Yeah Tim, I seem to recall from somewhere that this is the reboxing of the Aurora/Monogram in the late 60s/early 70s, however I may be wrong lol Cheers Thanks Pete! , I wonder if Revells SE5a is another pigs ear to try and improve, my Camels lonely! Cheers Andy, thanks for all the praise! Cheers Clif , thanks as I feel the paint job is one of the worse bits, marred by tons of copious dust! Cheers Bob , yeah its my first, but probably not my last! And by the way, THANK YOU for the turnbuckles , my rigging wouldnt have been possible without it, great items I will definitely use them again mate! Cheers Daz, I'll get to the results momentarily! Thanks Steve, this is my first rigging attempt, and I'm pleased with it!! Anyway, moving on to the competition. There were around 15 entrants including me, so i was a bit nervous. But somehow I CAME 1ST!!!! I'm so happy!! Had to march out and accept my trophy from my Regional Group Captain, in front of around 500 cadets and 100 adult staff in my wing! Very nerve racking but sooo worth it! Pics of my trophy (don't get to keep it, but still earnt it!): Thanks for everyones kind words! Cheers Tim -

Cheers Tim and Daz, Rigging is SOO frustrating, however it adds that extra realism and is easily worth it. COMPLETE!!!!! RFI here Thanks to everyone who helped me!!! Cheers Tim -
Finally got it done, my Camel has been built to compete for my sqn at Wing Field Day, which is today so my timing is impeccable! Very chunky kit, with fairly low accuracy. But a great beginner biplane build, as this was my first biplane and stringbag. I scratchbuilt most of the cockpit, and some bits for the engine. If you look at the seat you may see the net curtains, simulating the wicker! Kudos goes to my mum for that part, as it was her idea! The decals are from eagle strike (which were excellent), with some from the kit. Rigging was my first time, so please be gentle! Thank you Bobby von Buckle for making this SOOO much easier, cheers mate! WIP thread here Any questions then fire away! This Camel is depicted of that of Lieutenant C M Masters, with the serial of B2407 ‘R’, with its scheme as of mid-1918. Based at Istrana in northern Italy with 45 Squadron RAF, Lieutenant Masters was credited with 8 victories while flying Camels. Note that with this aircrafts letter ‘R’, some artistic license has been taken with the R, the upward stroke being fashioned into a ladies leg. ( The text above is my accompanying text for the competition!) Anyway, pics: Any comments welcome! Thanks to everyone who motivated and encouraged me during this build! cheers Tim

Cheers Tim, and I'm sure you can do a far better job than me looking at your Phantom! My decals arrived on thursday, and are thin and nice to Eagle Strike for this. The one I'm modelling is Lt Masters of 45 sqn RAF, Italy, mid 1918. The decals went on fairly nicely, but the rudder colours were possibly the most frustrating part of the entire build. Both the sides were too small, and I have no perfect match to these colours. So I butchered a spare decal to patch it up. I think it turned out ok. I used a dark grey pastel to simulate the dirt that gets engrained on the doped linen between the ribs, Think it turned out ok, what do u think I also drybrushed the Vickers guns and the step: Touched up the prop and wheels: Matt coated and drying: Onto the rigging tonight, may update later Cheers Tim -
Love it! The checks look AMAZING! The weathering is spot on and the whole thing looks real Nice one! Cheers Tim

Good luck mate! I've heard that the Eduard version is far more accurate than my Revell offering, and I'll definitely be watching this one with interest I've got a couple of links that I've used to aid mine, and you can have them for free! Some reference pics: Linky And a completed Eduard Camel, I used for inspiration but you may want to note what is said about the struts: Linky 2 Good Luck, I'll look forward to this one! Cheers Tim P.S. In Scott Lyles Camel page his camel seems to be missing its pitot tube, is this not supplied with the kit, or is this his error? cheers again mate!

