons with a metal barrel for one. Ill also keep looking for figures Eddie

Hi Guys I am sitting looking at an Italeri AS42 Sahariana kit in 1/35. All looks great, but I am concerned about the correct hull colour. Italian Yellow?? The instruction sheet seems to assume you leave the hull in the colour of the plastic so gives no clue to its colour. Ive seen it suggested that Vallejo's Dark Yellow is a pretty good start but Id like to know what anybody thinks. It'll have to be a brush job since I haven't yet ventured into airbrush territory. Also any crew suggestions, I have found an Italian made resin three man kit, but at 42 Euros it would eb more than the kit itself! Eddie

Thanks Guys The photo of the scabbard will come in very useful as I am pretty sure I'll have to go down that route. Thank you. I do have a section of SMLE rifles which will sacrifice their butts to the cause! And those look like lovely cav figures, but I need two scabbards and that route would be far too expensive, but thanks for the tip

Sadly the Tamiya WW1 Infantry set does not include the rifle scabbard, possibly because its cavalry I suppose. Cant find one anywhere. I suppose Ill have to try Black Knights suggestion. Unless, of course, anyone knows differently???
-
Hi Guys I am about to launch on a Light Car Patrol Model T and am collecting up some bits and pieces. Does anyone know where I can find a couple of 1/35 SMLE rifle scabbards? I've searched the net without any success/ Eddie

I commanded a battery of these guns so I am very intimately familiar with every bit of them. We actually had a Chinese version on trial and it is really very different, a built-in traversing platform for one and wheels to help open and close the trails. Egypt gave the Sultanate 12 guns which had been standing on a gun park somewhere for many years. The range was important because with them we could hit the Yemeni base at Habrut from the SAF positions at Sarfait. The Sultan himself felt strongly about this because he had been shelled by Yemeni 130s while visiting troops at Sarfait. They were superb guns although we did have some problems. The sights had to be converted from Soviet mils to Nato mils. We actually used 25pdr sights of which there was a good supply. Sadly somebody blundered in converting the range table and Charge 3 was rather doubtful at certain elevations. They also had solid rubber tires which had a nasty habit of catching fire!

Yet another search for yet another strange model. Once upon a time, when the world was young I had the honour of commanding 8 Medium Battery of the Sultan of Oman's Artillery which was equipped with Soviet M46 130mm guns (at that time the longest ranged artillery piece in service anywhere) towed by huge Kraz 6X6 lorries. I do actually have a model of the combination, but it's tiny, about 3in overall) and I think designed for wargaming?? I wonder if there is or ever was a bigger kit? A search of the WWW does not seem to produce any results in any scale.

Yep, thanks. I wonder why I couldn't find that.

I have a really weird request! Does anybody know of a source for (or have in their spares box) a 1/35 goat, female, smallish no horns no beard! For even looking at this post you deserve a reason! I am modeling an Arab Legion vehicle of 1939/40. Their rations came in the form of live goats with sacks of rice, lentils, and spices. The goat is giving me a problem! Eddie

Thanks Chris that’s very helpful. I’ll investigate
