  1. Lightning in the paint shop! A coat of Mr Surfacing Finisher 1500 diluted with Mr Color Leveling Thinner Looks OK! The scribing mostly survived. Not perfect, but happy with what I got. Next up a very light sanding with 4000 micromesh to prepare the surface, which looks pretty smooth anyway, then AK Extreme Metal Aluminium. Cheers, Charlie
  2. Useful to know... and your other tips. 👍 Decals (last night's) looked good and should be very good when you've got the colour sorted. How did the 1:1 windows go? Is this a restoration or a new kit? These details are very important during a FROG GB - remember Pete's @PeterB wall in the last GB! Cheers, Charlie
  3. In the colour photo of Lightning F2A XN793 'A' 92 Sqn, Biburg, August 72, the blue of the roundels and the spine appears very dark. Reduced Resolution scan. Posted for discussion purposes. Will remove if required. Was it really this dark, or is this a photographic anomaly? I'm modelling this plane and have bought the Model Alliance decals for it. The blue in their roundels is also very dark. I'm thinking of ditching the Model Alliance roundel decals and using lighter blue Xtradecal type D decals which match Colourcoats (and Xracolour) Roundel Blue paint. But, from the photo, maybe Model Alliance got the blue right? Any opinions? Thanks, Charlie
  4. I was wondering why we hadn't heard from you. Looks OK from here (but I'm about 230 miles away! ) I had exactly the same dilemma, and while not trying to unduly influence you, I went for option 3. There are enough other errors on my build to help me ignore the slightly narrow wheels. OK, it's not quite right, but unless you look (or photograph) from head-on, it's not that apparent. Or so I tell myself. Cheers, Charlie
  5. Looks absolutely Great Pete. What you have looks right. New steel bracing wire would surely have been silver/grey? Cheers, Charlie
  6. Love the i/p, great scratch work. Cheers, Charlie
  7. Doesn't surprise me at all. Vacform canopies are great, when they work. Excellent work with your vacforms, with occasional and quite understandable mishaps. That's modelling. I must get round to making a proper vacform rig like yours. I practice the crude technique of smash moulding which is very hit and miss, mostly the latter. Cheers, Charlie
  8. I hope so Dave but its a bit of an unknown until I get some primer on. Thanks, I have hope that the patient may recover! Thanks Dennis, most useful, I know what it looks like now. Not entirely sure that the colour they chose is Dark Admiralty Grey. Maybe it looks different in real life? Thanks Martin. There's hope for the patient yet. I'm glad you can see the lines Adrian, I'm having trouble! All the old raised panel lines I removed years ago are still visible. It's very confusing. There will now be a short pause as Mrs.J has dragged me off to Dartmoor for some difficult walks in the rain. Cheers, Charlie
  9. One of my favourite jets.
  10. Progress... Marking out the engine cover release catches. Scribing the catches... Tailplanes, scribed to the DACO plans and a bit of repair Scribing done! Hooray!! Instrument panel and side consuls added to the cockpit. I've scanned the Airfix (sorry!) F.6 i/p decal which I could use over a Dark Admiralty Grey base, but I might try to find a photo of an actual F.2A i/p which I could reduce and print. Trial fit with the lovely Barracuda Mk.4 injection seat - which didn't fit. The FROG/Hase cockpit being a bit small. Cut the rear bulkhead out to give it more room. As I plan to have the canopy open, I think some gubbins behind the seat may be required. Also scratched something resembling the control column. Next up - primer and NMF. I have Alclad and AK aluminium in the strore, I'm erring towards AK as I recall it being more robust and may withstand the masking. Thanks for looking! Cheers, Charlie
  11. A modeller's got to do what a modeller's got to do! I'd be the same.
  12. Looks good! From this photo, which can be magnified on the IWM webpage, https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205127014, I'm confident that the core colour, which we assume is red (matches the centre of the roundel well) has a thin lighter outline as shown in the very clear photo Dave posted above. From other models, profiles etc, it has been assumed to be white. However, Dave is correct that it doesn't match the white on the roundel or the invasion stripes. It certainly seems to be duller. Whether this is yellow or white - either dulled through weathering or because it's a very thin white line, and the photo/digital scanning is picking up some of the surrounding hues (i.e. the dullness is a artifact) is open to interpretation. White? Yellow? Dull White? I doubt that anyone now can say for sure. Charlie
  13. I was looking for information about the Whirlybird P.1B and came across your build/RFI. Very nice! Good build and display. I may have to buy one! Charlie
  14. Yep, feeling your pain, can completely sympathise. The 'O' was probably the hardest part of my build. Multiple, multiple attempts! In the Exactly how I did it. But I couldn't get a DG/MSG background as I wanted it and ended up cutting out the inside as well. Took several attempts. Patience, good light, magnification (if you've got it or need it - I used powerful reading glasses and my Optivisor) and a new blade. Cutting around the outside of the O in a perfect curve isn't essential, and square corners on the inside doesn't show appreciably at 1/72. I was worried that the decal might be too fragile with the inside of the O cut out, but it transferred and bedded down surprisingly well. As you see, I still have some spares left over. Happy to post them to you if you need. Best of luck, Charlie
  15. Hi David, First of all... your build looks great! Continues to impress! Your attention to detail is admirable. But understandable that a long build like this can be frustrating. Not long to go now. Second, the 3D printed bomber crew. Looking forward to your verdict Adrian. They look very good and we've been waiting a decent bomber crew. Charlie
  16. Some excellent scribing there Jean. It will look very good after a clean up. Charlie
  17. Great modelling Jeff.
  18. That looks really great Troy. There's something about a spinning prop! Charlie
  19. That's most kind of you Pete, many thanks. But, I've just received the Xtradecal Lightning stencils, and the Model Alliance decals that have the Lightning F2.A XN793/A, that I'll be making. The Model Alliance decals RAF Germany during 1970's Pt.1 (printed by Cartograf) look really excellent and currently they're being cleared by Hannants 1/3 off. Well worth a look. Regards, Charlie
  20. I'm glad to see you're getting as carried away with this as I am on my Wessex (and now EE Lightning). Great stuff, keep up the excellent work. Charlie