Cheers Jono, I'll have a look into those kits, although the revell offering looks more possible, as I'm a bit low on cash at the moment! Thanks, Tim

WOWSERS!! This is the best Chinook i've seen yet! You were right about the Union Flag, looks awesome! Cheers Tim

Thats one sweet looking jug mate! Cheers Tim

WOW!! Love that mate! Awesome cockpit and folded wings, Cheers Tim

Thats coming along nicely ! look forward to seeing this built. Just a quick question though, after you've applied the maskol, won't it lift off with the tape? Just a thought, may be down to cheaper alternatives I have used Anyway, looking good and good luck! Cheers Tim

I've got a 1/48 Revell Camel in the finishing stages at the moment if anyones interested It's being built for my Wing Field Day on sunday with the ATC. Quite a chunky kit but it has been fun, just to do the favourite bit now, rigging! WIP thread here Cheers Tim P.S. I seem to like these old aircraft , and am wondering if there are any SE5a's in 1/48 about? It would accompany my Camel nicely

Coming along nicely mate What I would recommend for Defiant or any other Boulton Paul modellers, is a trip to the Boulton-Paul Heritage museum in Wolverhampton. Great little museum, and some interesting people to have a chat with. Can't wait to see that finished though! It'll look nice in black me thinks Cheers Tim

Still no decals!!! I have still applied the generic top and bottom wing roundels as they shouldn't differ too much (shoudn't of said that!) They were quite thick, but opaque and strong. Took quite a few coats of Micro-sol before they settled down nicely. Quite a few air bubbles needed to be popped along the wasy as well, but all turned out well in the end: (Oh yeah I had to slice the decals to keep the gap and get them right, easy to to with a scalpel when they are on there and then whack some Microl sol on to get them hugging the curvature) Then I thought I better do something else, and what better than to start everyones favourite of RIGGING!!! VERY VERY frustrating at first but I think I've found a technique that (may) work. I wish I'd though of this before I'd painted it, but hey! I used a hot pin to make a small hole, then CA'd in one of Bob's homemade buckles (lovely by the way! ), Then try and fill the rest of the hole with a small amount of CA, not making a huge pile of it. Then when dry, invisible thread(smoke coloured naturally was passed through, glued at one end and left to set, then repeated for the other end. Excess then can be trimmed off and the areas around the hole can be touched up with paint. Simple huh? well, kinda Anyway some pics: Great rigging detail in here: An end glued in on each: Then the next: Touch ups needed urgently!!!: I also gave the prop a streaky coat of clear orange, looks quite vintage and authentic in my opinion Same with the other woody bits too. If my decals arent in the porch tomorrow morning, then I will be hodge-podge together some decals and make a camel similar to the Hendon one, with different serials. (Not exactly 100% accurate, but hey) Thats about it for now. Cheers Tim -
WOW!! That is one BIG nice Chinook! Great work Pete! Love the interior, the painting, oh just all of it! Cheers Tim

Thanks folks , Touched everything up and painted small bits, If you can see any imperfections that I may have missed, please point them out as I am tired and may have missed them! As I have just examined it, there are just a few touch ups that are needed, just a passover with a brush. I hope my decals arrive tomorrow, or the last few days will be rushed, as it has to be ready for sunday! I welcome all comments, and thanks for looking cheers Tim -

Cheers Murdo , I've started on the more detail work that I am brushpainting. After I've painted all the bits and bobs I will be touching up all the green and cream bits my shaky hand has defaced! My work area: Some severe touch ups needed: Struts base coat of light brown: Started on the wheels: The wooden effect was achieved by a stiff brush, dark brown oil paint and a glossy light brown base (thanks Deanflyer ): The oil paint looks like it is caked on in the photos, but is much more subtle in real life, honestly!: (It was a pain to get a decent photo!) Trying to decide on what paint to use for the aluminium: Hu 27001, 56 and 11 respectively. First coat of 27001, needs to be sanded in bits and reapplied: Thanks for looking Cheers Tim -

Just sprayed the green!! Went on well, only a few touch ups are needed. I'm very impressed with Tamiyas tape, last time I masked I used very tacky industrial masking tape, that took a bit of paint off and left residue on! However Tamiyas tape is pretty much perfection!! Anyway, onto the pics Will paint the aluminium and struts etc tomorrow cheers Tim -
I love it! Cant wait to see it in all its glory! Cheers Tim

Thats lookin amazing mate! Can't wait to see the finished result, Nice scratchbuilding as well, its addictive! Cheers Tim

Cheers Andy- they've gone fine, just got Stats left now , Anyway, it's now been primed with Humbrol 64, and looks far more uniform. Been reaquinting myself with my cheap single action airbrush, and I will be purchasing a decent double action in the future, as well as a small compressor, rather than one that takes up half the room Just waiting on the decals to arrive in the post- hopefully tomorrow Then I'll be deciding the final scheme, possibly one with the wood painted over Cheers Tim
